That's the main difference I found between my wool gear and UA-type gear. With my wool zip shirts, I don't need to wash them after each use, even when I wear them for running. With my UA shirts, I have to wash them after every run.

Wool is great because it insulates and wicks. I also ride with a thin poly-pro REI base layer. It with a widproof jacket will keep warm down into the 20's (as cold as it gets here in sunny NM). I love warm base layers.

UA coldgear acts too much like a sponge and holds the moisture. In an hour commute with 1500 ft of climbing I get a good test of equipment. UA coldgear has me arriving at work with the base layer much more moist than UA heatgear.
If it works for you, great. But its not what I would recommend to others.

Just a little reminder to read and follow the washing instructions on the label. NEVER use fabric softener with your base layer.

Cashmere is an ultrafine wool from goats. It's got good insulating properties, but I'm not sure about when it's soaking wet.
Merino wool (from the Merino sheep) is a soft-handed wool with naturally crimped fibers which add to its insulating properties.

Cashmere is regarded as having *better* insulating properties than Sheep's wool.

GoodWill mostly. Some thrift stores. My "expensive" clothes usually come from Wal-Mart.
Oh, well then by all means.
Commuting angels are cool. I have a couple, too.

Best combination of temperature regulation (cool to cold conditions) and wicking. Quality merino wool. Not inexpensive, but you can sometimes find them on sale across the Interwebs:

I too have some base layers from Under Armour. I don't know specifically which model of cold weather gear it is, but it's really thin, and has an almost unbelievable level of insulation. I have both upper and lower pieces, resulting in a full body cover; ultramegawarm.
In the weather the past few days (<0 degrees) it was no big deal. Pretty much the best piece of bike gear I've ever owned. Seriously.

UA is pretty much a marketing company that sells clothing. I agree--- any company that makes base clothing for skiers is the way to go. I commute year round- in all weather- and have tried a bunch of cheap alternatives, like UA--- and I always go back to the classics.
