Heartily approved. Although I do wonder how you can get by without lights.

getting my dedicated commuter bike set up!
Waiting on some larger tires to finish the fender install, going to put a +17, 80mm stem and maybe get a new seat to save my nice pants from destruction.

There's a real deficit of quality used bikes in this town, so when I was looking to source a commuter for my friend I skipped craigslist and turned directly to ebay. I bought this 1997 Novara for $200 including shipping. I had a few spare parts around the house, but otherwise all the original components worked well. I'll leave it to my friend to decide on F/R racks and panniers.

Is that one of those stems used by shops to get the fit dialed in? I saw some at my LBS the other day that had warnings to not actually ride the bike with one of those stems in place. It's only to be used on a trainer during the fit process.

presicely. I was trying to get the cockpit set up for commute clothing and not the technical fabrics I would have on my other bike. Changes are 1" higher and 20mm shorter than my fast bike with the same saddle position relative to the cranks.

now I put a 110mm stem on the bike that I had when I need an 80mm -17 to get in the position I want.

That is a very sweet bike! I especially like the chainguard! I don't understand why they don't come standard on most bikes; well, commuting bikes, anyway.

Cool, I like how you got the folded bike to mirror the shape of the work piece. Now you just gotta get naked, grab a hammer, and get into the picture in the same pose!

Because most bikes have rear, or front and rear derailleurs, which don't work very well with chain guards since the chain can be in lots of different positions.

Yes, but I've wondered before, whatever those positions are, they must occupy a space that is not needed by the chainstay or the wheel or the crank or the pedal or the foot, why not build a chaincase that encloses that space??

Like this chainguard from Velo Orange: (you can see a description here)

...although, to be honest, I'm not sure if it would fit every bike...

RubeRad 03-16-16 04:21 PM

"only works with a single chainring". And it only covers the 'top-right' area of the chain. I'm talking about enclosing the entire range of space that the chain occupies, in all possible front and rear derailleur settings.

I was able to get the medium SKS chainboard to work on a 3X8 drivetrain with a bit of fitting.

New to Me Austro Daimler Puch Pathfinder. Still sorting it out, but I've added the toe clips & straps, bottle holder, lights, and cheapo Blackburn rack. The bike was a $130 Craigslist find, clips & straps $9, bottle holder $1 at a swap meet. Ordered the "Cygolite Streak 310/Hotshot SL USB Light Combo" from "Bike to the Future" on Amazon, and got upgraded to the Cygolite 350 combo - a great deal!

Part of the upper lug is outlined, but none of the others. Possibly done by a prior owner?

Not mine, but saw it today while stopping for lunch. Some type of Gary Fisher 'townie' with a three speed twist grip and coaster brake set-up. The frame is a matte black color, so it looks better in person than the pictures:

I love min otto by Dirk Desmet, on Flickr

It's a sign under my saddle saying: "again one car less".
Lots of people in Belgium have that sign under their saddle.
(you can order right here: Weer een auto minder-fietsplaatje - 11.11.11 vzw )
http://winkel.11.be/shops/111111vzw/3683997-1.jpg

I put a sticker over it saying "I love my car" in a funny dialect :D which is currently a silly expression in a tv-series here in Belgium.
