A lot of this depends on what your calorie requirements are. Carbs are pretty easy, since most of the carbohydrates we consume are from plant sources anyhow. Any dense whole grain bread or cracker fits that bill (easily packable, full of carbs). As for "energy" most of the foods which provide short term energy depend on sugar to provide that boost, so you can make your own energy bars. Here's one recipe a two second web search turned up:

https://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-recip...nergy-bars.htm

If I wanted to turbocharge the above recipe for endurance sports I'd add a bit of sorghum molasses. From an overall health standpoint adding simple sugar isn't the best idea, but to get the effect for short bursts of energy it's effective, and won't kill you.

As for protein (that component which nutritionally illiterate people assume is the bane of a vegan or vegetarian diet) it's easy. Proteins are nothing but chains of amino acids. There are any number of complete proteins from plant sources. Beans/whole grain combos are complete. You can make it packable by doing bean spreads and putting them in whole wheat pita or other pocket breads. Lately
my favorite is the azuki spread I mentioned earlier. I'll post the recipe when I retrieve the book from my fiance's house. Tofu/tempeh dishes are good too. I like marinated tempeh, because it's dense, portable, and relatively dry (I don't have to worry about it leaking into my panniers).

Other fun things to pack are roasted brussels sprouts (roast them in olive oil at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes), popcorn, various kinds of nut butters (plenty of recipes out there, I could post some if you like),
and for the irredeemable junk food junkie Tings (the vegan version of the Cheez Doodle).

Aaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd...

I'm an omnivore.

You're welcome : )

In a related note, I find that eating a steak before a long ride is a poor idea. So I guess I am a vegan before a ride. I ate a bowl of cereal this morning for breakfast in fact that had only a little meat in it, so I don't know if that counts. Kellogg's Frosted Meaty Flakes, or something such as...

But no, I like lettuce. Zaxby's is really good too... and Popeye's... and Fuddruckers...

Anyone of you vegans discovered Quinoa yet? It's the only grain that forms a complete protein all by itself and packs a good fiber dose as well.
Wait, Quinoa? I thought that was an actress, not a protein filled grain...?

Wait! No!

Omg is my face red...

That's Wynona. Wynona Ryder. Who I think is a vegetarian!

Again, you're welcome : )

Animals are delicious. Convenient too. You can love one as a pet then eat it during those cash-strapped times.

Does an ovo-lacto who went vegan for Lent count? Too bad you didn't post this thread a couple of years ago.

Anyway, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Brendan Brazier or his vegan athlete nutritional supplement "Vega".

Oh, and 29 miles RT, though at the time I dabbled in veganism my commute was to grad school, maybe 7 miles RT.

Wow, if we're discussing MTBing, there would be pro/con debate. If we were discussing leg shaving or lycra wearing there would be open debate.

Since we're discussing the vegetarian fad, no discussion is allowed? Wow, you people are touchy.

As I mentioned before, I am not vegan, but I hope you don't mind if I chime in on this. My girlfriend is hypoglycemic, and we use Quinoa as a way to get her protein when she needs it.
Being a bit of a protein junky myself, i use it in place of the more traditional carbs like rice or orzo.

Actually something that I have started making for her is that I stir fry up chick peas in a bunch of middle eastern spices (Cumin, Zatar, schwarma, etc...) and toss them over a bed of quinoa. She likes it.

The car free forum would be a good place for questions as well. I think quite a few folks over there are vegans and, being car free or car lite, I'm sure they know some tips on staying fueled up and avoiding animals products in their equipment.

Vegetarianism is not a fad. One billion (give or take) Indians can't be wrong. This thread is about a vegan bike commuter roll call, though, not about whether to do or not to do something (e.g. leg shaving).

Vegan commuter here, also about 20 miles daily round trip.

I've been vegan for about 5 years now, vegetarian for almost 10. Still in great shape and competing in triathlons so I must be doing something right... =)
