What kind of handlebars do you got on there? I'd like to try a semi-bent setup like that.

Ooh I can finally post a picture in this thread! :D This was my first decent bike, a 1993 Mongoose Rockadile. I just got it put together properly yesterday, and I plan to start riding it to work this week. :) I've been riding it all over town and so far it seems perfect for the task. It's quite heavy but it feels extremely solid.

this is actually a cheap handle bar from .....those black bikes from China. I am not sure how you can these bar in the States.
I trim the ends by 3" each. So if looks like a fake Nitto...

recently just finished this bike... i intend to use it as a winter commuter/rain beater type bike, but i enjoy riding it regardless because of the bar setup. iro jamie roy frame, generic tange fork, and some other goodies..

I've been reading about winter commuting, and I hear a lot about having a "Winter Beater." I live in Alaska, so the winters are pretty rough, but I'd like to use my bike as far into the year as I can, all year if I can. (Up until now, my only available transportation has been my own two feet and any friends I can beg rides off of occasionally. So a bike is a big step up. :) ) But my lovely Breezer was a) very expensive, and b) a gift from my dad, so if winter commuting on it is likely to ruin it, I'd a lot rather fix up a beater. Opinions?

I was thinking maybe I could make that green Schwinn in the pictures into a winter beater. Opinions on that, too?

It is! I'm in love already. I'm going to have the bike guy put the seat up a couple of inches for me tomorrow, because I don't have any tools yet, but I've been riding it around the parking lot of my apartment, and oy. I'm absolutely in love.

My '03 Jamis Nova with a green Brooks on it. I like it but am thinking of selling it as it seems to be slightly small. It's a 53cm and I'm about 5'11". I've tried a couple different stems and can't seem to get comfy, though I have a Ritchey adjustable that I've yet to try. I might try that and if that works out I'll keep it. Otherwise I'll be selling it to get something that fits a bit better.

Here's my commuter. My first "real" bike. It's 53cm, a tad small for me. I'd like to get a new stem to stretch it out a bit, but I'm pretty ignorant about these things still. I commute about 20 miles a day, 3 to 5 days a week. I used to keep a pump and cable lock attached to the bike, but I've been keeping them in my bag lately. I like the cleaner look.

Nice rides! I especially like the Jamie Roy.

Trash picked this baby. Got a 25.6 post and away we go. Then found although the tire said 26x1 3/8 they are really the obscure 650B tires or 584mm to be exact. For more info see this site. Too bad the frame is small and I dislike the 165mm cranks but otherwise she is a great commuter. Just bought some fenders which are for 700mm(622mm) wheels fearing 26"(559mm) might be too small. Fun bike! Hope to get rack that will adjust to be horizontal. Hope the tires last, at $50/each it kinda defeats the whole economics of self propelled commuting!

Very nice, I always love the look of a custom commuter. I'd like to know how you made the fenders, too :).

The fenders were made from an old plastic garbage can that had split open. I cut a slice out of it vertically to 2.4" wide. I made a bracket for the fork attachment out of aluminum. The support for the rear is made from 1/8" wire bent to shape. The rear is just a similar piece of plastic wire-tied to the seat tube and the seat post rack. I still have to make an extention for the rear of the rear wheel to keep water off of my back. The front fender is really the one I needed since water was getting sprayed in my face.

How are your bikes so clean? These shots mostly look pretty candid, but the bikes are spotless. My bike is covered with road goo mixed with brake dust and chain gunk. The brake dust is especially annoying. If I pick up the bike by th wheel, the stuff gets into my skin and only comes out with a stiff brush or green scrubby. How do you keep the crud out of your apartments? Luckily, I have a laundry room.

The guy who makes his own fenders also sports a Chris King headset. I love it!

i noticed that too... very nice. best headset ever. this guy knows what is good.

It's harder to make a good headset with broken garbage cans.:D
