How early do some of you commute?

How early do you leave your house to commute in the morning? Do you guys eat before you leave? How long is you commute and what time do you start?

I get up at 6am and try to leave the house around 630-640 in order to be at work to start at 7am. I sometimes eat breakfast depending if I allow myself enough time. I find it hard to get all of my things together and eat breakfast while still leaving myself enough time to make it to work. I hate to roll in, jump off my bike and get straight to work.

So anyone want to post there tips on what they do in the mornings?

Thanks :)

Alarm is off at 5:50 a.m. I snooze until about 6:15. I shower and stuff and am out of the house by 6:50-7:00 to make it into work for 7:30-7:45. I'm lucky that I can eat my homemade breakfast at my desk while I start up my work for the day. Oh yeah, it's cool enough in the morning and I take it easy so I don't have to worry about showering at work.

I usually get up around 6:30-7, walk the dog, hit the shower and make some eggs if I remember, maybe toast (only takes like 3 minutes to cook and no time to eat, plus great nutrition). I'm out the door 30 minutes after I wake up if I want. I usually have time to chill for a bit before I hit the road, though. If you don't have much time and don't wanna cook eggs or something, try making shakes pre commute or just get some meal replacement powder or something and down it before you take off if you need the energy. I'm not the type of guy who needs to eat before activity. I have completely forgotten to eat until dinner on days that I biked to work and lifted over lunch without noticing. On the other hand, I have a friend who will bonk at his desk if he doesn't have something to eat every 2 hours or so. It's just genetics, I guess. Good luck getting your schedule down.

Up at 5:30, shower, eat around 6:15 and out the door between 6:30-6:45. Get to work around 7:30. Quick shower. Eat again around 10am. Lunch at noon.
I get my stuff together the night before.

In contrast, when I driving, I get up at 6:30, shower, eat, leave the house about 7:45 and get to work at 8:15.

I get up at 5:35, shower and eat---everything is normally packed the night before (or close to being packed) I am on the road to school at 6:10---I only live four miles from where I teach so I am there by 6:30 or so...I ride slowly in the AM and enjoy the sunrise and such.

Eat first thing, then take a shower with anti-bacterial soap, so you won't stink (I use Dial AB). Have your stuff ready the night before (clothes, etc.), so you are not fudging around with that. Leave at daylight, so motorists see you. I used to like to ride in the dark, but dark is scary, and no witnesses to a hit-and-run. Motorists should see you, and know they will be seen by others, so they can't get away with road-rage in the dark.

I ride 10 miles each way; it takes 45 minutes. If I leave at 6am, I still get there 2 hours before most people show up. If I leave at 7am, I am still there by 8am.

Wear a reflective vest, stand out, be noticed.

5:30 Wake up
5:50 Get up & shower
6:00 Eat & read news & listen to NPR
6:25 Get dressed & ready to leave
6:40 Leave

Easy 5 mile ride, get to work, change clothes (no shower needed) go to desk

7:15 Drop off my panniers and helmet at desk and make run for coffee shop
7:30 Work officially begins.

P.S. I am a morning person anyway. And it only takes me 10 minutes longer to get to work by bike than it does by car, since I had to park 5 blocks from the building I work in. Now I lock my bike in the basement. So my morining routine has changed very little since I started riding my bike (about 3 weeks ago, actually).

Up at around 5, dressed and out the door around 6. Into work around 7 where I park the bike and head to the gym to shower. After showering and dressing, I'm back to work at a little before 8.

A little over 14 miles each way. Downhill run on the way in, so I get up to a pretty good clip for a couple of miles. Downtown traffic slows me down for the last few miles.

Typically I am up at 4 a.m. and I get dressed and then packed last minute items on the bike so that I'm an out of the house and rolling by 5 a.m. I usually make it to work by 6:20 to 6:30 a.m. where I shower and change into my corporate casual clothes.

climbhoser 05-05-08 10:39 PM

up at 5, out the door by 530. I've been trying to grab a snack, but I usually don't. My old job was later and I did. Now I ride by 530 for my 16.5 miler, at the gym by 630 for a shower and work at 7. I read that a bowl of cold cereal was as good for replenishing glycogen stores as a recovery drink, so I do cold cereal after I punch in, and slug some coffee. I graze all day and have a big dinner so I'm usually good to go!

SDBluefish 05-05-08 11:34 PM

Two possible schedules:

If I am not getting the kids to school then: 5:30 alarm, coffee, pack breakfast & lunch, out the door by 6:20. At work (14-15 miles) by 7:30.

If I am getting kids to school then: 6:00 alarm & coffee, 6:30 wake up kids. 6:31-7:30: Make-Breakfasts-Pack-Lunchboxes-Brush-Cowlick-Braid-Hair-Find-Shoes-and-Homework-Did-You-Brush-Your-Teeth-Wheres-That-Permission-Slip-Are-You-Wearing-THAT-Take-a-Sweater-Kiss-Kiss-Bye-Love-You-Learn-Stuff!

I'm out the door by 7:45, at work by 9.

Machka 05-05-08 11:48 PM

Once I start commuting again ...

I will have to leave home by no later than 5:50 am so I can arrive at work by about 7:40 am. That will give me 20 minutes to clean up and change before work. This means I will have to be up by about 5:15 am.

In order for me to do that, I will have to do two things:

1) I need to take a backpack full of stuff to my office, to leave in my office. I want to bring things like baby wipes (which I just bought today), other toiletries, food, shoes, a cardigan, etc. Having what I need there saves me the hassle of remembering to bring it with me.

2) I need to pack my Carradice with the things I want to take with me such as tools, extra layers, rain gear, etc.

I will put my change of clothes into my Carradice the night before, and also my water in my bottles the night before, so that in the morning all I'll have to do is to shower, dress in my cycling gear, grab my lunch and go.

I don't eat before my ride, but I will have breakfast once I've arrived.

That's what I've done in the past and it seemed to work fairly well. I'm just in the process of getting myself organized right now.

MIKEnDC 05-06-08 01:28 AM

I'm up a little after 4:00 AM (some days--like this morning--I'm already up and fiddling around on the 'net for a bit). This also gives me time for a pot of tea and a look at the weather (both TV and the real thing). I'm not usually hungry when I first get up.

Out the door between 5:00-5:15 (lately more like 5:00). My 5-mile trip only takes me 20 minutes give-or-take, so by 5:45 I've usually locked up the bike, walked around the building, and gone through the front door (opens up at 5:45).

Showered, changed, and at my desk ready to go by 6:30. Some mornings this includes cereal and yogurt/fruit at my desk--other mornings I'll go grab a veggie omelette in the cafeteria at 7:00.

On normal days I'm back out riding by 3:30 PM. :D

CommuterRun 05-06-08 02:41 AM

I get up at 4. Drink coffee and fiddle around on the 'net, primarily checking BF and the weather, for about 20-30 minutes. Then eat breakfast, typically bacon and eggs, and toast or rice. Followed by fixing my hair and getting dressed. I usually prep and pack the bike I'm going to use that day the night before. Then out the door around 5:10, no later than 5:20, to be at work ready to start at 6.

prawza 05-06-08 03:55 AM
