My new build started life as an original 1992 Schwinn Crosscut. The only things still original are the frameset, derailleurs and cranks. Really happy with it. |

Hello everyone,
Here's my budget commuter (newbie here; wanted to try out commuting first before sinking hard cash on a descent bike): http://www.specialbikes.gr/eshop/ima...?productid=267 German engineering, Romanian built, costs 185 euros ($260 US) and so far has coped with my 310lbs without having anything fly off! lol |
@ ryanwood: to be fair, I added the rack, and replaced the saddle, pedals and brake levers with ones I already had. The original parts were fine, just not my taste. I paid $220 for it (asking price was $240), there wasn't much to complain about, it was in ready-to-ride condition. Bearings are good, no trouble with shifting or braking, and wheels are true and not dinged. I replaced the chain, cables, bar tape and tires. The ride is great - I have a 33-mile round-trip commute that I've started, 2x per week with goal to do 3x minimum. I was looking for a classic touring frame, this Schwinn completely met my expectations - smooth ride, nice handling even with a load on the rack. As a bonus, the bike is reasonably light - spec'ed as 24 lbs., but a little heavier with some of the mods.

I can't get over how classy this bike looks. Excellent build! What bars are those? Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or is the rear wheel larger than the front? I'd love to see a side profile shot.

Thanks! The bars are Salsa Woodchipper bars but with the barcons on there, there is less than 1in total clearance between either side and its a real pain to get in and out of doors. Thinking I might end up going with standard road drops simply because of that issue. Your eyes are playing tricks on you, they're both 700c Mavic A719 wheels laced three cross to Shimano 36H hubs. I have Panaracer Pasela TG tires mounted F&R as well. They aren't the best handling tires I've ever ridden but they ride well and seem to be pretty puncture resistant. I've got a side profile shot at home I'll post this evening.
Thanks. It is leather. Its the same Brooks honey color as the saddle. The saddle is used and the bar tape is new. I've treated it with Brooks proofride but I suspect it is going to need to be subjected to significant use before it becomes the same color as the saddle. Decided to splurge on the bar tape and don't regret it a bit. Tell my about the panaracers and why you feel that they lack in the handling department. Are you comparing them to race tires or other touring tires? What size are you running? BTW, that is a beautifull bike! |
Those nice old hybrids turned into touring/commuters are so sweet.

http://www.klickfix.com/images/php/i...=500&bg=ffffff I prefer the Vario Rack , so I can use pretty much any backpack I want. I have one and love it (no sweaty back) http://www.klickfix.com/images/produ...um/1912s_3.jpg |

Are those mountansmith bags? Can you give me the dimensions of either the bags or the inside of the cage? I'm assuming the cage is foldable?
wald folders measure on here, and they are now selling basket liners. http://waldsports.com/index.cfm/3558...sketLiner.html I would like to point out that most grocery stores selling reusable grocery bags are already selling wald basket liners for $0.99, but I am cheap that way. |
