Maxxis Hookworm vs. Holy Roller

I've searched and couldn't find anybody comparing these two tires.
The hookworms seem to be faster on pavement but are a lot heavier. But then the Holy Rollers seem to have a better overall rating by people for a mixed bag of conditions (gravel, hard packed trails, pavement, etc).

I want easy rolling tires for around town mostly on pavement. Which one of the two tires would you people recommend, or is there another tire that would fit my riding even better? I'd like to keep the tires fat for some level of comfort...

Thanks for any tips or comments

What kind of frame are you wanting to stuff this rubber into? The 26inch version of the Holy Roller is 2.4, and Hookworms are 2.5's. I don't think vbrakes would have clearance on the Hworms. Not to mention will the frame have clearance.

The Holy Rollers are nice, Hookworms are for BMX-style riding (park type stuff). I would also check out Kenda K-Rads...similar to the holy roller with some tread, but usually had for far less money

I will be using an older GT Timberline frame, i think it's from early 90's. The fork has 2.75" clearance while the rear end has 2.5" clearance, so I guess the hookworm def would not fit.

I'm running 1.95" Specialized Crosstrails and really like them. Kinda heavy, but zero flats, good handling/ride,good in the snow, and reflective sidewalls. Their Hemispheres also look pretty good. I've ridden Conti Town & Country 1.9" in the past, and liked them until I picked up 5 flats. Lots of folks on here rave about Schwalbe Big Apples as well.

crosstrails or crossroads? I cant find crosstrails, only the latter. They seem to get good reviews on MTBR site

JiggyNS, are you looking for a slick "with some meat on it", or for something more slimming?

Lanman, Good suggestion on the K-rads.

I added tire liners to my Conti/Hemispere set up on my goof-off mtb commuter. They are starting to show their age/mileage. Since this is my "no hurry to get there" bike, I like for bigger tires. I have been looking at the Specialized Rythm (2.3) and Compound(2.2) tires. "IF" the reviews are true, they are smaller than advertised.

I just got the 26x 2.35 Scwhalbe Big Apples and love them. They fit under my fenders and roll easy.

SpiderMike, I'd like to have some comfort while still being able to cruise easier and not work my butt off while getting around. This is why I imagine larger (2 - 2.5") slick tires would fit my need better. Are the meatier tires a lot slower than the skinnier slicks? I'm not talking about super skinny road tires, but in the high 1" sizes.

cman, do the big apples have a white wall?

I've read that for the same tyre construction and pressure, wider tyres will roll easier because they have a shorter (lengthwise) contact patch with the ground (ie for the same pressure, the contact area remains the same, but on a narrower tyre this area must be longer and narrower and consequently deform the tyre more), and will also be more comfortable. This seems to make sense to me.

I'm running Maxxis M-Tread's, 2.10 in front and 1.85 in rear. They seem to roll pretty nice. I'm finding much more enjoyable to ride on than the narrow tyres I was riding previously (though it's also a different bike, so ymmv).

Ascend: are these strictly BMX tires? I can't seem to find them in 26" size. The tread pattern looks good tho!

I have 26" Hookworms on a Cannondale 50/50. The linear brake cables just barely clear the tires, but they do clear. The wheels have to be installed with the tires deflated.

yea, i dont think i can fit them on my GT frame.. unless i went with a smaller and different tire in the rear. The forks could handle them but the rear is too skinny.

You really notice the extra weight of larger tires when accelerating. It's a lot more than you would expect.
I use 26X1.5" on my non suspended bike for my 230 lbs. I can accelerate across intersections MUCH faster/easier.

Just checked maxxis.com and it looks like they're only in 20".

How is the comfort level on those tires?
