Looks nice! It looks like the San Jose has rack braze-ons, any reasoning for choosing a beam-type seatpost rack over a standard one?

That beam rack gets swapped between the Bianchi and my mountain bike. The standard rack is on my regular commuter:

I switch bikes like women switch shoes, but this one sticks, and it's the one that I use the most over all. it does everything well and it's setup perfectly as a city commuter.





Because of the recent accident, this is the bike I'm stuck with for at least a couple more months:

Is that the Topeak MTX EX? Are you happy with it or do you wish you had gotten the A/E/V type? I currently have the Explorer on my main commuter, but I am looking for a rack for my upcoming road bike that does not have the braze-on's.

This is the bike that takes me to work and back every day, 38 km round-trip.
Half of it on pavement, the other half on gravel roads and even a couple of km on singletrack.

Changes and additions to the stock bike:
Wheels - I got a killer deal on a pair of Crank Brothers Cobalt 29er. I've kept the original wheels as my winter set with studded tires on.
Saddle and pedals - transferred from my old commuter.
Chainguard - Mostly to keep the chain free from snow spraying from the rear wheel in winter. Snow that otherwise would find its way to the derailleurs and clog them up.
Bar-ends - Topeak Bar’n Mirror
Lights - Dinotte 1200+ in front and a Dinotte 140L tail-light
Mud flaps - NOS from the 70's that I found on eBay.

Fenders and rack are Scott's "Urban Kit". The rack is made by Topeak and is MTX compatible.

Many think that the rack sitting directly on the fender with no other support looks flimsy, but the looks are deceiving.
The fenders are made of box-section aluminum and the fender stays are L-profile fiberglass composite.
That adds up to a super-stiff assembly. I have ridden the bike with 20 kg (45 lbs) on the rack and it doesn't move at all.

More info on that chain guard you're using? I've looked for one that could be used with derailers and multiple chain rings, but haven't seen one until yours.

Topeak QR EX. It works fine but without the side adapters for panniers the capacity is a bit limited for me. I originally bought it during my early days of commuting because the old steel mountain bike I revived didn't have any braze-ons either and I eventually outgrew it for a "normal" day's commute. Some people have issues with those swaying but once attached mine stays put - I just tape the spacers on real tight and clamp it down.

I will say - and this is completely in vain - I prefer a more traditional look to my commuters and the beam rack tends to be a bit too "modern" of a look to me. It is functional, though.

Could you tell me more about this bike? It looks like you have an IGH hub (which one?) controlled by an STI type shifter (which one?) What is the rear spacing on the San Jose?

The bike is modeled after Sheldon Brown's San Jos8 he built from the stock single speed steel San Jose. I pretty much copied everything he did including originally the twist grip shifter that came with the hub. The spacing is 130mm with a Shimano 8r36(?) hub that I think is called a "redband" hub but not sure. The shifter is a Versa VRS-8 but in hindsight I may have just gone with the Jtek bar end shifter since the Versas were ~ 2x the cost of what the Jtek was but that's history now. The rims are Sun cr-18.

My new (used) Rivendell Bleriot bike I ride for commuting and recreational road rides.
I use a NiteRider miNewt.600 headlight. Plenty bright and doesn't interfere with the Sigma computer if it is on the brightest setting (which is all I would really like to use anyway).
Have to transfer my Topeak rear rack and slide on bag from my other bike. I really like how the rack has a track that the bag slides onto and it holds it nicely. No need for cords.
I tend to switch back-n-forth between clipless Speedplay Frogs and MKS Touring Pedals.
I will hopefully add fenders soon. Though I like the fenderless look better.

Skirt protectors. For when you are wearing a skirt or a kilt, it won't touch the spokes.

I actually would like one of those for a build I'm doing for my wife (decorative more than anything else), but a google search of the product number hasn't gotten me anywhere so far. Oh well.
