What's with handlebar mitts? My hands do just fine with normal winter gloves down to -10 or so, and beyond that I'd just layer a thin under armor running glove under my heavy winter gloves.

Anyways here's my bike how I rode it for today's commute. Skipped the gym today so ditched my rear rack for the seatpost bag. Felt a little faster going up the mild hills on my commute, was nice.

Circulation must be different for different people. Below freezing, I have ski gloves and wool liners and I still lose my fingertips after a little while.

I always felt like mine was bad in my hands and feet, and chalked it up to being well over 6' tall. Reading some of the threads in winter cycling and commuting has made me realize maybe others have it even worse than me. I do fine wearing the light and minimal Merrell Trail Glove 2 and dollar store socks down to the 5-10 degree range, which is about where I think about doubling up on socks. I see others that wear thicker shoes with wool socks and still strap on shoe covers if its below freezing.

Just hard to imagine needing something that big and bulky for my hands I guess. I haven't had a single day yet where I've wanted to layer my thin under armor winter running gloves I jog in with my large, thick camping gloves I use for cold evening commutes. One solid pair of insulated wind / water proof gloves is all I need.

leegf, that's a beautiful picture! And given how often I am disappointed with sunset photos I take, I can only imagine how fantastic it looked in real life!

My new commuter. 2015 Trek 7.5 FX. Rack, fenders, Wolftooth single ring, Time ATAC 8 Carbon pedals, Barfly mount. Sweetness.

That's a pretty good picture for a cellphone. Nothing to be ashamed about there.

I don't think I've ever seen bar ends on in reverse before. Did you try them the normal forward direction and not like 'em that way?

They are throw away old bar ends cut down to about 2.5 inches and mounted inwards with the screw head on the underside, wrapped with bar tape. They make for a very comfortable cruising hand position and then when climbing or accelerating out of the saddle they are really solid to grab hold of and get leverage on the crank. I would have drop bars if they weren't so uncomfortable for my middle aged body.

When standing out of the saddle most people tend to lean forward to keep their weight centered, so the typical forward mounting of bar ends feels very natural. Same thing with grabbing the horns of bullhorn bars. I'm having a real hard time imagining how that could be comfortable. Have you tried them in the usual forward position and didn't like it?

lesterp66 02-27-15 09:18 AM

Very similar to bar ends like these in both form and function but homemade. Believe it or not they work great.

This is a smaller set. For me the hand position is the most comfortable long term since weight is on the heel of the hand.

This is the thing I have been commuting on this winter, It is not perfect but gets the job done. Next thing to add to it are the fenders, maybe this or next week I will do that. I took two pictures to show the reflectors in one of them. I really wish it were full rigid.

This is nice! I like the logo a lot on the frame. Never thought id see Ksyrium wheels without drop bars :) .. nice alternating spacer colors too. (I'm in a complimenting mood today)

Yup, same "Dark Dirty Blue" as mine (but I've got a 60cm), and same as mine, the rear rack braze-ons are not evident in the photo -- but they're there. I think that's the clearest difference between CC and Pacer frames. Pacer for some reason also routes the brake cable on top, but doesn't have the fixie-friendly horizontal dropout.

Nice ride! I'd like to get some wide and knobby tires to take it out on the trails from time to time. Are you a Seahawks fan (bike color scheme)? haha. (I'm originally from Seattle)
