District is an overpriced hipster POS.

The belt Soho, for the same price:

8-speed internal hub.

Nah. I'd take either.

It has to be the best looking bike that ive seen. I think you either love it or hate it.

I would of course put a brooks sadle and bag on it.
I hate it. What a fugly looking thing. "gee, let's get a bike and paint it primer and puke"

yech. Photo of that thing actually gave me a visceral reaction.

I have to agree. While I like the concept the visual execution sucks. Besides, what excuse will the hipsters have then to roll up their pants leg?

I really like the idea of a belt drive. Once they're in the real world I'm looking forward to test driving the Soho and District. The district seems like a faster bike, carbon fork, lightweight brakes narrower tires. I've never had a single speed and for the same price it would be difficult to pass up a hub

Considering buying a Trek District

After visiting my LBS today and seeing the Trek District on prominent display, I searched these forums and found this thread. Sooo, sorry to bring up a fairly old conversation, but figured it was better than starting up a new thread that has already been covered. I am seriously considering purchasing a District as my commuter. I am currently riding a Motobecane Record road bike that I picked up used on craigslist last year. It's a fine bike, but not the road bike riding position and thin tires are just not conducive for the commute. Anyone else riding the District? If so, what are your thoughts? I am not a hipster, just find the simplicity of single speed appealing, and I love the look of this bike! Thanks all.

Because it's a single speed, I originally thought it was for relatively level riding only. The gear ratio is so good though, that I have no problems climbing up hills. It's just a fun, well thought out bike. Hop on it and ride.

In addition, it's a bargain among the mainstream belt drive bikes that are out there (Globe, Spot). I can't recommend it highly enough-- in fact, this bike has single handedly gotten me back into biking. It's an excellent, lightweight commuter. I stuck the factory saddle on my road bike, and put a Brooks B-17 Special on it. The factory saddle actually works really well on my road bike, so if you're on a budget, you could just leave it on. The brakes are mediocre. Not bad, but I'll probably swap them out later. I bought mine brand spankin' new from the LBS for $650 due to it being a 2010 model. I probably wouldn't pay retail ($1100), but around $900 is where I think it should be. Love the carbon fork/aluminum frame combo and the fatter tires. I swapped the pedals out for hybrids.

Bikes: To many to list...

There is one the local bike flippers (great guy does good work and reasonable prices) that has a 2009 for sale and he hasn't had any takers for over a month. It looks like he is down to $550 now taking offers. It looks like a sweet bike, but I doubt I would really end up keeping it. Its tempting though espcially if he would take the right trade which I suppose he might.
