I just bought a horn

How effective are these things on people? None of them really sound like car horns so I'm curious if they get much attention. I had too many close encounters today and I was pushed over the edge. I can't seem to scream loud enough at people opening their doors( I take the lane but I want these people to be more aware ) and I want to make more of an impression on drivers that cut me off or buzz me.

Depends on which horn you bought. Is it an Airzounds?

Then you'll be okay. Arizounds is like a slightly higher pitched truck horn. It'll get people's attention: cars, peds, other bikers, etc. People think you are a truck when they 1st hear it so they definitely look.

Is there any cheaper alternative?

$25 for something I'll use solely for the purpose of retaliatory honking seems a bit much. (In real emergency situations, I'll likely be way too busy maneuvering/braking to honk)

Well it seems yelling out "DOOR!" to someone about to open their door without looking doesn't do anything because they still open their door. I think I was just venting about the retaliatory honking.

I was just pointing out that if someone really opened a door in my path, my attention would be focused on stopping (I'd likely yell "HEY" as a natural reaction, as opposed to a conscious effort).

Being that I ride in a mostly rural area at night, I got my airzounds horn to startle animals that might turn up in front of me.
Blessings,
John

Maybe mount the airzounds trigger up against your front brake lever so when you yank it in an emegency stop it also sounds the horn automatically?

In my experience, if I yell loudly at a door opener, their reaction is to pull back into the car. My riding mantra though is treat every parked car, like a gun, and assume it is "loaded" and ready to open up, right or left side. So I ride as wide away as possible.

I bought a scooter horn so that drivers recognise the sound. When I get some time I'm going to build it up

I don't ride in the door zone, so I don't worry too much about being doored. But there are still people swing their doors open without looking and I want to give those people a nice toot so they don't do it again because there are still some people that don't take the lane and are at risk.

The Airzound is a one-time investment. I top off the pressure each time I top off the tires (usually once a week). Nothing to replace other than a bit of free air. I've had it a couple of weeks and it has helped me a couple of times already. It weighs next to nothing and the operating cost is $0.

I got a bell last fall and so far it has been 100% effective on pedestrians and slower cyclists. It's useless against people inside cars. An air horn is the way to go if you want to assert yourself on drivers.

I get about 200 short blasts from one.
I now have two of the Blue ones.
The Red tip one lasted 5 months.

Thanks. Haven't have a dog chasing me for a while. I should armed myself with one, just in case. I have more problem with motorists than animals.
