Lovely Trek 520! I just bought a used 520 myself last week. Still setting it up to my liking. Pics eventually.

I've got a frame/fork with crank and seat post identical to the Free Spirit Mybikegotstolen just posted. If anyone local wants it they can have it free.

My new roadie, which I'm using on the commute this week:

Horrible cellphone pic, I'll try to replace them with better shots when I can.

This is definitely my "nice weather" bike, I don't intend to put much more on it (fenders, etc.).

The reason for the double pics is to illustrate what I call the "Stealth Reflector" concept and the use of Reflective tape on the wheels instead of CSPC plastic reflectors.
Basically the idea behind the "Stealth Reflector" is to use the same color (or reasonably close) tape as the frame so that it blends during the day, yet provides reflective properties at night.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/8...flectordg9.gif

Please keep in mind that reflectors or reflective tape is no substitute for lights and are to be viewed and used as supplements to a lighting system not in place of one.

Trek 930 Commuter

This is my 1996 Trek 930. I bought the bike new. I've used it both on and off road. Currently I'm riding it to work 4 days a week. Photos show the bike in 'summer commute'. I'm going to be putting fenders on soon. It hasn't been raining.

http://userwww.service.emory.edu/%7E...ke/Trek930.JPG

The 930 has held up well. Trek made decent steel frames.

Changes from the original.

Rapid Fire Shifters. I hate Grip Shifts.
Scott AT-2 LF bars. Sadly these are no longer made.
One sided SPD pedals.
Syncros bottom bracket went in when the Shimano one failed after a thousand miles or so.
XT brakes front, LX brakes rear. Bought cheap at Supergo. They do work better than the OE brakes.

http://userwww.service.emory.edu/%7E...2/bike/XTR.JPG

The XTR rear derailleur came off of our tandem. Rapid rise works poorly with the long cable runs on a Tandem. I swapped the STX unit from the Trek with the XTR on the Tandem. Both bikes shift better but I would never have purchased an XTR rear derailleur new.

I've had 3 or 4 sets of wheels. Right now I'm using the original front wheel. The rear is an original rim laced to an old 7-speed LX hub.

Tires are Performance store brand Fast City ST-K's.

http://userwww.service.emory.edu/%7E.../Carradice.JPG

Brooks B-17 and Carradice Junior. It is just large enough to hold pants, shirt, wallet, keys, a few tools. I I had it to do over, I'd get the next size up bag.

I used to have a Blackburn MTN rack and bags. Those are on the Tandem.

Nice bike. I just bought my son a Hardrock Sport and it is a great bike. I was riding it the other day thinking it would make a great commuter (I like the MTB style for commuting) with a rigid fork and bigger chain rings like you have. Hmmm, maybe in a few years when he upgrades I might take it back from him and commuterize it.

The "stealth" car idea with police traffic cars is really nice one that is up and coming. The town I live in has one and this is a pic of Holland PD's "casper" car:

Speaking of "stealth cop cars".... If you ever get to NW Washington, WoodinVille In particular (I think) The cop cars are (or were a decade ago) Maroon Volvo stationwagons, with thin line light bars that blended into the cargo racks... you never saw em' coming....

It's been good to me the last 7 years. The only thing that's stock on it now is the seat post and the steel frame. The chain rings are still a standard for a MTB 44-32-22, but it has a "road" 11-23 in the back.

It's something I was toying with for a couple years, but when I spotted that .gif of the black cop car on Galls.com (also where I got my tape) I knew it would work fine on a bike. I kept the tape in the rear red as FL law demands "Every bicycle in use between sunset and sunrise shall be equipped with a lamp on the front exhibiting a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and a lamp and reflector on the rear each exhibiting a red light visible from a distance of 600 feet to the rear." and I don't want a ticket on a technicality.

I used the same tape technique on my girlfriend's bike. The tape doesn't match the frame color as neatly as it does on mine, but the same effect is provided.

Where might I purchase this miraculous stealthy reflective tape substance!?

devildogmech 05-11-07 01:13 PM

His post said www.galls.com.... That stuff is $25 a roll!

Yes to Galls, but NO my tape wasn't $25 a roll.
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5558/gallsjwg2.jpg
The way I cut it it worked out to 1 roll per bike. So between the two bikes I used
  • 2 rolls of black ( Some was used on my girlfriend's fork and the remainder of the 2nd roll went to add reflective surfaces to the inner trunk lid and the part of the car door where it meets the jamb on my girlfriend's black car)
  • Most of a roll of blue (She has a black fork so that's where the extra came from)
  • A roll of Red split between the two (seat stays)
  • 2 rolls of Silver / white (wheels)

I haven't used this for grocery shopping yet, but it's great for hauling wood around the yard and bringing bikes home. And christmas trees too!!
I threw in a pic of my fiancee's bike too. I guess it qualifies as a commuter since she rides with me to staff meetings. It's a used MTB I picked up. I put North Road bars from a Schwinn Suburban on it and added the Fisher Price horn and handlebar mounted bottle cage. I think it may need different brake levers since she has small hands, but it's much better than her old Huffy that was too small.

MyBikeGotStolen 05-12-07 06:04 PM

I love the cart stoker! I have been wanting to build one of these

Be sure to remove any identifying logos or colors from that car lest you be charged with theft.

That looks cool, but it also looks quite unstable

It actually doesn't have any, but I don't think I can be charged for taking a cart with 2 wheels broken off from a dumpster

JeffB502 05-13-07 12:17 AM

I love the shopping cart idea Stoker. I think something like that would be perfect for me. Have you made a separate thread or mentioned it in a trailer specific thread yet? (I'm still fairly new here)

Oh yeah....might as well post some pics of my bike while I'm here. Just got them uploaded today.

At some point I might have posted a pic of it hooked up to my old trek with a Chritstmas tree in it. I think it was in a thread about Christmas lights
