The driver was speeding away, but on the side access lane of K Street. He sped away only to get bottlenecked at the next light. Anyone who rides in DC city traffic knows how easy it is to catch up to a car with all the lights.

Anyway, liberal or conservative, seems a "failure to yield" ticket is pretty light for a hit and run. Then again, it's Washington DC. Justice and people's rights are the least of their worries.

regardless of status, wealth, or celebrity, i've seen so many similar cases where drivers had gotten off very light for things like this. so, although this is another example of a rich well connected dude getting off easy, i think it's just par for the course as far as hit-and-runs go.

Facts galore. However, he buys energy credits to make up for it all. He is also the one on the private jets to talk against driving anything other than a hybrid or electric to visit grandma on Christmas.

Anyways, this story is just more proof that Novak has one of the blackest hearts in DC.

A thought, this being post nine eleven and since it was D.C., I would expect K Street is CCTVed its entire length.

I don't think so. There aren't that many crime cameras around DC,at least nothing like London.

I'm wondering what was going on inside the cop car. He was sitting in there for an hour.

I think that's standard for ped/bike strikes via car......that's what my guy got charged with:. In VA, it's VA Code 46.2-820.

Technically, the guy could have (and should have) also been charged with violations of:

46.2-924 - Drivers to stop for Pedestrians
46.2-841 - Illegal passing on right

If he got convicted, that would be 10 points on his license (12 is an automatic suspension). As it is, I have to make sure he gets the 4 points (that stay on for 3 years). I think that "Failure to Yield ROW" is likely an easier charge to convict on in traffic court, so the police use that as a catch-all.

Anyway, back to the Novak incident. With all those witnesses, and it hitting the press (and Novak having deep pockets and a reason to make this go away quickly), the guy he hit is likely VERY popular with the PI lawyers right now.....(as he should be). Novak should have been charged with hit and run, too.

When I started this thread I thought it would be roaring in the "tabloidesque" media for weeks. Now it is hardly a local story. The new angle: The Fourth Estate Takes Care of It's Own.

Driver in Boise got a ticket for inattentive driving after running a red light and hitting a cyclist this morning. Cyclist went to the hospital.

I read Novak's book. He used to drink a lot on the job. Maybe he still does.

I'm sorry, but your "facts galore" amounts a link to a single Business Week column, written by a guy whose stated premise is to play "gotcha" with outspoken environmentalists? And the primary source in the column is something called the LBN -- which turns out to be a hack internet PR newswire?
Come on.
Although it is appropriate for this kind of ad hominem attack to crop up in a post about Robert Novak. If you can't attack the man's ideas, attack the man behind the ideas.

OP,please forgive me for my part in derailing this thread.
I think that Novak should,at the very least,
pay the person he hit a huge sum and never be issued a drivers permit again.
and the cyclist that stopped him is a hero

I was not attacking Al Gore,Just using him as an example.

Rich people paying for their carbon footprint (IMHO) is a way to clear their guilt.
Go ahead and have a 30,000.00 single family electric bill,
just don't lecture me about my WAAYYYY under 30,000.00 bill

and since I don't want to get banned for this not being in the politics forum, that's all I'll say here.
PM me if you need more proof

Novak will get away with it. Someone as destitute as Novak's victim can be paid off really cheap.

His drinking explains several Novak incidents. One example being his conversation with Karl Rove in regards to Plame. / It also explains his Sunday talk show mannerisms.

"Great people talk about ideas.
Average people talk about things.
Small people talk about other people."

he may have a big carbon footprint, true, but at least he has some constructive ideas. the net benefit from those ideas, if implemented by even a small percentage of the population, will more than make up for his electricity bill.

I don't want to derail the thread either. And jittery, you've been quite civil in our disagreement, and I appreciate that.
But there is simply NOT tons of proof of this.
You have provided just another link that comes from the same single source, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research (TCPR). The TCPR is a right-wing/libertarian-leaning "think tank" that has an ax to grind against environmentalists. This group has ties to the American Enterprise Institute, which has received more than $1 million from ExxonMobil. This group is trying to discredit Gore and using any means necessary. Their press release on the Gore's energy use is meant only to create confusion. They've given up on saying that global warming is a hoax, so they're attacking the messenger.
I'm weary of seeing these counterintuitive, specious right-wing memes solidify into "common knowledge." Believe me, I'd prefer if Gore's energy consumption was more along the lines of Ed Begley's, but it isn't. That he buys clean-energy credits to offset this is perfectly legitimate, but as an admirer of his, I would certainly prefer that his house ran on its own solar panels. Which, according to the story you linked to above, they are doing.

Thank you for indulging me. And yes, chalk one up for the bike commuter that races down the Dark One's Corvette.

In the past, you could avoid going to war if you sent someone in your place. Usually a less affluent, destitute person, possibly more than one. I find energy credits, carbon credits, whatever, to be the same type of thing.

Can I buy a hummer and drive it excessively, all while running my air conditioning down to 65 all summer, and my heat up to 85 all winter, if I can find some hut dwelling pygmies in a forest somewhere to sponsor me? After all, their simple lifestyle would offset my lifestyle, carbon wise, and the mirror, knife, and cigarette lighter I send them will enhance theirs. LOL

But a dislocated shoulder, OUCH! Speaking from personal experience, that hurts! Glad the pedestrian has a good outlook on life.

I agree in principle, but I don't think this is the same thing, quite. This isn't like Kyoto emission credits, which are finite and can be purchased only from those nations who don't use them. (The idea being to keep greenhouse emissions on a reducing schedule.) This is paying a solar-electricity company for the electricity you use. It's unlikely that the electrons flowing into the Gore's house are all solar, but he paid through the Green Power Switch program for his 221,000 kilowatt-hours, so $30,000 worth of solar/geothermal/green energy went into the Tennessee grid.

What the crap is an energy credit???

I've heard of carbon credits, and the like. Which I think are a total load of BS. (I've always wondered why the government and the media like to try and guilt trip me out of my money....)

P.S. My question above was totally sincere.
