I really like that Silhouette! I've got the red version of those bags for my commuter (previous page) and I'll never go back to a backpack again. Lower center of gravity and better visibility over my shoulder trump sweaty back for me, and that's reason alone to switch to panniers here in Texas. I'm also rather enamored with those air horns. A friend of mine has one and I'm thinking of adding a second bottle cage so I can carry one too. Very handy.

This is my main commute bike, although since it doesn't have the clearances for fenders I wouldn't recommend it for that purpose. It's a Raleigh Supercourse (not the vintage line called Supercourse, but a newer line). It fits me really well, and I love riding it, but I'm working on converting an 80s Peugeot Iseran into an all-weather commute bike (I'll post a photo of that bike later).

Thanks  . Those panniers are monsters size-wise. I can fit 2 grocery bag's worth in each one and routinely take the bike shopping now. My messenger bag has been gathering dust ever since I got 'em. They do, along with the rack, add quite a bit of weight, but I can still find myself churning at more then a decent pace. They also feel stable and give a look of purpose which seems to resonate somewhat with cars on the road.

Also, I've lost count of how many times that Air Zound turned what could've been really bad situation to my favor. Drivers hear it and STOP and look. It has saved me from some really close calls. Never mind the occasional pedestrian on the Brooklyn Bridge that won't respond to the nice bell. :p

Here are my 3.
The huffy is what I started out on. It is now the bike I ride around while my 3 year old son is riding his bike.
The frame is too small for me and quite frankly it is a POS.

The Tarmac is my favorite bike to ride to work on. The rider is almost not worthy of the bike. :p
I upgraded the wheels and tires. Everything else is stock.

The Randonee is my all around commuter. Good for hauling stuff in and from work.
This one has the wheels that came with the Tarmac. The tires suck. I plan on picking up a pair of michelin pro race 2 red tires for the Tarmac and putting the Gatorskins that are on the Tarmac on this wheelset.

Edit: camera is sucking. The picts are a tad blurry.

Pretty new to commuting, and I must say I love it. I have been commuting by bike for about 2-3 months, I think it's about 8-9 miles each way (haven't figured it out yet). Well here's the bike, it's a 1965 Schwinn Varsity that I picked up for free. The only thing I have done is new tires, tubes, brake pads, brake cables, seat, and bar tape. It did come with fenders, but I took them off (only rains here like 2 days a year  Shifts great and pretty comfortable. Happy commuting.

Replaced Stolen Commuter...Again!

Damn it! My commuter bikes keep getting stolen! Here is my 3rd commuter. I've replaced two single speeds now and I think I'll just leave this one stock. Picked it up off of craigslist for a song and dance. Needed to be cleaned, new tires and seat but other than that I've been pedaling away.

Was going to be my winter commuter but it is now my full time commuting bike... until it gets stolen.

Cheers!

Having the chain on the large front chain ring and the large back cog stretches the chain too far to the side. When people talk about "clean chain lines" they mean keeping the chain relatively straight. It makes it run more efficiently, and also makes the chain less likely to snap while riding (not fun).

Oh, yeah, usually it's on the middle cog in the rear, but when I took the pic, it was about an hour after I got it home, and it was still like that.

Tnx;
I was 2 lazy 2 move the car :) and the light was not good enough when I took it from the front.
Actually my wife is using my car now daily as I take the bike each day.
But when the weather is really nice I take my Trek 5200 to my work.

Mmmmm... Euro Accord Wagon. Care to send one to me? For when I bother driving, that is.

Jeffbeerman2 07-10-07 09:06 PM

Mind sharing info on those baskets? Those are pretty nice (cool bike too). Where, what, how much?

I think those are Wald folding baskets. Less than $30 for the pair at the Stanford University bike shop. I never saw them before I got a job here on campus, and everyone has them here.

austinrd - holy CRAP that looks like a LONG seatpost/tall ride :D

Here are updated pics of my Centurion LeMans... and the goof who gets on the thing:

The extra (brighter green) bungees are bungee'd to the bottom clip and bungee of the bag to avoid what happened on Wednesday night (yeah, I'm paranoid, but I also want to ride this rig on a long trip this weekend, so I want to make sure my rear wheel isn't b0rk again :D)

The goof (me!):

Bad angles, but it's all I could muster getting home this afternoon.

austinrd 07-13-07 03:53 PM

yeah with the 26 in wheels it makes it loook that way but the top tube is actually 60 cm. just really short seat tube

I commute almost 40 miles a day on this old trek. She handles Chicago's broken glass, potholes, and stoplights well while still offering a fast ride.
