As long as you like it. That's all that matters. To me, they look almost identical.

At least temporarily, I went from this 1994 Nishiki Sport XRS

to this 1983 Raleigh Marathon

The Nishiki has defective Shimano cranks; eventually they will be replaced under recall and the Nishiki will again be my commuter. In the meantime I've enjoyed getting to know the Marathon.

Bikes: Trek 520, Specialized Enduro, 70's SS conversion town bike, 80's mtb internal hub internal drum brake winter bike, fixed karate monkey

This is my second season of full out winter commuting. 1st season I tried it out with a mega-junker with fenders and studded tires (1 tire cost more than the bike...), 2nd season I custom built a sweet and funtional ride almost entirely out of old mtb parts sitting around and a new IGH. The difference is ridiculous, and this new bike is still 30lbs... Since the pics, I've added a chainguard, cleaner fender mounts, big mudflaps, a much better seat, a smaller chainring, and 26x2.0 330 spike front tire for the big days, tons of stealth white reflector tape, and finally the brake booster is where it belongs up front, balancing out the purple bling feng shui...
When this wears out eventually, I'll be riding a surly KM, 5spd internal hub, 2 canti brakes, 29er nokian 294 studded tires.

Kinda hard to see that in a picture. Doesn't matter what people say on here, if you like it, awesome.

I thought it was real clear in the pics. Those old MTBs are nice riding commuters, especially for somebody who rides a little rough. That one looks nice and clean too.

Thanks ! ROODY,i also have a Marin road bike, and when i came across the Marin mtb.i had to have it, and the price was cheap,i got more in the tires than the bike, then i added my $4 garage sale rear rack, and I have a very dependable/cheap commuter bike for around $150 including my JANDD trunk.!!!!

I have a Marin Bolinas Ridge as well! It is not my commuter though. It came with shocks and I do not like shocks on the road so I just use it for Mtn. Biking.

Eight bucks at Goodwill. I've replaced the BB and chain, added a Blackburn Mt. rack and riser bars. The rear axle's giving me fits, though-keeps coming loose. Time for another rebuild...

Exactly! There's no challenge to riding a new, high-tech bike that won't fall apart in the middle of an intersection. BO-RING!!

In the summer time I commute on a 2008 Giant TranSend DX:

In the winter I use an early 90's (something like 91/92ish) GT Talera.
