Japanese Bicycles

A new craze in the City of Malabon, Metro Manila, Philippines. Restoration of Japanese commuter bicycles. They call them Mamachari or simply Jitensha. Below is an example of a "Mamachari". Made by Bridgestone known as Raku-Raku. This bicycle has a lowered frame and adjustable seat height for easy handling. Baby carrier can also be use as a regular utility basket. Nexus 3-Speed, Front Tentamushi hub, and stainless steel rims & carrier.

Thanks to all forthe nice comments.
Holiday, your Lotus is killer!
Sancycles, thanks for posting that- I`ve never seen anything like it. Being a fan of Japanese bikes already (though a particularly rabid fan), it gives me a new line to research.

The chainrings, headset, bb and rear derailer were shot, so I had the headset rebuilt at Bike World and replaced the other shot parts. Here is the list of replacement stuff:

Wheels: Rhynolite rims, White Industries hubs from Craigslist (new rims, spokes, rebuilt hubs)
Tires: 2.35 Schwalbe Big Apple from JensonUSA
Stem: Nitto Technomic quill from Rivendell
Bars: NItto Albatross aluminum 54cm from Rivendell
Grips: Rivendell cork from Portugal
Levers: Tektro mt bike brake levers from Rivendell
Tape: Japanese cloth from Rivendell
Shifters: Bar end Silver friction shifters from Rivendell
Chainrings: Sugino 46/34/24 from JensonUSA
Seat: Brooks B-68 off Ebay Flybike
Rear Der: Shimano XT long cage from Bike World
Rear Rack: Bontrager from Bike World

I just ordered the MKS Grip King (Lambda) pedals, a NItto Mini Front Rack, and Wald basket, all from Rivendell.

This bike rides extremely well, and I am having a lot of fun with it. The tires are just wonderful. Check out this website: http://www.schwalbetires.com/balloon_bikes

:thumb: I really like your bike! I have been looking on Craigslist for a similar frame/bike that I wanted to build very similar to what you have done. Now I just have to find one and go for it!

Ask your local police department if they hold auctions. In this part of the country, they hold them once a year. There are a lot of impounded and abandoned bicycles. The original owners rarely come to claim them. Most auction bikes are junk. Of those that are not junk, half of them are in terrible shape. If you have a keen eye, you can get a nice bike worth fixing. If you are very lucky, you'll get a bike that doesn't need much or any work to get it working.

The prices you can get are amazing. I think the most I've paid for a bike at an auction is $50. And I've gotten some bikes that retailed for several hundred dollars.

At the last auction, last summer, they moved it from a Saturday morning to a Wednesday morning. There was no one there to bid against me. The officer told me to show him what I wanted and make an offer. I picked out SIX bikes and gave him $100. I think retail value of the collection was $1000 or $2000. I love the fact that cops don't know anything about bikes!

That's a great idea. I will have to give them a call and see what they say. Thanks!

Besides the previous mods of rack, lights, saddle bag, pannier, etc., there were several new mods done to it since I last rode it to work. In December I found out the cranks on the bike were recalled by Shimano. I waited until my LBS could get Shimano certified so they could do the work. I just got it back from them Saturday. Anyway, the new mods are:

. Shimano replacement cranks
. Planet Bike Freddy Fenders
. Origin8 Space Bar
. Instead of grips I have the world's shortest handlebar tape job
. And a Trek bike computer I got for free from a friend

My new commuter/MTB.
2009 C'dale F3. Switched out the tires to Maxxis Holy Rollers.
Added some old titec micro bar ends.
Rack is the Topeak childseat disc rack. The new MTX compatible version.

I'm liking it. Still debating on which trunk to buy. Most of all, can't wait to ride the 27 miles each way to the nearest trails.

It is a new model for 09.Sport 105, Stock, except I have changed to a zero degree offset seat post so the "crank forward" is where I prefer, not too extreme. A Brooks Flyer Special and a removable basket and lights. I'm real happy with it.

Silverexpress 03-21-09 08:39 AM

Sharp looking bike, dave.

crawdaddio 03-21-09 03:47 PM

I JUST got this rack/bike holster gizmo and I love it. Really light and compact AND strong. Can hold 100 lbs. Works pretty well as a work stand too if you position the 'arms' right and strap the bike in via adjustable clamp. It's called 'the michelangelo' by 'the art of storage', in case you're interested. So, I had to snap some photos......

Top is my GF's bike, then the trucker, on the right is my speedy bike.

Thanks Jconnwsu! I really like this bike. It is silky smooth and a lot of fun. those big fat tires are nice at night.

Hey, Crawdaddio- it isn`t a huge stable, but it looks like a great stash of bikes you`ve got there. What`s your girlfriend`s bike?

RayB 03-22-09 02:44 AM

Just finished converting my 520 over to an internal Alfine hub. Keeping the tripple ring on the front and using a JTek barend shifter for the hub everything seems to work great together. Various other things have been added on but my Nitto rack, B&M dynamo light and honjo Fenders are all not in yet :( .

But I am fairly happy with the way things have worked out thus far.

That looks badass...

You need to put on a front fender... it will save you and your drivetrain and make everything look right.

HumBum 03-22-09 10:41 PM

I do have a front fender for it, just had not put it on yet when I took the photos :)

BarracksSi 03-22-09 11:20 PM

That CAAD3 is, as they say, Boss. Damn, dude.

That bike is far out! I'll tell you why:

1. Cannondale
2. 1x8/9 setup
3. fat tires

I don't think those tires would fit on my 'cross bike. But I do want to put the biggest that would fit. Damn you must have some long legs. :D
