BTW, this is from the perspective of everday commuting... so no skintight jerseys or anything.
I made a gaiter out of an old pair of sweat pants... the kind that have the elastic around the ankle...
I cut off one of the legs and I put that over my right pant leg and tie the top around the top of my calf...
problem solved!

I never had any luck putting the bottom of my pants into my socks or tying the lower part of my pants...

When I'm not wearing shorts I'm wearing flappy chino-y things that I just roll up to midcalf-ish.

Depends on conditions. If it's over 60*F, I wear shorts (either bike or baggy, whatever). Down to about 45*F I wear running tights ($8 at Target). Below that I wear lined running pants. If I'm running just a mile or so to grab a sub or something I just clip up my jeans.

Use a velcro or metal clip to bind your pants so it doesn't touch the chainring. If it's touching the chain ring there's a chance it'll catch in it. I have a couple pair of jeans with tears in the right cuff.

I ride in cycling clothing and change into work clothes at work, after making use of my employer provided shower. If you can't change at work, maybe a chain guard, and/or a legband to hold your pants?

edit:I see these options have already been brought up.

Work is casual, so I commute in shorts (not knicks). Otherwise, I roll the right leg up - much better than clipping/tucking. No matter what, you can always accidentally brush the chainrings with your leg.

I wear bib shorts in warm weather, with tights over them when it's cold. Why not wear cycling clothes?

In college I used to use various clips and bands around my ankles to keep pants legs from getting greasy. Just about any bike shop should have them. You can bike ones with reflectors or not.

Why are you greasing your pant legs. That's just weird.

So the chain will just slide right off the pants. Duh!

I would feel silly wearing all that tight clothing for my fairly short commute, I might consider some more technical gear for longer rides. I just don't think you need to splurge on special tights for commuting to work, regular clothing works fine.
I can fight crime in my jeans just fine.

Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

Reflective ankle bands. I try to remember to wear black pants on bike commuting days.

Bikes: I just ride them, they own me.

I wear my wife's pants...when she lets me

Seriously, I commute in gear and change at work. I am lucky that I have facilities to change, the boss is very pro-cycling

Since I cycle almost year round in New England, I find anything over freezing (or so) in the Spring to be shorts weather. In the Fall and Winter, the tights go on probably on the south side of 50 degrees.

Cycling clothes are more comfortable, riding in street clothes tends to beat them up, especially a suit.

I wear those cheap costco cargo pants that convert to shorts. The pockets are really handy for carrying stuff (sorry to state the obvious). In the mornings when I'm long panting it I do the sock tuck. I have to warn you though, it's not for everyone. The sock really makes the women swoon so it can create a hazardous situation as they lust for you.

Ken, I think you've just solved a big mystery for me. I've noticed a tendency over the winter for my jeans to fray at the bottom of the leg. Now that I think about, I bet it's the biking that I do around town.

This tuck technique is also very good for keeping ticks away while you walk through the woods.
I agree a very sexy thing.

My commuter (the Schwinn) is an upright with a full chain cover. In the winter I wear work clothes (slacks) in the summer I wear shorts (for the heat). If I'm riding something else (my other bikes do not have chain covers) I either use a velcro strap or wear shorts.

For knocking around running errands and whatnot, I just wear jeans (straight-leg) with reflective velcro straps (mine are from REI).

About a month ago, I picked up a pair of close-out shorts from REI-Outlet. I liked 'em so much I got another pair. The idea was that with the Spring rainy season going on, I might as well get something comfortable and that would dry quickly. This season has been quirky, though. Either near-summer like or unseasonably cool (until just recently). I found that I can ride pretty comfortably in shorts down into the 30sF. That's about the top end of my winter tights. I shower and change at work, so I think I'm settled for the foreseeable future (and so am now in the market for something ELSE to obsess about ).

Not on Mt. Everest due to a lack of roads, really bad terrain and lousy weather.

Oh, BTW, thanks for ressurecting a dead thread from 2008.
