Best Product of the Year -- Commuters, weigh in

1 -- Planet Bike SuperFlash.
A lot of blink for the buck, really gets attention due to the flash, and lasts a long, long time on a set of batteries.

2 -- Fenix L2D flashlight.
Serious firepower in a small package, easy to mount to bar or helmet, standard batteries, decent run time on a charge of a couple of AAs, reasonable price compared to other headlight options.

Ok so your putting an AA light on the front and an AAA light on the back so you have to carry two sizes of spares. I'd swap one or the other to have them be the same.

Truly a 2008 product. Introduced in 2008, recalled in 2008. It seems some owners were twisting them and breaking their STI shifters, the company recalled them to prevent paying for broken shifters. I kept mine, I just won't crank on them and break my shifter.

Dinotte 400r tail light. Even though half the light of the previous model was more than enough, they made this one twice as bright.

+1 on the PBSF.

Also, Pearl Izume Attack socks. I wear them every day even as my regular socks. I love them.

Lets see:
The winner 2 years in a row: Pearl Izumi Vagabond II jacket. Works for 98% of weather.

Runner up: Gill marine rain pants. 2 winters on them and they still hold up to all sorts of nasty weather.

Also ran: my 8 year old mtb shoes which I still use daily (though the end is in sight)

+1 on the lights. As well.

As far as I am concerned it is the best gear I used in 2008. I don't care if it came from 1982.

then what you're effectively asking is, "what gear is awesome"

What is a good affordable rear light option that uses AA and performs as well or better than the Superflash? Or maybe a strong AAA light for the front?

Besides, a Superflash will run nearly forever on a set of batteries. The thought of bringing spares for it has never crossed my mind.

Best thing we bought all year long was Schwalbe Marathons for the tandem. We had about 5 flats in two weeks of commuting and aside from one real freak flat involving a screw going sideways through both sidewalls on the rear, they've been bulletproof.

you mean like '08 model year? We only have one item in the household of that vintage, but it is a winner, a breezer w/ dyno/led headlight + full chaincase.

Those V-muffs are pretty darn nifty, but I'm happier with my

They also keep my ears warm off the bike.

No, gear that is awesome could be something I used 4 years ago and no longer use. I am asking what gear was awesome this year. That could vary based on location, usage, and what stuff you owned in the past year making the Best of 2008 still relevant.

Bikes: Surly Cross-check & Moonlander, Pivot Mach 429, Ted Wojcik Sof-Trac, Ridley Orion. Santa Cruz Stigmata

I have exactly no gear from 2008, and I have just about everything. (exception: tubes, tires, brake pads and chain, none of which are new to the model year, all exact replacements of used up parts)

I had no need and nothing struck me as any better than what I already own.

Bikes: Upgraded Scott Sub 20 in silver; Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc 2006 in limited edition Army green; Dahon Curve D3 foldable in white; Dahon MU P24 in blue.

+1 on the Fenix L2D Premium Q5s.

And I also added a Fenix P2D Premium Q5 to my helmet. Love these lights to bits.
