It has warmed up to freezing which won't make for a bad day of riding and the forecast next week is for some double digit weather... we can hope that winter finally relents. |

Très cool. How do you like the shaft drive, and what's it mated to (I'm assuming IGH)?
The shaft is mated to a Shimano Nexus SG-8R31 8spd IGH with a modified cesure.de hub brake rotor adapter, 140mm rotor and a modified a caliper mount (Avid BB7s for binders). I like the shaft for its easy maintenance and near silent operation not to mention it's a great conversation starter. I dislike the shaft for its extremely limited gearwheel ratio. There's no swapping out gear cogs like one can with chain rings thus the final gear ratios feel a bit off compared to my Alfine equipped Dahon. Add in the Michelin Trackers and any riding with less than 80 psi in the tires is like slogging through mud. All in all it's more than fine for my commute, about 5kms each way, especially with the constant rain here in our special part of the Wet Coast. |
The giant has taken over as primary commuter while the kuwie gets a face lift. I put the "new" saddle on it and an running some slicks now.

I'd also like to know about those fork adapters.

I retired the rack and the old Topeak trunk bag and panniers. Replaced with this Carradice Nelson Longflap with Bagman carrier. Now maybe I can quit spending money on bike stuff for awhile. |

Looks great, how do you like it? How far is your commute? The red is a nice touch on that bike.
|
So far it's great. It being my first one, I don't have anything to compare it to so maybe ignorance is bliss? No, but really, I've enjoyed it every time I've ridden it and yes, the red is an attractive addition. I did have to change the saddle to one that was women's specific after the first week of riding and am thinking of changing to narrower tires. I love the rack with the quick track system from Topeak - super convenient! My commute is between 7-8.5 miles each way (depending on the route I take).

Thought I would post a few pics of my 2011 Salsa Vaya build. You see a lot of the new orange bikes, but not so many of the charcoal. I'd like to say I put a lot of thought into the build, but it was really just parts I already had for the most part. 105 triple crank/brifters, Ultegra derailleurs, Brooks saddle, Cygolight Trident Extra light, Sun Ringle Equalizer wheels, Planet Bike fenders, Avid7 disks, Michelin City 700X32 tires...(yeah, I know the chain is too short. It's all I had in the garage and I wanted to take it for a test ride!)

Running a SRAM S7 IGH with coaster brake Now that it's spring, it feels great having the Nokian W106s off in favor of high pressure slicks |

It gets me over the bridge to and from work rather nicely. That's about all I usually ask of it. I did ride the NY Century with it last fall, though. It didn't complain. 2010 Jamis Citizen 1 with Velo Orange fenders & pinhead locking skewers. |
My budget commuter! :D

I'll be commuting on this as I prepare for a Colo/Utah bikepacking trip in May.
