Mine

1 Attachment(s)
Here's mine. It's a German-made Patagonia. Fairly uncommon, even here in Poland. It's a genuine "commuting" bicycle. In this photo, it's pretty much stock as I bought it (used). However, I just bought myself a pair of drop handlebars and bar-end shifters. When I get them on, I suppose I'll have to add a new picture. ;-) It's got low-to-middle range components, but it works like silk. I both love and hate the SRAM twist-grips. It seems they are always in the way. That's one reason I'm shifting to drops. These are my first indexed shifters, and I love the way I can shift without thinking, but I don't really like how I accidently shift when I hit the gas, so to speak.

This bike was bought used, and is pretty beat. But I like that in my bikes.... less steal-worthy. I've always uglified my bikes since I first started riding back in the early-80s. Just made sense to me. :-) But I didn't need to uglify this one. ;-)

Strangely, I only have pictures of the bikes I've sold, or am in the process of selling. Without a rack or fender amongst them, they don't fit well in this thread, but they were all definitely commuters.

Bike that converted me to drop bars:

Yes, I did commute on it:

First fixed-gear:

Bad Boy... went back on ebay after two commutes -- the intact dork disk should be proof of that.

One of my long-time commuters gets torn down. Hate that I didn't take pics before stripping it. Was built with Phil Wood/DTSwiss/dura ace/fsa. This is the first bike that will be missed if it sells. Ive decided to move the parts to a Lemond Fillmore frame for the rack mount. If it doesn't sell I'll be secretly happy and hang it on the wall until it's eventual return. I hated the graphics, but the red and white grew on me.

Current commuter lineup:

- Salsa Las Cruces (only one currently in service)
- Lemond Fillmore custom build
- Velorbis Scrap Deluxe
- Surly Big Dummy

I'm as attached to the Las Cruces as much as I was the s-works langster. One of these days, I'll get over it and replace it with a more practical frame - meaning rack and fender mounts. Short of full-custom, I can't find a frame I'm entirely happy with. The Salsa Casseroll is the frontrunner right now. Could realistically end up with two casserolls, one geared and one fixed.

Very nice stable of "usta haves" JeffS. The Colnago is very pretty, but there is something about that Cannondale that speaks to me.

Thanks. I really liked the look of that bike. I had it and the Specialized at the same time though and it just wasn't as enjoyable to ride. Most of that was due to the huge difference in components between the two. Had it been a 63 instead of a 60 I would have likely kept it.

Those are all nice bikes, but that Bad Boy is pretty nifty.

Interesting. I did not know the Bad boy came in a full rigid. Looks to be the same frame as my M400 but has a little taller gears.

Here is a more current picture of my M400.
Put some riser bars on it. (making it look more like the bad boy) and fenders since the last picture I posted.

Less than a tank of gas...........

I'm commuting with a $30 pawn shop Raleigh mountain bike. The seat was free, the rear rack was on clearance at Toys R Us for $1.60, and the groovy riser bars came off a discarded little girls bike. Total investment= $31.60.

More here.

always liked that kickstand at the back increases stability particularlly in loading and unloading. The sad thing is with the Giant Rincon I currently ride there is not one that fits and can only mount in the center.

nice recumbent been wanting to test drive one of those seems like it would be nice. Though the local rei does not carry them and nor do some of the local bike shops out here. Certainly seems like they are in a niche market, though it seems it would be interesting.

I have posted this ride before but I have completed the commuter bike transformation as I just added waterproof panniers and fenders today to go along with everything else. The goal is to not need to drive in once a week to replenish supplies and also to be able to ride in wetter weather more easily.

My New Bike

I finally got my new commuter bicycle yesterday. It has an internally geared hub. So far I love it.

Wow! Goregous bike! I dig the lacing pattern on the rear hub, the brakes, the drop/flare bars. Heck. I like it all! How's it ride?

It rides great! It's sooo much nicer than my old bike (the one that got me into commuting by bike). Right now I'm getting some pain from the saddle, but my understanding is that the leather saddles just take some time to break in and then they are great. The bike store that built it up for me was great, and I'd highly recommend them.

Very nice.:thumb: I like the black path racer look.

Sonoma76 08-09-08 05:27 PM

what kind of internal hub is that? It looks like an SRAM iMOtion 9, the same that I have on my swobo.

reedie 08-09-08 06:45 PM

It's the Shimano Nexus 8 speed (also called the red band).

Here's mine. I only just started commuting with it August 5, but I can already tell I will have many years of commuting on this bike ahead of me. It rides like a dream.

My previous bike was a single-speed cruiser which I would ride to the bus stop to go to and from work, but the ride was 2 miles and space on the bus rack was never guaranteed and I was too afraid to ride all the way to work.

I bought the Mariner with my economic stimulus check with the plan that if I was able to fold the bike I could take it on the bus even when the rack was full. Then I had the (probably irrational) fear that if the rack was full and the driver didn't let me take it on the bus I would be screwed, so I thought about just riding the bike the whole way to work (12 miles round-trip) and I could get some exercise as well. I have to credit bikeforums.net for giving me the courage to ride on the street even though sidewalk riding is allowed in my city (except in business districts, but there are none where I ride). I do struggle a little with the hills on my commute, but the hills keep getting easier every day.

Awesome dude! It's always great to hear about someone having fun with a new commute.

What handlebars and brake levers are those?

On which bike? Mine?

mosquito 08-10-08 07:19 AM

Yep. I have an IGH too and those bars would be perfect for my shifter, as they don't mount on my moustache.

My 7.5 FX daily commuter

1 Attachment(s)
Here is a picture of my daily commuter, have had it a little of over 3 months. I ride it 5 days a week and put 100 miles of commuting on to it each week.

So far and I have added the following and should be just about done:

Blackburn Headlight and 3.0 tail light
Planet Bike Super Flash
Bontrager Rack
Forte Campus pedals
Airzound Air Horn
SKS 45mm fenders
Flash Flag.

The bars are Soma Sparrow. The break levers are Tektro Eclipse. I like the handlebars as they provide me several hand positions, and are narrow enough to be able to get through tight spaces.
