It's beer... Psssst... lol

No, one pannier carries my office clothes and shoes and the other one my laptop. Lunch goes in the basket.

Back on risers. This thing is way too fun to commute on.

Jeez, I always love visiting this thread. So many beautiful, functional rides (and functionality in my eyes is a form of beauty)

Anyway, I can't remember the last time I posted here but here are my two main commuters:

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3WoaL7Kjv...0/DSC_6572.JPG

1981 Lotus Excelle mixte frame that I threw parts at. I used to have it built up with 700c wheels and a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hub, but now it has 650b wheels, 30-40-50t crankset, and a 14-30 6-speed freewheel. Dynohub as usual. It has a wonderfully cushy ride but I'm thinking of putting a double crankset back on it. I moved from MI to Pittsburgh recently and thought I'd need the 1:1 for hills but I got over that real quick.

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zs3pMS8kn...321_174830.jpg

And there's the old faithful 1979 Raleigh Superbe which I've been riding the piss out of for 2.5 years, pretty much stock (completely overhauled, of course) aside from some attachments and a 20-tooth rear cog. I keep a pannier on it, not sure why it isn't in this photo. I'm probably riding the Lotus or the Superbe 4/5 days of the week.

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fJQyt-9L5...0/DSC_6675.JPG

Anyway, back to the "hills" thing. I actually got so used to the hills that I went forward and built this '65 Hercules 3-speed with a Sturmey-Archer S2C (2 speed kick shift coaster brake) and 700c wheels. Surprisingly, I have been able to haul myself up a half-mile 10% grade without standing up to grind. I've been riding this bike surprisingly often, but usually it's to run across the neighborhood to do laundry or find food. DarkShot I think you've inspired me to stickerbomb one side of the rims on this bike. I've since removed the factory decals.

New frame after accident. Still some issues (creaking and moaning at BB I think).

Where'd you get that chainring?

The bike in front looks cool...but the one in the back must be really tough to pedal... :D

That is a seriously fun bike! Where do you find your stickers? I can't seem to find much of anything around here. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

PennyTheDog 09-11-17 08:02 AM

The red mixte is beautiful! Is that a cambium saddle? How do you like that? I've been curious about those.

Did you overhaul the internal gear hub yourself? Did you just dig in with a manual, or what? I've been too intimidated to try that.

Thanks!! And yes, it's a cambium C17. I love it. I bought it a little over a year ago for about $100, since it was on sale. Very worthwhile purchase. If I was to be extremely picky, a B17 is usually on the slightly wide side for drop bars but since I have the bars on the Lotus set somewhat high and since this is a commuter, the regular C17 is perfect. I wouldn't say I have particularly narrow hips; I do ride the B66 on the Superbe and it feels just fine. I have to say that the cambium was a bit stiffer than I would have preferred, but definitely within tolerances. The longest I've done in the saddle at once is 80 miles and it was magnificently comfortable. I used a B17 on this bike for a very short time but got tired of having to worry about covering it up. After all, this is my primary rider.

Edit: My saddle was the "slate" color and it faded extremely quickly. Not that I really care, but it could be of concern to some. Back when I first built the bike, it had black bar tape with a black B17 saddle. I then installed the C17 new, and bought this gray Fizik bar tape that kind of matched it. Waited a year before actually doing it, all the while riding the piss out of it and regularly parking it outside at school ... you can see the difference in color. Ha!

As for the hubs, yes, I did them myself. Sturmey-Archer AW hubs are very easy to do and very intuitive. The first time I did it, over two years ago, I used Sheldon Brown's instructions to disassemble it but really, once I got the ball ring unscrewed, it all made sense. I've done countless 3 and 4 speed hubs ever since then. I'd suggest you try it! It's a lot of fun.

RubeRad 09-12-17 10:05 AM

Hmm, I rescued a folding bike from the trash with a 3-speed IGH, I think it's Sturmey-Archer. Since I've got nothing to lose, maybe I'll take it apart for funsies

phx1973 09-12-17 02:08 PM

Took the long way home, and boy was it worth it.

Where did you get the frame? I had an accident with my specialized diverge and it needs a new frame.

Through my LBS and the Specialized crash replacement program (20% off frame set retail - sort of).

Are those panniers the Axiom hydracores?

I was looking at those online. Are they really waterproof?

Hi.
They're the Axiom Seymour Oceanweave 22+
Happy with them so far - kept everything bone dry and it rained quite a lot the day I took the photo

That's awesome. Wonder if I could fit a chain guard on my e-bike with a single front ring.

This is my 10-year-old son's school commuter and independence machine. It's a Raleigh Cadent 24, with a spring-loaded rack and new cockpit. It's a really nice bike; I love seeing him cruise around town on it.

I have a 10 year old son too. And he happens to be needing a new bike. I think I'd better now show him this beauty. Haha!

New pic of my junked up Trek. I finally got new lights, and some zip strips to remount the front basket. The office is finally letting my park inside these days.

Now how you gonna get a rack and fenders on that?

GP 09-18-17 09:04 AM

I see triathletes commuting on their bikes everyday with backpacks.

The Kestrel came with 30% credit. I used that credit to upgrade my wife's bike to a Diamondback Haanjenn Metro. Pretty much getting the Diamondback for free. I can use the Diamondback to commute as well. I'm still trying to find a good set of light weight fenders.
I live in SFBA / Silicon Valley. We don't have snow & it rarely rains here. The fenders are not really high priority. I see most people commute on their bikes without the fenders.
