First time in a few years commuting for me [this morning]. I ended up configuring a CamelBak with Kydex inside to ensure the curve of the bag matched my back even when the bladder was full (3L). That allowed me to go all 42 miles without stopping for water.

Yuck not me. Tried it for awhile but no more.

We shall see how long I last before I don't want it on my back either.

PennyTheDog I was wicked lucky. Dude was driving a car, not a truck, and he slammed on his brakes right before he t-boned me, so his bumper hit the bike below the frame and fork. Wheels were toast, both disc rotors were bent, and the h'bars and rack bent when they landed on either the car's hood or on the ground, but there wasn't even a scratch on the fork, frame, or cranks. Front fender cracked at the fork crown bracket, mirror cracked, and bar tape got torn, and that was all of the damage to the bike. I walked away with a sprained wrist, a few bruises, and an increased sense of vigilance when crossing intersections.

Seriously loving my new commuter: early 90's Hard Rock scored on Craigslist with nice Araya wheels, just needed some TLC. Added 1.4" Michelin Wild Run'r slicks, Cascadia ATB fenders, Blackburn TRX-1 rack, and the Thule panniers mentioned earlier on here for such a steal of a deal -- they're indeed as great as everyone has already said.

Been trying to find an old rigid mtb for this purpose for awhile, everyone in the bay area wants $250 for a beat to hell old bike. The few I see that are good deals are usually on bikes that are way too small. Drives me nuts.

nice looking bike. would you say it is similar to a Surly cross check? steel and all. How do you like it? I have a Fantom CX aluminium with steel fork. I wonder how much i would like an all steel bike. I rode a raleigh clubman and it was so smooth.

bnunruh 10-27-14 03:01 PM

It's very similar to the cross check. The geometry is exactly the same. I think the only difference is the cross check has eyelets in the middle of the front fork. I really like it, the ride is so smooth, but I've only ever had steel bikes before.

These are not the best photos but I snapped them with my phone in the rain last night to see how my need spoke, fork and seat stay reflectors work.

I think they up the visibility level somewhat and my fred status. They are just cheap four inch plastic pieces from deal extreme. They snap on securely for now. They should be easy to remove also.

On the spoke and seat stay is just reflective tape I bought at MEC.

I also just installed a new set of Marathons so they have only seen one ride and have not gotten gunked up yet.

figured I'd have a little fun on the commute today and tomorrow- there's a tail light mounted inside the pumpkin so it works as a tail light. happy halloween!

Looks good and practical. That bag stuffed under the saddle however; doesn't that belong on the other end of the top tube attached to the stem, not the seatpost? That would drive me nuts.

yes it does, it worked well on my other bike, not so much on this one. I have since moved it to the front.

Thanks! and Yes! Lighting is on the way. I've had a Alfine dynamo front hub for about 6 months just waiting to get the motivation to lace it up. The $2 Chinese frog lights are doing great for now.. Most of the bike lanes here in Clearwater are well lit.

SpotOn 10-31-14 02:44 PM

Got a saddle bag, led lights and valve caps. What do you guys think?
Any recommendations to what I can add or change to the ride?

More people should start riding bikes in my area. They do not know what they're missing out on.

Excellent hacks! My favorite is the dowel for mounting the light.

PennyTheDog 10-31-14 09:02 PM

Wow, that's about the best post ever!

Thanks, noglider. :thumb: I was just staring at the basket trying to figure out how to mount a light and it dawned on me.

screech, it's good to see people get serious about lights. It pays off, eh?
