My new build started life as an original 1992 Schwinn Crosscut. The only things still original are the frameset, derailleurs and cranks. Really happy with it.

Hello everyone,

Here's my budget commuter (newbie here; wanted to try out commuting first before sinking hard cash on a descent bike):

http://www.specialbikes.gr/eshop/ima...?productid=267

German engineering, Romanian built, costs 185 euros ($260 US) and so far has coped with my 310lbs without having anything fly off! lol

Looks like a fine scoot to me.

rsacilotto 07-25-11 08:36 PM

@ ryanwood: to be fair, I added the rack, and replaced the saddle, pedals and brake levers with ones I already had. The original parts were fine, just not my taste. I paid $220 for it (asking price was $240), there wasn't much to complain about, it was in ready-to-ride condition. Bearings are good, no trouble with shifting or braking, and wheels are true and not dinged. I replaced the chain, cables, bar tape and tires. The ride is great - I have a 33-mile round-trip commute that I've started, 2x per week with goal to do 3x minimum. I was looking for a classic touring frame, this Schwinn completely met my expectations - smooth ride, nice handling even with a load on the rack. As a bonus, the bike is reasonably light - spec'ed as 24 lbs., but a little heavier with some of the mods.

Beautiful! Is that leather wrap on the bars? Looks quite nice!

I have the same color 88 Voyageur and it is a great riding bike. I have 2 years commuting on it and will be selling it now that I no longer commute (retired) and have too many bikes.... Really nice ride!!

Thanks! The bars are Salsa Woodchipper bars but with the barcons on there, there is less than 1in total clearance between either side and its a real pain to get in and out of doors. Thinking I might end up going with standard road drops simply because of that issue. Your eyes are playing tricks on you, they're both 700c Mavic A719 wheels laced three cross to Shimano 36H hubs. I have Panaracer Pasela TG tires mounted F&R as well. They aren't the best handling tires I've ever ridden but they ride well and seem to be pretty puncture resistant. I've got a side profile shot at home I'll post this evening.

Thanks. It is leather. Its the same Brooks honey color as the saddle. The saddle is used and the bar tape is new. I've treated it with Brooks proofride but I suspect it is going to need to be subjected to significant use before it becomes the same color as the saddle. Decided to splurge on the bar tape and don't regret it a bit.

My craiglist Schwinn is a '81 Le Tour. It was in fair condition, and the price was right because I had enough spare parts around the garage to make it work. My biggest regret is the paint job. I have the frame nicely speced out (lighter than my cross-check) but the paint is scratched in quite a few places and I am starting to see some surface rust popping up here and there. I have been contemplating tearing it down and getting it painted, but have been putting it off and just commuting on my Surly which is now doing double duty as a tourer and commuter.

Tell my about the panaracers and why you feel that they lack in the handling department. Are you comparing them to race tires or other touring tires? What size are you running? BTW, that is a beautifull bike!

Those nice old hybrids turned into touring/commuters are so sweet.

Cool bike, those brake levers are wild. I like the Bluemels fenders on there too.

Are those mountansmith bags? Can you give me the dimensions of either the bags or the inside of the cage? I'm assuming the cage is foldable?

The comment about the handling was based on my experience with Continental Gatorskins and GP4000S. This is my first bike of this type and I'm running 700x35c and have no complaints with them. Bigger tires just don't handle quite as nicely as the 700x25c I run on my road bike. But they are WAY more comfortable and I like the Pasela TGs for other reasons (shock absorbsion, tread, gumwalls). Thanks for the compliment BTW!

I prefer the Vario Rack , so I can use pretty much any backpack I want. I have one and love it (no sweaty back)

ozark is the orange bag, the trunk rack is seattle sports waterproof.

wald folders measure on here, and they are now selling basket liners.

http://waldsports.com/index.cfm/3558...sketLiner.html

I would like to point out that most grocery stores selling reusable grocery bags are already selling wald basket liners for $0.99, but I am cheap that way.
