Some pics from my ride in last thursday around 6:30am

I know that place. I used to run around there shooting really bad "art" films. Yunz got me missing Pittsburgh, except for cycling there this time of year.

Heres my daily commuter to work

OK, here’s my commuter. It is a Giant Cyprus comfort bike with Shimano Altus components.

For all those detail geeks (I say that with respect – I learn a lot from reading the posts from the detail geeks):

- Yes, that is an aero bar on a riser handlebar. Please say it quietly so that no one in the road forum hears. I got the idea from reading a post about “antler handlebars.” Although I almost never try and get in an aero position while commuting, I do use the aero bars to provide another comfortable hand positions (holding the large forearm pads). It also gives me added spots to attach a small bag and lights.

- Yes, that big metal plate on the back wheel doesn’t look right. My commute is 9 miles on Farm-to-Market roads in rural East Texas. I was having a problem breaking rear spokes (I’m 6-2 and go about 250). Fixing spokes and truing wheels isn’t in my skill set just yet, so I’d have to take the wheel to my LBS … but my LBS is an hour away and a broken spoke usually meant considerable down time. Then I started reading on the C&V forum how they mix and match components from different bikes. Well, I have an old Schwinn Continental that is virtually bomb proof. I thought, what the hell, and took the wheels off the Schwinn and put them on the Giant. Worked like a dream. I lost a few gears, but that hasn’t had much of an impact on my riding. An additional benefit is the Schwinn wheels are 27-inch compared to the 700 Giant wheels. I can get 27-inch tubes from Wal-Mart when needed. Don’t have to drive 2 hours to my LBS for a tube.

And TEX: I've often gone back to steel rims on my more abused bikes. One good thing to know though is that the 27's and the 700's can use the same tubes, just not the same tires.

Just finished. I built this fixie for winter commuting. I'm running a 42x16 with armadillo 700x23's to try and keep flats to a minimum. I just added the Bontrager Courier bars something different. I had risers but they never felt right on this bike. Love to hear your thoughts on the courier bars. They are extremely comfortable and very heads up for traffic.

Woo hoo! I got my new bike today.Kind of a combined Xmas / birthday thing.

A singlespeed Salsa casseroll. This is what I'll be pounding the pavements on through Sydney from next week. It's a lot of fun to ride. Just fun fun fun. Comfy enough to cruise, fast enough to sprint, beautiful enough to eat!!!

I'm still getting used to it, so I dunno if or what I want to change at this point. I definitely will be adding a kickstand (I know, so taboo, yet so practical). I just can't stand trying to load up the panniers without one (too hard to find places to lean on in the winter). I'm also probably going to need a better rack someday, but I'll run this one into the ground first. I added a bell to the left drop bar (can't see it in this pic), studded tires, switched out the pedals and added power grips, but otherwise it came as shown.

what is with the pad on the top tube? I've seen it on a lot of flat-bar fixed-gears.

yes! southside it is. right near the southwall and the tracks.

the pad on the top tube is just a top tube pad. alot of people use it for the looks, but i use it so when i lock up, to the post/pole etc. it doesnt scratch up my frame.
