I don't seem to have posted here yet. Here's my commuter: 2007 Giant TCX which i picked up in February this year used one EBay. Chain was a bit messy, but otherwise it was in good condition (seller claimed it had about 500 miles on it). So far i've put on almost 200 miles since i started riding it to work at the beginning of March 2007 (12 miles a day, 1-3 days a week, bike-train-bike commute).
It started out like this (i added the fender for the picture and the cranks/brakes aren't the factory issue equipment either). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ocrossBike.jpg After ordering parts and redoing the brakes completely, it's finally complete. I replaced the cheapo V-brakes with some Avid Shorty 4 cantilevers and replaced the cables/housings at the same time. The STI levers (Tiagra) and derailuers (105) were in fantastic shape though and only needed a bit of cleaning. Cranks are Truvativ Elita compact cranks with 50/34T chainrings and an SRAM 12-26 cassette in the back. I added Crankbrother Eggbeater SL pedals for their ease of use and simplicity when commuting. The wheels and tires were set aside to be used for cyclocross duty sometime in the future and replaced with wheels built by www.spinlitecycling.com (Velocity Deep-V rims, Ultegra hubs, and Sapim spokes) which should be strong enough to be able to take a beating from commuter duty. Tires are Continental Gatorskins with Mr. Tuffy liners and some Forte/Performance Bike puncture resistant tubes (which means these mofos are HEAVY!) But i'll take heavy over flat any day of the week when commuting. The gray patches on the fork, seat tube, chain stays, and crank arms are reflective tape. There's also reflective tape on the front of the fork and on the back of the seat stays. The headlights are a Cateye EL500 and a Planet Bike Alias and the tail light is a Cateye LD1000. SKS X3 rear fender keeps me clean and dry while i'm sitting on the Forte Fusion saddle. There is also a Planet Bike Protoge 8.0 on a Minoura mount on the stem. And the white bar tape was brand new installed by the previous owner before he shipped it to me. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010025.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010026.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010028.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010030.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010034.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010036.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010037.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010041.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...h_P1010042.jpg |

Here are a couple of pictures of my recently completed utility/commuter (longer post in vintage) it started life as an 1982 Nishiki International. Note the folding grocery basket.
here it is at night...with black and silver reflective tape. The whole frame has a top coat of a Duplicolor spray that makes the whole bike reflective. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...ikinight01.jpg Not many miles yet, but so far it is working well for what is intended for....throw a leg over it an use it..go get groceries, coffee, ride with the kid, go to the drugstore, etc |
Very nice SD, definitely like shiny things.

Gee, I haven't posted any pictures of my ride yet. I still have some detail work to do on it, but here's the bike after I put the lights/battery/trunk on last December.

Frankenbiker, that is one of the neatest bikes I have seen!! Even if looks like it is the size of a small car :)

Well, it certainly "hauls." I can load up the sides with eight xmart bags, a pizza on the back platform, and still have room in the trunk for rain gear, helmet, tools, sweater, dry shoes and other stuff. I do get noticed. Now that gas prices are once again up over the $3/gal mark, I'm glad I went to bicycle commuting. The pickup truck gets driven only when something is too big to fit on the bike, like this weekend when I needed to get a cubic yard of compost. The bike looked at me and said, "Uh, uh. You're not putting that on me."
Last week I hauled 75 lbs of stoneware clay on the bike. Oh, and the motorcycle trunk is removeable at the press of a button. |

Finally got some pics of my 1985 Raleigh Wyoming. I still need to add fenders. The yellow box holds spare tube, tire levers, locks for bike and box, a couple of wrenches, and a 12v8amh SLA battery that powers the 30w halogen headlight, flashing amber strobe tail light, and 130 dbl 12v car horn. One top compartment also houses the head and tail light switches, right behind the seat. The home made headlight and horn are mounted with one bracket. And a folding basket to hold my backpack or grocery bag on the right side.

Hello, newbie here. Lurking and readings lots, thanks for all the info.
Just want to post pics of my new baby. |
I finally rode to work, so I guess it is officially a commuter. Here is a fuzzy camera-phone pic I took on the way in this morning. I will add some better photos when the company camera becomes available.
I stopped to reflect on how much nicer riding along the lake in the early morning is compared to sitting in a car on Packers Ave. It is a '72 Schwinn Continental. I am planning on changing the bars to moustache or drops soon. http://www.gkinnamon.com/images/schwinn_lake.jpg |
Well, I've been commuting on the new wheels for a week, so I guess I should post her pic:

Woohoo, my Trek 7.3 FX is about 90% done. Next up are some fenders and a new headlamp, but so far...
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/232/4...1ef602e7_b.jpg ..so good :). Just had a new wheel built for the rear, a Sun RhynoLite 32h rim hand-laced cross 3 to a Deore hub. SOOO much better than the stock Bontrager for my big butt :). Oh, and every commuter should have a Brooks. |

Raleigh http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o...llbikes022.jpg Aerowind http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o...llbikes024.jpg Free Spirit http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o...llbikes027.jpg I just bought the last one this weekend for $10. I havent commuted with it to work yet, though it has been to the grocery store once or twice. I just need to find a suitable rear rack or front basket/ rack for it. I'am trying to think of something that would fit the old look (any suggestions?) I hate riding with a backpack!! |
