I thought they'd switched the Safari to discs... wow.
|
Wow, that's beautiful! What year is that? Is that black leather bar tape?

Haven't done any actual commuting on it but I'm sure it'll be a painful learning experience.

W plus 1 for the wet slush and snow... added the fenders and swapped the thumbies for some LX STI's this evening. Things had warmed a little by the time I was on my way back and things were wet and slushy and those fenders were most appreciated.
Bike is late 80's BRC Ricochet hybrid in pretty much new shape... warrants a better picture now. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=349748 |

Planet Bike is the bomb! I've had nothing but good products from them, with great prices and service. I've got 2 PB Superflashes, 3 sets of Cascadia fenders, the KOKO rack and probably other items I am forgetting. They also sell a lot of useful small parts, like tail-light mounts that fit rear racks perfectly.

After 21 years have retried my Trek 700, here is the new commuter rig. It will also do double duty for some light dirt/gravel and touring rides:

LOVE IT!!! That with a rack is pretty much my dream commuter bike! :thumb:

Thanks. Need to pick out a rear rack (already have a new pannier/backpack). In the meantime have an older bike-backpack that will do.

Thanks, It's a 2013 the bar tape is cheap pleather type material. IIRC the Safari's were rigged with disc brakes for a year or two. My girlfriend picked one up, two years ago now (?) and it came as you described; disc hubs, tabs for disc cable routing, but equipped with V's. |

Thanks, It's a 2013 the bar tape is cheap pleather type material. IIRC the Safari's were rigged with disc brakes for a year or two, but have since come equipped with V-brakes. I've seen at least one locked up on the street with discs that looked like they came from the factory that way (everything else was bone stock). A look at Bikepedia might clear this up. My girlfriend picked a new one up, two years ago now (?) and it came as you described; disc hubs, tabs for disc cable routing, disc compatible rear rack, but equipped with V's. Also in an awful poop brown color, came with grip shifters, and weighs more than my old low end GT's. Who chooses to sell bikes in poop color? We're stuck with it for now as it's sunk cost, put it's just a placeholder for a better touring bike someday. She hates it, it's heavy and she doesn't like the way it handles at all. Luckily, I built up a repurposed old MTB for her that she adores, so she does get out riding. If all she had were the Safari, I don't think she'd hardly ever ride. Given the positive response yours got, I should post a pic of hers. She commuted on it a few times, and I've got it outfitted with really nice Woody's fenders, Tanaka copper water bottle cages and a few other accents trying to compliment/distract from the poop brown color of the frame! ;) |

I usually just wear a backpack if I need to transport food. Add-ons aren't my thing. |

This is my "new" commuter, a 1991 team specialized stumpjumper which is pretty much complete (I need to pick up some fenders for it, though):
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=350646http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=350647 I'm really enjoying the bike. My other "new" commuter is a 1991 bridgestone XO-2; I tend to ride it when the weather is better: http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=350648http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=350649 |
