http://farm1.static.flickr.com/149/3...0013bca9_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/129/3...d2c19de8_b.jpg My 2006 Surly Karate Monkey. I had it built up by my local LBS (Boulevard Bikes in Chicago). I wanted a "townie" type bike w/an upright ride, single speed. This is my first fully new bike in a long time. My favorites are the Schwalbe Big Apple tires--they're like riding on a cloud. I don't have the specs w/me, but I'll post them soon. There's nothing fancy on it--mid to low level parts to keep the cost down. It's really fun to ride and given the versatility of the frameset I'm hoping to play around w/it to get some different combos (gears/drops, etc.). I'll add a black chainguard and I want to replace the nice looking but way too brittle cork grips w/some leather ones I just ordered. Plus, of course, it's now got a compliment of lights. |
Lamplight: What brand fenders? I got the Zefal's....for the $$$ I am happy. But they are a squeeze around 27" wheels. (pic) And, I don't like the rear thin aluminum brace they include for attaching to the brake bar. One bend, maybe two...and after that, it will brake......no pun intended...
What are you using? They look nicer than mine! Could you move your fenders from bike to bike as your needs evolve or would it be too much of a PITA? Thanks! |
Cut out my own reflective tape... turned out HORRIBLE! But they help tons.

My Surly Cross-Check Fixed-Gear commuter
1 Attachment(s)
Thought I would upload my commuter again. Converted to fixed-gear last summer, but have not uploaded a picture of it since. Using Surly fixed-gear rear hub with 16t and 18t. Works nicely for commuting as well as the "wet" club ride on the weekends. Very versatile and enjoyable.

A couple of pics of my one-and-only bike, a 2006 Kona Smoke. Update from the pics I posted in June; now it actually looks like a commuter.
http://i3.tinypic.com/2i8db0g.jpg http://i18.tinypic.com/47vpj0w.jpg Usually I have a Cateye EL-300 for a headlight; right now it's some cheap off-brand light (left the cateye at college by accident). Rear light is a Cateye LD-120. Panniers are axiom appalachian/transit series. The yellow reflector and its partner red reflector (hidden under the panniers in those shots) were cannibalized off an old bike of my dad's. |
Here's my new (as of tuesday) Scott Sub 20 (2006). It's a very smooth ride :)

'06 novara bonanza, subtitled "way too much stuff on this bike". weight is not an issue, as riding this bike to work five days a week since may has caused me to loose 50 pounds. And great progress! Props. |

First is my usual commuter and load hauler - Raleigh Royal tourer, but the original compact crankset made me feel like I was riding through mud, and the quill pedals hurt my feet, so I switched them out for a more recent Shimano roadie set. Underneath is my single speed Urban Assault commuter in progress. When finished, it'll be SS, and have a rack over those fairly wide 26" ers. Cool!

Nice cabbage. What kind of mount do you use for one of those?

My commute includes singletrack, dirt roads, potholed pavement and moron mall traffic. There is not one original part on my old '91 Raleigh Tangent.( oh wait, the headset is still going strong:) ) |
This turd would me my "commuter". Well as you can see it's a Roadmaster "Mt. Fury" Its just the regular genaric bike. I bought at the PX (army's version of big lots) for 35 bucks. It's an ok bike for my super short commute but the gearing is crap, your either peddling faster than **** our your break'n a sweat getting to speed. I really need to get me a nice road bike like most of you have but their hard to come by in Korea, their into mountain bikes it seems.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...tures/bike.jpg Peace! |
Pez, let me be the first to NOT call your bike a turd. for right now it seems to be doing what you ask of it. maybe not exactly how you want, but it's working. I've had 3 brand new bikes in my life. one when I was 6 that came from Toys R Us, another when I was 15 (another toys r us special) when my hand me down POS got trashed by a car. I just quit riding that one. and a Tandem made by Pacific Cycle that may have a lot of low end parts, but does what I need it to do, from Meijer. I have decent bikes, but they are all old and were junk when I got them. many of the bikes I own would be considered turds by those standards, but I love them all and they all have or had a purpose. The fact that you can get on that "turd" and ride it to work or wherever you need to go makes it not a turd at all. And if it can't be any more than a turd in your eyes or anyone else's I would like to be the first to say I love all the turds I've had and all the ones I will in the future.

I thought I would add my recent induction to my bike barn. The attached image is an early 90's restored Novara Randonee I had a friend build for me. It has full 105 components and is simply smooth like butta. I am commuting on it now, so it has the following added since this picture was taken:
- Brooks B-17 Champion saddle - Rear Rack - Trunk bag - Sigma speed and cadence computer (wireless) - Trail Rat light - Blackburn handlebar mirror [edit: It also has race blade fenders] It is simply the best. Chris |

We needn't be expressings one's love for turds on such a forum... :p :D Ok ok I'm sorry but when I read that line I laughed so hard I think I pooped a little :p Anyway "turd" is a word I seem to use alot, maybe to often. That term was not saying my bike was a total peice of crap and I hated it. It just mean't it was sluggish and some what heavy, same with my VW Bus. But your right anything that can take me almost anywhere for free does deserve a better title than "turd". Also I'm sorry but I have to use your line in my signature, it's just to priceless. :D |
Pez, I'm on your side man.
That bike is a turd. I've had one, and while it does get you from point A to point B, it's almost worthless to me now. Just like turd. |

I figured I'd post a new shot of my foul weather bike, since it has changed quite a bit since I first posted it.

My go anywhere, anytime Fetish!
(I had to buy the frame just for the name & paint job!) Commute is 14m r/t through a college town littered with bad pavement and beer bottles, plus i like a little urban fun on the daily ride. Discipline 22" Magura Vader coil&oil 4" Hayes Mag/El Camino RF Atlas crank x0 drivetrain Cane Creek Chronos wheels 1.75" Marathons - awesome ride semi-homebrew 25w headlight & blinkies I ride this about 4500m/yr commuting, towing the kiddie trailer, etc. so i tried to build it pretty bulletproof. |
