This has been my favorite commuter for the last few years. It has been updated to 700c wheels and high pressure tires. This bike is fast and very reliable especialy in bad weather, the classic english three speed design has been refined for over 100 years and they are such a pleasure to ride on short to medium range commutes. I ride this about 10 miles a day in a dense urban area. The hardest part to find for the wheel conversion is the 36 hole Sturmey Archer hub, they can be found on three spaad kids bikes most often. The only limitation of this bike is the short cotter pin cranks, but I'd have to lose the full chaincase in order to update those. The seat got a little tweeked just before I took this photo, and I have since changed the fork to one that has a bit more rake.

Here is my recently made road-worthy 1997 Raleigh M50. A few lights and fenders and it is on it's way to being a full fledged commuter. I do commute on it now anyway since I wanted to save some wear and tear on my LeMond.
I picked it up off of ebay for $37. I think I did pretty good, but it does give me quite a workout (and I love it) Cheers, Brian http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1...y/7ed43b14.jpg |
Here's my everything bike -- commuter, weekend rides, whatever. I built it pretty econo: Used a Scattante frame from SuperGo, installed a new Simano bottom bracket and crank (Ultegra items that were being phased out), and all the Shimano components from my GT road bike (from back when GT was still an indie company). I typically commute four days a week on it and it's my trusty pal. We treat each other right.

It's an '87 Schwinn World Sport outfitted for my personal comfort. It's not exactly standard, but it gets the job done and gets me where I am going rather quickly.

Fourteen years old and thousands of kilometres on it (handlebar and brake levers are not stock, but come from the moment I bought the bike. Only the chain, tyres and brake pads have been changed since). Have you seen anything more faithful? In times when everything is quickly outdated and disposable I love this lasting and enduring piece of machinery. http://community.webshots.com/myphot...ecurity=PsPohW http://community.webshots.com/myphot...ecurity=Hzijht Downshift - gorgeous! |
