These are those MKS Lambda pedals I was talking about a few posts up (and the small spacers I used to move 'em out a touch). Love, love, love these pedals.

Agreed, the Lambdas are quite nice. I still want to try the MKS RMX pedals, though.

What are those extender-looking doohickies the pedals are screwed into?

My urban assault vehicle: a '93 Specialized Crossroads with Nashbar Townie bags, Nashbar Trekker handlebars, and a Nordic trailer. Now, 'this' is a ride!!!!!

A couple of these:

I run one on steady and one on flash. Great deal for the money, and the AAA battery life is excellent.

My new "lite" commuter:

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...4&d=1352755418
http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...6&d=1352755509

Bike started life as an employee purchase, wicked cheap, of a 2005 Gary Fisher Cronus urban bike. 1x9, balloon tires, BB7 brakes (205mm up front -- yowza!), Bontrager Switchblade Al fork.

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...0&d=1352937348

As soon as it arrived, it got chopped and given to my dad. 700c x 35 front w SA 70mm drum brake, 24 x 2.5" rear, B67 saddle, ape-hangers, brakes linked to one lever with Problem Solver 1-into-2 gizmo:

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...6&d=1352937011

He wasn't thrilled with it, traded him a Dahon to get it back, at which point it became my drop bar commuter. 2x9 drivetrain, Ultegra bar-ends, Ultegra GS rear der, LX fd, Cane Creek brake levers, 26 x 1.25 tires. (Historical Note: that's a tanker going through the old Memorial Bridge, connecting Portsmouth NH to Kittery ME, RIP):

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...7&d=1352937065

Traded to a friend for work on the shop website as a mtn bike. 3x9 drivetrain, XT cranks, XT low-normal RD, XT integrated brake/shift levers, 26 2.2 knobbies:

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...8&d=1352937141

...and back to it's current incarnation:

http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...5&d=1352755465

Still with the same XT/LX drivetrain, 46/34/24 chainrings, 11-32 cass. Upside down townie bars from a Trek Zara. Hand-stitched leather grips and tt protector. Brooks B17 Special saddle. Carradice bag and QR support. Trek Flare 2 rear light and another Planet Bike on the nds seatstay; Niterider 250 on the bars, Trek Ion 2 on the nds fork leg. Shimano A-520 pedals -- spd on one side, flat on the other. Stars of the show are the Big Apple 2.35 tires, 26 on the rear, 29 up front. The fork is a SASO carbon leg fork (Rockshox sticker is a joke...) with 5mm more offset than the original Bontrager Switchblade, but same crown to d/o measurement which quickened steering appreciably; 29er replacement rim up front slows the steering back down. 205mm front disk was way overkill and noisy, so it got replaced with a 160 rotor.

The 250 lumen light is as low as I'd ever go for night commutes and will probably be upgraded to a Cygolite 410. Carradice bag and support was on closeout from Peter White and holds just enough for a day's work. Love the positioning on the bike, kind of a mid-drop, but might explore other bar options. This bike is super for my 38 mi r/t commute, speedier than it looks and great over gravel and crappy New England roads. This will be my snow bike, outfitted with studded tires once snow and ice start sticking, and will get fenders.

For now, it's an absolute hoot to ride and super fun.

canyoneagle 11-14-12 07:48 PM

I love me some 2.35 Big Apples, Mconlonx!
My commuter is in the same vein, though I've since gone to the 50mm Marathon Supremes.

I'm shocked how good they are. The 2.2 Bontrager Hanks that came with the original bike felt wicked sluggish, but the Schwalbes are fantastic.

Yes! The Big Apples have a great ride quality. Surprisingly low rolling resistance, with a big, fat, round profile that makes cornering a pure joy.

Here's my workhorse / 29er in its current commuter guise, sans fenders at the moment, shod with the 50mm Marathon Supremes. I've tilted the rear rack a bit forward - I have plenty of heel clearance, and it works great with my panniers (pulls the weight balance towards center):

Do you commute into GJ from Palisade? I commute from the area of the college out to Fruitvale/Clifton and I see a few other regulars on Orchard Ave every day.

Heya!
I've been unemployed since April, so no "commute" per se, but I've been riding into Clifton and GJ for other things. I primarily use the canal road and the Colorado River path system. It is really nice to be able to ride just about anywhere in the valley - lots of options.
I'm looking for bike related work in town, and possibly with DT Swiss on 25 Road, so the "commute" may resume soon.
Maybe we'll see one another in the not too distant future!

Couple days ago went to downtown in the morning to get a couple of things there and got a pic of one of the parking lots. its quite empty at the time I was there, compared to how it would be on a weekend.

My commuter

My bike's been on here once before, but every year it changes a little. It started life as a 2003 Trek 7200, but it's gotten cooler with age! It still has the original Alivio derailleurs, and despite bent and bent back they've worked great the whole time. The trekking bars give me three hand positions I like, and sometimes I even but my hands forward and my elbows on the near part of the bars for a pseudo aero position.

I needed a bike to do double duty as a winter race team training bike and a commuter. The 2012 Kona Jake The Snake, with a few modifications fills the bill perfectly.

The base bike is an all aluminum setup with 105/Ultegra mix.
I switched the CX chainrings to road-compact (Ultegra) gearing.
Different (carbon) seatpost and seat for comfort.
Different stem for fit.
I got rid of the junk cantilevers and replaced with TRP CX9's.
Of course, 700x28 Conti GP4Seasons give me the ride-with-impunity toughness and grip I need for Seattle winters.
SKS P35 Chromoplastic fenders with full reflective mudflaps
Lighting setup is a Planetbike Superflash Turbo and Niterider Minewt 600 Cordless.

I prefer a backpack since I have very little to carry (laptop and some small asundries - keep a large cache of clothes/supplies at work so no need to carry)

How do you like those mini-V's? I am contemplating a switch myself.

commo_soulja 11-20-12 02:11 AM

My main commuter got cleaned up, new wheels/tires, brake pads, cables and frame decals.

Isn't that true! Especially commuters and city bikes: When we first get a bike it's a Trek 7200 or a Giant something - but after a few months, or years, it goes through so many changes that we don't know what it is any more. I have two commuters, "The Rig" and the "Black Knight" bike, that used to be a Trek mountain bike and a Giant Escape. But I look at them now and my goodness, I have no idea what I should call them now - they've morphed. They're better, but different - -

I love them. I like the fact that they don't stick out past the frame like the cantis do, and they definitely squeal less. I know the CX9s are supposed to be made for the new gen Shimano levers but I think they would be a little better if they had slightly more pad travel. You'd get that with the TRP CX8.4, but you'd lose a little mechanical advantage. These do have an abundance of that though so it wouldn't be a problem. There is plenty of clearance for the fender under the CX9 so I think losing 6mm of clearance wouldn't hurt you. (you may have noticed I run my fenders really high as it is, to provide clearance for winter studded tires when the time comes)
