Let's understand something.

Cyclists who routinely run red lights and stop signs routinely endanger other people's lives and property -- that being the people who are driving cars in intersecting lanes, when they have to slam on their brakes, spill their coffee, get rear ended, generate a hatred for cyclists, and maybe watch their kid smash her face into the dashboard. Or who inadvertently run the cyclist over and get sued by a greedy attorney for not paying attention, or some such stupid legal twist of justice.

Until we cyclists learn that the behavior of one affects the many, we'll continue to be disrespected by many non-cyclists. Cyclists who claim they can ignore traffic signals and ensure nobody else is being affected are not only being silly, they're ruining it for the rest of us.

No offense, but this isn't rocket science.

I'm sure our resident stop-light-runner will get on here with all of his excuses and denials....

You're assuming that they are reckless. But one can blow a red light when there is ample space to do so. Still a mortal sin? Sigh.

Others may know more though.

Let me tell you who's really ruining it for the rest of "us".

All of those Lance-de-Tour wannabes wearing Spandex out there on the streets our our cities, and roads of our countryside, looking like clown sausages splashed with logos of all the Italian dish soap companies that will never sponsor them. They are creating an unfavorable stereotype that negatively affects the rest of "us".

Fat old men and unshapely women squeezed into Lycra for no other reason than they think they need special clothes to ride a bike at 10 miles per hour on Sunday morning, or heaven help us...to the work place.

THOSE folks should really consider how their choices and actions ruin it for the rest of us. If we want to be treated equally on the roads in the USofA, then we need to dress like normal people for starters. Not aliens from the planet Gross or it's satellite Ribaldry.

How about this idea...

You wear what you like, and I ride the way I like.

No thanks. How about we complain incessantly over every thread you post? That sounds more productive.
One wonders why you keep posting these threads when the outcome is always a flame fest? Trolling or a glutton for punishment? Not that this crap is punishing.

Or maybe the cyclist goes through the red without causing any undue angst to anyone because he/she went through when it was perfectly safe to do so, due to PRACTICE, SKILL AND BEING ABLE TO SEE. This either due to no cross traffic or they were so far away or already passed as to not be an issue. Why is it everyone ASSUMES red runners jump right in front of oncoming traffic causing your bizarre list of driver issues.

In the twenty odd year I've been doing it I think I've been honked at a handful of times, and that when I was learning my current Traffic Jammer™ Methodologies for Vehicular Interaction. I can't remember the last time I got honked at/braked/skidded/coffee spilled/accident causing/kid maiming.... I hope you get the point.

You might as well be holding a "The End is Coming" sign downtown somewhere.
I love the way this board carries on as if seeing a cyclist running a red triggers this murderous rage in motorists.
Yes if you throw yourself right in front of them... they will be pissed, heck I would to ..even on my bike.
For the most part... this is not the case, not even with messengers.

As well any parent that allowed their kid to be so badly restrained in their car as to mash the kids face against the dash because of hard braking.....
a: Should get a visit from Child Services
b: Not be driving in the first place because they are stupid.

Data...you go right on ahead with the spandex. It's good stuff, I wear it everyday. YES Joey EVEN TO WORK mwhahahahahaaa..a.ack *cough cough*

Isn't the whole point of bicycle commuting to relax, ride a little slower, escape the hustle-bustle road-rage crap? You really seem to have the "ME FIRST!" mentality of someone who should be driving a honda civic with ground effects and a sound system, or maybe a jacked-up pickup with heavily tinted windows. If you really want to be a "20+ mph commuter", maybe you shouldn't be on your bicycle. Sometimes in life, right or wrong, we cyclists just have to stop, bite our lips, and let the bigger guy pass.

People enjoy different things when riding a bike. If you enjoy riding a bit slower, that's great. But it's okay to ride differently than you too.

And 20 mph is really not that unreasonable.

Not my commute. Plus, my bike is my "car". Commuting for me at this moment is a utilitarian act of getting from home to work and back. No way to make my route enjoyable other than a healthy dose of controlled substances.

I just want to get there without being squeezed off the road, right hooked, or punched in the throat and robbed by some thug on foot. So speed is everything for much of my route. Stopping for any length of time and for any reason is not such a great idea. New Orleans is pretty close to a police state. You see cop cars all over my videos. Cops are everywhere here for a reason, and that reason sure ain't scofflaw cyclists.

A good friend once gave me a custom T-shirt. It had printed on it "Disturbing the Comfortable". She claims that I am the master doing that. I can't argue.

You are giving yourself a wee bit too much credit. However, I would say that your ego appears to be unsurpassed.

Mine says 'non-conformist'... given to me by my kids. The same kids I've taught to jaywalk and to never allow a light on a stick to tell them if they are safe or not.

My point was....we can't always be worried about every ramification of our actions all of the time. You gotta do what is practical in your situation.

Sorry 'bout the dig on overweight folks. It was more about appropriate dress for public viewing. Slim folk wearing full race kit to work make me grin just as wide.

I have many friends and relatives who battle with weight. My mom and sister to name a few. I know second hand how hard it is to deal with being overweight, especially if you are care to do something about it. At my age, just stripping off my 5 extra pounds takes me a month.

I applaud your efforts.

well i'll chime in here for the hell of it. i hate those trucks. and he was clearly in the wrong. if you were driving a bus instead of a bike and hit him, it would have been his fault. at the same time, after watching just a few of your videos, you swerving around cars on both the left and right, barely missing pedestrians, running lights, not stopping when it is clearly your place to do so, i have to say that you don't do much to endear me to you either.

Did you read what i said? I said i never saw him endanger people's lives, and that includes slamming brakes, getting rear ended etc. It's not that hard to SAFELY blow through a red light, uhm, like i don't know, look in both directions and go? I do it routinely and have never causes anyone to slam on their brakes.
