I have never heard of anyone having a problem cycling anywhere in PA, NJ or NY aside from the very few that get huge media attention.

There is a women's forum, PM an admin for access.

I don't try and talk people into commuting by bike regardless of their reasons for choosing not to. If they are genuinely on the fence and have concerns that I can help with, I will certainly encourage them.

Getting mugged is a possibility in some areas later in the evening. It's relatively rare but does happen and to both sexes. I won't lie and tell people it doesn't happen but I will say that depending on where you are riding and what time, it's a good idea to be with somebody.

I ride through some bad neighborhoods and just put my head down and keep moving. Most people better be watching for me or I'll be gone before they can plan anything. Today a guy I was approaching waved and said "hey,..." I quickly give a friendly "hey" back, knowing more is coming but pretending I don't and not slowing down. Then just as I pass he gets out "let me ask you something". Ha! I couldn't quite hear that because now I'm gone.

Don't get involved but otherwise be a friendly and confident/unworried soul. Look like you have a destination and know exactly where you're going.
