+1 to the 1xN drive train.
My first was a 1x5 1970 Schwinn Suburban- cassette was 14-32 with 39 chain ring. I think the 39 t was not standard.
More recently have ridden lots of km with a 1x9 CrossCheck with 34 t chain ring and 11-34 cassette.
Use a Dog fang on the inside and Salsa ringdinger on outside; cannot recall the last time I dropped a chain. The set up works great. My chain line is pretty good with the chain ring about in the middle of the cassette. Do experience more chain wear than in other bikes, not sure if it is because it gets ridden the most especially bad road conditions or not being very careful about maintenance or just a downside to the 1x9 set up. Do replace the chain about every 1000 km, a small expense for the pragmatic set up.

Bikes: 2003 Trek 520, 1996 Trek 370, 1996 Bianchi Osprey, too many others.

Why not consider an internal hub?

One of my bikes is a Nexus 8 IGH. Needless to say I have no issues with it throwing the chain. Overall range of 305% is comparable to a 1 x 9.

That being said, I prefer the 3 x 9 105/LX setup on my Trek 520. On most rides I wind up using all 3 chainrings.

I recently converted one of my steel bikes into a fixed/single-speed. Not sure if I will like the SS as it is pretty hilly where I live, but I'm going to give it a shot. However, if don't like it, my plan is to convert it to a 1x9. When I did the SS conversion, I removed the outer chainring and replaced the inner ring with a 42 T. The 42 ring seems like it would provide a nice range of gears coupled with a 12-27 cassette.

I have been considering an IGH. I want a drivetrain that's simple and easy to keep clean.

I might not ever convert a 2x9 into a 1x9. If I could just yank off the front der. and hit the road I would do it.

Unfortunately it seems like I need to add 2-3 special parts to compensate for the missing F.D.

That's not my idea of simplification...I might make sense on a new build or rebuild.

EDIT: Metricoclock seems to have pulled it off without any special gadgets.

Not Easy, I remove the outer guard. With that removed its just like any chainring.

Timely thread for me. I'm getting ready to (re)build my Redline as a 1x8. Nice to hear again that so many people like the 1x setup.

I'm going to start with a 50t ring and an 11-30 cassette and see how that works around here...

I run a 1x9 on my Xtracycle. Works great except for the most extreme hills. But as Sawtooth said, Boise is relatively flat. I am planning 80 mile rail to trail trip this spring and may add the lower ring in case of hills.
The front chainring is a 38t. I now have a bashguard on the outside and run the chainring in the middle position.
