Here's hoping for nice weather in NYC...

I'm admittedly a casual helmet wearer, especially if I know I'll just be noodling about on my hybrid.

However two things came together last fall in my favor:
1) I mount a blinkie on my helmet so I tend to always wear it when commuting.
2) I ride hard and fast when commuting

So I was really lucky that the one time I actually needed a helmet in a brutal 20mph high side flip I was actually wearing the thing. I broke it, and was impressed enough to buy another.

I still don't always wear it when out on a casual slow ride though.

Ever since I got a helmet I liked, I haven't taken a ride without it.

I have never worn a helmet on my bike or motorcycle.
If I am to die riding, then so be it.
I will enjoy life while I am here.

Any of you no-helmet-wearin' fools wrecked without a helmet? How'd that work out for ya? Based on some of the comments I've seen, the answers would be "yes" and "not well."

Yes, over my 40+ years of riding I have, and they didn't turn out any differently without a helmet than they would have with...including my endo head first into a motor home.

Got any other observations to showcase how a helmet obviously DIDN'T protect that lil punkin head of yourn from whatever caused your mental infirmity?

Good for you , but that doesn't mean it's just as safe without one as with. They might not always help, but they certainly won't hurt. But your skull seems to be a little thicker than most, so you may be the exception.

Not exactly...makes no difference to me if you wear one or not. In fact, I'm all for being able to choose and not be told (you're a big boy, you can decide on your own), but for myself, I'd rather not risk it.

Yeah well, back in my youth, I was also a motorcyclist at about the time helmets for that were becoming mandatory. Sure, I preferred the feeling of riding naked up there, but there comes a point when it doesn't make sense not to take advantage of the protection that is available. That point comes when the protection becomes practical to use. We've been past that point in the world of cycling for a couple of decades now.

In the various helmet threads you always have:

The folks that point out someone who died because they weren't wearing a helmet.

Folks who claim they would hve been dead several times if they didn't wear a helmet.

Some who feel compelled to weigh in and tell us we are beating a dead horse.

A lot of +1s

And some guy who has to tell you what you'll find in the various helmet threads.

From my personal experience I can say "yes" and "not well" when I wrecked without one, and "yes" and "a whole lot better" when I wrecked in virtually the same manner, some years later, and had one on.

This thread gave some stats on which activities have the highest risk of brain injury:

https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/521653-traumatic-brain-injury-stats.html

The National Institutes of Health lists the following as leading causes of TBI in those under age 75:

* Transportation accidents: 50 percent
* Violence: 20 percent
* Sports injuries: 3 percent

I leave for a few hours and you all are back to jabbering about helmets? I thought this thread was about tight skirts and heels... and KitN's fashion sense?

Oh well, go with the flow, I suppose. When I was hit by a car while riding my bike I did bump my head. Thankfully I was wearing a baseball cap, which most certainly saved my life.

Not heels.. Stiletto heels! (useless "internet" fact)
"What exerts more pressure-per-square inch when walking a 100 lb woman in high heels or a 6,000 lb elephant in bare feet? [At the moment when only the heel rests on the ground.] Ask teams to tackle this challenge. (Stiletto heels have an area of about 1/16 of a square inch. Elephants, unlike humans, walk with two feet on the ground at a time. Each foot is about 40 square inches. Thus, the woman "wins" by far more than 1,500 psi versus 75 psi.)"
Hm perhaps the heels need a helmet

All this talk reminds me of Absinthe and Milk and Honey *shrug*

My biggest fear of not wearing a helmet is people not shutting up about it. I guess it could come in handy if I need to headbutt someone or some drivers side window intentionally.

Read my sig line, Mr. Texican safety nanny. But since you must not have between them ears to begin with, I can see why you would take all the safety precautions you can. I do hope you wear a helmet at all times...lord knows you should.
