Commuter Demographic - just curious

Every now and then (usually while slogging up what feels like a vertical hill during a torrential downpour) I wonder about my sanity and that fact that I think year-round commuting is a really great idea even though I'm pushing 40. Of course by the time I get to the top of the hill I've come to my senses and I know that if I have my way I'll still be commuting 20 years from now.

So I'm curious. What's the average demographic of people who have embraced bicycle commuting?

I'll start - I'm 39, female (which I kind of suspect puts me in the minority right there) and a year-round, all-weather commuter.

I'm 30, male, and I commute whenever there's no snow or serious ice on the ground.

24 Male
Started commuting last summer at about 3 days a week. Went down to about 8 days a month during winter. Hope to do it 4 days a week this winter (gray season).

kbblodorn 09-19-08 11:23 AM

36, male, started in April, hoping to ride through the winter when possible.

tekknoschtev 09-19-08 11:35 AM

22, male. Started this past May and I too hope to at least get a few days in each week even in the snow.

NotReady4Purple 09-19-08 11:37 AM

54, Female. I commute 3-4 days/week unless there is snow/ice - or subzero temps. Short commute, though (6 miles RT).

19 Male-I ride to school three days a week when I have classes. I plan on riding to work when I move into the city this winter.
I plan on sticking to the full commute over winter depending on the ice situation.

27, male, started this summer and looking to ride as much as possible year round. Still not sure about the ice and snow(don't get much snow in the Portland-Vancouver area).

Crast 09-19-08 11:39 AM

23, male. Knowing me, I'm gonna ride in the snow till my first fall or twisted ankle. Then I'll be riding my steel beater the 2mi to the bus stop and taking that to school, until the snow melts.

23, Male. Last year was my first commute year, Did split commuting, drive in, bike home, bike to work, drive home, rinse, repeat. Didn't commute in the winter at all.

This year, Full commute, never drive, hoping to keep going through winter.

Single? Cute? Low standards? :D

49, male (as male as a dead sex goddess can be), married, year-round, most-weather commuter (I avoid major storms and worse) and the Bike Forums Klassless Klown (so ignore my flirting...unless of course you meet the above criteria and are interested!). :D

Edit: Been commuting to school or work on a bike pretty much continuously since I was 13 years old.

39m
4 season commuter, LCF since July '07

harleyfrog 09-19-08 12:03 PM

39 male hope-to-be year-round commuter, although my current work schedule is so screwed up I haven't kept a consistent riding schedule yet, but I hope that will settle out soon.

ClintP 09-19-08 12:04 PM

27, male and I started this May. My commute is 5.5 miles one way. I don't ride in the rain and I hope to continue into the winter.

I am also a software developer and I need to find a decent sized pannier bag that will fit my laptop. When I took this job, I said I wanted the largest screen size availible sine they offered, but that doesn't help me now since I am having trouble finding a pannier large enough for it...

34, male, 20km (one way) commuter. I think i managed 8 or 9 months out of the year last year. I commute on rural highways and simply refuse to do so on the snow and ice, but i do commute in the winter when road conditions allow.

mjw16 09-19-08 12:07 PM

38 year old, Male, year 'round-that means: heat, rain, snow, you name it. Been that way for 6 years now and plan on keeping it up as long as I can.

amit_shah25 09-19-08 12:10 PM

32 Male, 32 Miles RT, dont ride in storms, haven't ridden in snow etc.

My wife, she doesn't hangout here, but

32 Female, 26 miles RT, doesn't ride in too crazy weathers.

Barabus 09-19-08 12:10 PM

41 yr male and have been commuting for 3 1/2 years. Mostly a 3.5 season commuter when in SoCal, but now it remains to be determined what the PNW will do to me. I like the cycling vibe in the PNW and get support at work to commute, but there is the issue with rain and cold. Probably be a 3 season commuter here. Ride 3 out of 5 days on average.

legato 09-19-08 12:17 PM

26 yr old female and I have commuted for a few years. I don't ride in ice or snow, but that rarely happens here and when it does usually everything's shut down anyway.

DataJunkie 09-19-08 12:17 PM

33 started 3 or 4 years ago. Most weather commuter. I ride three days a week due to my long commute and the fact that I work from home 2 days a week.
Also, I tend to work from home in conditions that I deem too dangerous to travel out in. At this point in time I fully intend to keep riding until I retire.

MonthOLDpickle 09-19-08 12:20 PM
