There are a few bikes in my budget ($300-600 CAD) that I've been looking at if I decide to get a decent commuter. I know a little bit more about what I need now, so I'll be looking for those features and qualities. :)
abbynemmy: that bike looks fast. |

Kona makes one or two that fit your price range. The Smoke 29er is around $370 CAD and comes w/ fenders. You should be able to find them in most LBS' since they're a Canadian company. There's several other companies that'd fit your budget like Schwinn, etc. so shop around.
abbynemmy: that bike looks fast. Here's where I debate to myself whether I need a new bike or not: http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=395436 Also the more I think about it, the more longer leisure day trips are beginning to be appealing to me so I'm really thinking of either getting a bike to do that and commute or gearing my mtb up for it. |
Hi. First-timer in this forum. But any excuse to show my new bike :). It will be used as a commuter for my new job, only 13 miles round trip. More pictures can be seen here, http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/v/...pado+Commuter/

Today was a good day to commute (at least it was for me, I hope others too). Here's my Truk 1100 (Trek ;) ):
http://home.comcast.net/%7Encherry/o.../Image0004.jpg And here it is with the trailer: http://home.comcast.net/%7Encherry/o...Image0005a.jpg Sorry about the size and the glare, I'm not so good with the camera (it's a phone). |
Pics of my Giro 26 during it's first cruise around with my wife yesterday. Today I braved the super dense fog with it for my commute to work with it. Only have 80 miles on it so far but already have no problems starting/stopping/turning even on hills. It is definately high though I'm 6'3" and I can't flat foot it at stops while reclined or I feel like my hamstring is going to snap.

Wow! I'd commute in plus twos, a vest and tie just because I was on this bike! Very nice! |

My commuter bike for about a year now.
http://edit.81x.com/Authors/Jabberwocky/CIMG3598.JPG To steal it, you'd have to go into my office, walk past the security guard I say hi to every morning, take the elevator to the 20 something floor, defeat the electronic lock to the floor, find my desk, grab my bike from under my desk, and walk out without any of my coworkers seeing you. Then figure out how to unfold it when you get outside. =) http://edit.81x.com/Authors/Jabberwocky/CIMG3600.JPG |
nice bike - the wonders of a folder huh.

Nice! I have a Specialized P2 (free from a buddy) and I've been trying to figure out if I can fit a rack and fenders on it. I'm a noob at these things, so I either have to go to my LBS and pay for someone else to tell me these things or learn to do it myself, which is preferable. This was helpful because I haven't seen a lot online about retrofitting a Specialized to become a commuter. It gives me hope. :) Thanks!
Thanks!! the P2 is going to be tough to outfit as a commuter because of the geometry. You will probably need an uber long seat tube to accomodate. A good bet would be to search out a newer frame and swap all your P2 stuff over to that one. Or a newer hardrock can be picked up for around 400 now I believe. |

This is the bike I ride pretty much 95% of the time, though I find the gearing is too low... I want to go much faster.

I'm kind of new here. My commute is about 11 miles each way on rolling hills (about 1000 feet in climbing each way). I have attached a pic of my rig, let me know what you think! It's a Surly Cross Check 58cm with Ultegra front and rear dérailleurs and 105 STI shifters with a 105 12-25 freewheel. It has Jandd Mini Mountain Panniers, Planet bike fenders, two rear blinkers, FSA cranks and Mavic aksium wheel set with 700cx35 tires. I hope to get a black brooks saddle soon and maybe some new pedals.

A local newspaper is doing a column on my commuting, and they have pictures online, here:
http://post-trib.mycapture.com/mycap...istSubAlbums=0 BTW, I am planning on getting a reflective safety vast, though I am running Dinotte lights in the front and rear. I've been waiting forever for the column to get published. Maybe the paper's management decided not to run it out of fear of losing car dealership sponsors. |
