The next question should be what time do we have to be in bed by in order to get up when we do.

9 pm to wake up at 4 am.

Old commute (bike-train-bike):
Alarm at 3:00am Out of bed at 3:30am Out the door at 4:00am, bike to station On the train at 4:43am Off the train at 5:40am Bike to work and clock in at 6:00am New commute (drive-train-bike): Alarm at 3:30am Out of bed at 3:50am Out the door at 4:20am, drive to station On the train at 4:43am Off the train at 5:40am Bike to work and clock in at 6:00am I did the bike-train-bike last year and i could only motivate myself to do it twice a week at the most. With the drive-train-bike commute i find it much easier to do it 4-5 times a week. The extra 30 minutes of sleep really helps and i'm waking up alot closer to the time i'd normally have to wake up if i drive to work (~4:30am). It's 4.5 miles from home to the station, but sometimes i really really don't feel like pedaling that early... |
Now that's an early commute. Like a paper route.
|
Up at 5:15, shower, quick cup of coffee and on the bike by 6. 25 miles to work, get there between 7 and 7:30, rest of the office comes in at 8:30.

A little over 14 miles each way. Downhill run on the way in, so I get up to a pretty good clip for a couple of miles. Mine is about 15 miles each way, rolling hills both ways. |
Iron shirt, pack the backpack the night before. Alarm goes off at 4:45. Brush teeth, shave, feed cat. 9 mile commute. Cool down (takes a while for me), shower at work. At desk 6:30-6:45. Get breakfast from the cafeteria, eat at my desk.
|
On MWF, I get up at 4:30-5:00 AM, eat a quick breakfast, check my tire pressure and hook up my trunk pack, and head out for a 2-3 hour road ride before I get to work. We have showers in our building, so I take a shower and get dressed after I get there. As long as I'm here during the middle-of-the-day, my office hours are flexible. I just need to make sure to put in my 45-50 hours per week, and all is well.
On Tuesday and Thursday I get up around 6, have breakfast, and commute 4 miles to work. I occasionally do 1 hour interval or hill rides on Thursday afternoons, if I have a window of opportunity. I always get in a good 3+ hour ride sometime during the weekend as well. |
Up at 7:45AM, out the door at 8AM, on the clock at 8:30AM. :) Return trip anywhere between 8PM and 1AM.
|
Up at 03:45PST... pack breakfast and lunch... feed the cats and stand guard to keep the neighborhood bully pets at bay... hit the road at 04:10PST. Get to work before 05:00PST to start my day. I live in Louisville. ;)
|
Man, y'all get to sleep late. ;)
Up at 3 a.m. on commuting days. I get to sleep in 'til 4 on days I drive in. |
Asleep by midnight, awake at 6:00. Out the door at 7:30. In the office by 8:15. On the other end, it's a 35-40 minute ride. Stopping at the coffee shop adds 5 minutes. Groceries adds 10 minutes to the riding time. Don't ask about the bar.
|
wake up at 3:50 eat breakfast and done at 4:05 at latest. Shower, get things ready go back to bed at 4:30 till 4:50 and get up and leave. I eat cereal, nothing that will overstuff you. you can get away with a banana and some other small thing like cottage cheese or yogurt and eat larger at work.
|
Wow, lots of early risers here. And I thought I was up early! Now I don't feel as sorry for myself :P
|

Out the Door by 6am. Catch the bus at 6:25 am Get to work at 7:25 am. Eat breakfast at work. |
Up at 0500
Out the door at 0530 Takes 35-45 minuets to work or school depending if I catch lights or trains.... Take a shower (at work, no such luck at school) Then have 30-45 minuets till my shift starts at work or two hours at school to sit, relax, drink coffee and study (not realy study, just have to say that... right?) :D |
Up at 5:20.
Eat and leave by 6:00. Arrive at work between 6:30 and 6:45 depending on the wind. |
I'm impressed with this forum. 1 they like bicycles 2 they can read 3 they get up early (mostly). I share a house with a couple of people that are extremely lazy, and it is really nice to get an impression of a different possibility. I start my commute at 5:30 am if it is a m-f shift, 6:30 if it is on a weekend. It's about 5 and a half miles and I have a really nice long downhill stretch on the way in and don't even work up a sweat, and I have made it in 14 minutes on my old 10 or 12 speed. Have breakfast at work and put on a full pot of coffee. (No one else is going to get any of that.)
I get my exercise on the way home when time isn't at all a problem, and it is just about the most perfect possible commute. |

Up at 0400, out by 0500 (okay, usually more like 0515), in the building by 0545 to change and clean up, and on air by 0600. It's my favorite time of day. |
I sometimes get to bed by 0400. ;)
|
Up at 4 am, eat my raisin bran, feed the cats, make my lunch, get cleaned up, catch the 5am weather report, out the door at 5 o'something, 30 minute ride to work, cool down, change, start work at 6am.
|
Shower, in bed around 10.
Up at 4:55, cook eggs, pack lunch, pack work clothes, find my bike clothes, listen to NPR for the weather and some current events, out the door at 6:30. Ride 15 miles, arrive at 7:30, change/cleanup, more food....ready to work at 8. The rest of my crew comes in between 8:30-8:45. |
In bed before 11:30--usually at 11 though, and am up at 6AM and out the door by 7 to get to work at 7:30 for my 8AM shift. I like to give myself the extra 1/2 hour by leaving at 7 in case of a flat or whatnot, plus the auto traffic is alot lighter too.
