They're Shimano SPD M520's....they came stock with my Giant OCR C2, as well as with the Kona. (I put Looks on the Giant, though). They're double sided clipless, with a platform insert on one side, so you can ride either way. They may come stock with a new pair of pedals, or you may be able to get them separately.....

If you already have SPD's without an insert, you can also get Winwood Deckster pedal inserts that clip into SPD's....you can get them @ PBS.

here are some low-res pictures of my commuter. it's an NYCBikes cyclocross frame (it's inexpensive, indestructible, and a bit heavy) with a smattering of different parts. the yellow fenders make the bike. it's got studded snow tires on it in the pictures, but when it's not snowy, it has michelin transworld city tires. and that's my lock riding on the rack on the rear. i think kryptonite calls it the new york 3000 because it weighs 3000 grams. really, it's not far off of 3kg. anyway, it matches the fenders too.

Man, the PB yellow fenders seem to be super popular these days. Pictures of my two bikes are attached.

You need a snowmobile.

My bike is nothing compared to some of the bikes i'm seeing in here, but it's still fun nonetheless:

And when the weather is nice, I commute on this:

I rode to work on a Specialized mountain bike with slicks last year - this year I switched to a Jamis Commuter 3.0 which I just picked up and tried out this weekend through Cleveland slush:

Here's my daily bad weather commuter.

I still need :

Fenders
Pedals
New cog or chainring for daily commute.

Please feel free to comment or give feedback. I'm a bit of a newbie.

Thanks for looking.

(the one that holds 3 8 pks of 20 oz bottles.) the saddle is from a Schwinn sidewinder, the front fender is from a 1952 Schwinn Traveler 3 speed. I don't have the rear fender mounted yet because i need to make a bracket for it. I have a CatEye opticube 800+ candlepower headlight and a blackburn Mars 2.0 blinkie. as a backup I have the lightset from the '52 schwinn as well. my rear panniers are not mounted right now, but the front one is actually a Rhode Gear "diaper bag" that is supposed to mount on a child seat. it works great to hold tools and stuff I may need to access while riding. I ran out of reflective tape before I could go to crazy with it, but I think I will be seen. I carry/attatch various other things depending on where I'm going. this is my all purpose bike and it handles well. the pic shows it with a 25lb Pumpkin on the back, but I've had 2 bikes strapped on there before. sometimes I see what I can carry just for the sake of saying hey, I can do it. the other pic is when I got it before I had a chance to fix/geek it up

I have a '84 Trek 850, it's 35 lbs with stock components.

I want to lighten it, what is making it so dang heavy? Ibexbikes.com sells a hybrid bike for $369, which is only 22 lbs.

2nd hand Gazelle 'champion mondial' cross bike (late 70's - early 80's) bought for 75€. New tires, fenders, brake pads & hoods + a few bits and pieces for about the same amount and I've got me a VERY sweet ride indeed!

OK...here's my new commuting steed:

http://home.comcast.net/%7Emnkwrobes/RaleighPic.jpg

A 1986 Raleigh Marathon, bought off of craigslist 2 days ago, near perfect condition, barely ridden at all (it still had the factory decals on the rims that should have been peeled off 21 years ago) it came with the original manual, it rides like a dream, and fits me perfect. I still need to lose the front reflector and add a cyclocomputer to it. I already added lights, a rack, and bottle cage.

Weather is starting to turn warmer so I'm going to get in the groove again. I'm sure this baby will shave off some time in comparison to my Target-bought Schwinn Ranger.

^^^^Nice snag. Doesn't still have the original tires on it does it?

It does. They look like they don't have more than 100 miles on them.

And that brings up an interesting question...should I replace the tubes and tires due to its age? Or run whats on there till the first flat? ;)

You can't tell from the pic...but they really dont look like they seen much road at all.

xB_Nutt 02-22-07 09:14 AM

I would be concerned about dry rot on tires that old. Depends on how brave you are or how fast you ride. But if they look sound then I would just ride them until you need to replace them.

You'll be riding on your head if you try to push it with those old tires/tubes on there !!!

Good luck !!!!!

I upgraded to those rims after 3 warranty replacements on the stock Sun rims.

I like it. Did you mean to give it a "rat rod" look with the red rims?

Holy cow~!

Where did you get those fenders? I must be looking in the wrong places...cause I can't find a set of chrome ones.

M_S 02-24-07 09:50 PM

Just bought a Jamis Aurora that I'll use for some touring (only on certain days when I can lock it up inside). Until then I'll keep using my beat-up bridgestone. On the Aurora the shop upgraded the shifters from the silly 20 dollar ones it came with to a 90 dollar pair of bar ends for no extra cost:D :D :D :D

I'll post pictures when I can find that darn camera.

EDIT: Trace22clawson, I love those old leather saddles- the kind that conforms to your butt over time. Is there anyone that still makes them, or is that one older?

jyossarian 02-25-07 03:00 PM

I locked my new commuter up and ran upstairs to get my camera to take a pic for you guys. By the time I got back, this was all that was left.

j/k...I just wanted to post that pic. Be careful locking up.

That's a brand new saddle. It's the Brooks B-17 Champion special. Do a search of the forums on "brooks" and I think you will find that 98% of the posts rave about the brooks. People in the touring forum don't seem like they will ride anything else. I've only got about 150 miles on my saddle so it's not broke in yet. People tell me that it happens around the 500 mile mark. Even though it isn't broke in yet, I don't have any complaints about it. The brooks saddles can be a bit pricey, and you have to take care of them (mostly just don't ride them wet.) You won't have any problem buying one... they are all over the place and every LBS has heard of brooks.

It's not ideal (it feels so heavy when it's loaded up) but it gets me there and back (16 mile round trip) :)

I have replaced the rear rim with a Rhyno Lite, added a Brooks B-17 saddle (smooth as butter) and a stem riser. The rear rack is a Axiom Journey Disc Brake Compatible. It has my latest version of my geek lights system: MR16 3 watt Luxeon headlight with 2 small aux. drive lights, 2 beehive 9 LED tail lights, one amber strobe and car horn. She doesn't look too bad for having about 10,000 miles on her. :D
