I would like to look at nice saddles soon; however, I have a few other things that I need to purchase first (decent trunk bag w/ panniers; bell / air horn; Topeak Road Morph pump). I'm having quite the troubles trying to justify these costs with my wife right now! She thinks that if I spend this money on the bike she gets the same amount to go spend on decorating the house!

Oh yeah... and one other reason I have this gel seat cover is because the dealer threw it in for free (along with the water bottle)!

Thanks for the suggestion... I am just about to try this since my Bor Yueh rack came with some that I won't be using.

Regarding SilverExpress's comments, do you really think that the front fender and the P-clamp would produce enough compressive forces to cause any damage?

You can put a rubber strip out of an old tube under the clamp, if your fork is indeed carbon. The strip or else plasti-dip or heat-shrink coating may otherwise protect the paint.

Thanks... I'll try that since the fork is carbon.

Thank you all!

The beast to all the beauties in this thread:

bilder 05-21-06 08:43 PM

May as well add my beast to the pile while we are at it.

Just changed the tires over to slicks that a friend gave me.

I am just getting started with commuting. Will add a rack and/or a bag for gear in the near future.

This is my commuter, and my only bike. I call him Karl.

1999 Specialized Hardrock
Recent new cassette and chain
Delta universal megarack
Vistalite taillight
when it's night I have a CatEye HL-EL300 in black

Here is my commuter:

Specialized Crossroads. It's evolved a little over time into a single speed.

Running a 44x18 gearing with a singulator on the back. Bullbar and brakes were a donation from a buddy. I've built this on the cheap. lol. Still a work in progress but fun to ride.

and hey, chicks dig single speeds... I guess. lol!

Nice looking bike! Is it a SS? What's the gearing? I just purchased a Bianchi San Jose and i'm considering dropping it to a 42x16 and getting slightly more road-friendly tires.

Does your new bike like playing the N64? :D

notfred 05-23-06 11:45 PM

For the moment it's a single speed, but I'm thinking of getting a flip-flop rear wheel for it. I'll play around with the configuration a bit I'm sure, I just got it, so I haven't really explored everything I can do with it yet.

The gearing is 44/16, which is working out pretty well for me.

And it's not an N64, it's a Dreamcast :)

Very slick bike. That should be a model for handlebar height. Nicely bobish, if you're into that sort of stuff. And I like that the tire labels are in line with the valve stems.

caloso 05-26-06 12:16 PM

Yup. I think Grant P. would approve.

Burd 05-27-06 08:02 PM

Very nice, MF.

Nice bike, mariner! I wish I had the time to work on an old lugged frame.

Anyways more pics of my bike, not much of a commuter yet, but I'll get a rack soon.(click for bigger pics)

I got it used for $150 sans pedals at a bike swap in '95 I think.

Pretty much all orig. Shimano 600.

That white scratch on the head badge is from when I had it on top of my old car, and I stupidly drove under one of those parking lot height bars. Anyway, the handlebars grappled the bar, and utlimately took of the entire rack and bike off my car with 4 super loud snaps (the clips snapping off the roof of the car). I look behind me and the bike is swinging with the rack still attached to it. I felt pretty stupid. Cool thing is that the bike other than the scratch on the head tube and some bent handlebars is just fine, and still rides like a champ. Go Trek.

Mine was pretty rough when I got it. Wish I would have taken a "before" picture. I posted a thread about the build in the Classic section..http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=198594

Adam, I'm glad your bike survived the encounter with the parking lot bars!

Adam Turman 05-31-06 07:56 AM

Me too. I was just amazed by what a tough bike it is. I wish I had a camera to document the occasion.

The newest addition to my collection - the bike that will become my commuter and possible light touring bike. Purchased this bike locally from a gentleman who commonly sells vintage bikes on craigslist and ebay that he finds at estate sales here in Dallas.

If the headbadge stamping is to believed it is a 1986 Schwinn Passage with Columbus Tenax tubes. Rack and fender mounts on both front and rear dropouts and seat stays. Three water bottle mounts and nice long chain stays. Headbadge is a Schwinn Chicago version stamped 0236. The serial number I located under the BB shell: SJ598388

The guys over in C&V have suggested that this is probably either a Mississippi made Schwinn or perhaps a Bridgestone import. Either way it should be a great ride, especially with everything I have planned for it.

The componet group is interesting to say the least and most certainly mixed:

Shimano Light Action long cage rear derailleur
SunTour XC Sport triple front derailleur
Sakae CX triple crank w/ 50/46/? chain rings
Sachs downtube shifters
DiaCompe brakes
Wheels have Belgium made Weinmann 27" rims with French made Schwinn Approved hubs.
Saddle is a San Marco
SR takes care of the stem, bars and pedals

--------------------------------

Changes and additions planned:

Fenders and rear rack will be added
7sp 14-28 freewheel on the existing 27" wheels
Kelly Takeoff's to move the shifting from downtube to brake levers.
Dual 20W front lights and a rear blinky wired into a rechargable battery.
SR Road Champion Sakae Randnner handlebar
Shimano 105 SLR Aero Brake Levers to replace the DiaCompes.
General tune up, chain, cables, brake pad replacement
IRC DuroWinner II 27x1 1/4" tires to handle the patches of rougher road on the routes to work.

And of course - pics!

- and you can see my Gazelle (the 'good' bike) hiding in the corner. Currently without a space on the rack till I get my next shipment from Performance.

Full thread started over in C&V on the bike, I'll be posting more photos in this thread as work progresses:
