Now that I've built up some endurance, I'm sure I can handle it. I was driving about 7 miles to ride 18. Why not just ride 20 miles from my house?
I'll believe I'll be trying this route tomorrow.

I believe many of us here do this.
My prefered route is when I take a MUP that runs along the river Its actually a much nicer ride and safer than the route I take in winter.
taking the MUP option adds 6 miles to my ride, but Im on safe MUP for 13 out of 19 miles.

In my case it's about 3 km which isn't much. The 'traffic' route though is the only one I can use during winter. It's also much faster speed wise because the MUP alternative isn't in a great shape! I decide on the route depending on my mood and the time at which I leave :-)
