Warm and humid, at least for around here (17C/88%). Probably would seem cool and dry to some of you.

Get well soon, Absenth!
Uneventful ride in this AM. After work, I'm heading to Arlington Cinema and Draft House to catch (hopefully) Chasing Legends (the pro cycling documentary currently touring the country before a wider release from what I understand). Online tickets were sold out by the time I went to order yesterday, so I'm hoping they'll have enough left at the door that I can ge tmy hands on one. If not, then I'll just go for a nice long bike ride instead, so it's really not so bad either way. :thumb: |

Do you check your tire and wheel for sharp things before putting the tube in, or are you just having bad luck with different punctures?
I had the innards of a presta valve shoot out of the stem once after I fixed a flat. That was not my day. |
52F, grey. Really fast ride today.

Yesterday on the ride home I took an alternate long route. It ended up having a pretty steep hill compared to the more-southward road I normally take in that part of town (Midvale). There also were no shoulders, crappy-or-nonextant sidewalks, and lots of cars, so I don't think I'll be taking that route again.
I got a late start this morning, and so it was hotter than usual, with the ramification that I was a little sweatier than usual getting in to work. Rinsed my face off in the bathroom, but there are no showers or anything here. Luckily I don't sit close to anyone in my office :). I've got another alternate long route planned for this evening (trying to increase my daily bicycle mileage), comprising parts of my normal route and parts of routes that I take for recreational rides, so I'm familiar with them and looking forward to a pleasant ride in this evening. |
Thanks everyone for wishing me a speedy recovery.
Dr. tells me I need to stay off the leg for 2-4 weeks using crutches. And I shouldn't get on the bike until mid September. He said at that I should be taking it easy on the bike through August. Looks like the Hilly Hundred is out. I don't stand a chance of completing that in early October now. |
Sorry to hear about your accident!
Forget the race, I'm wondering if you'll still make your mileage goal this year. Did you leave out the "least" in "he said at least that I should...."? My commute was wonderful this morning. Nice and rainy :P |
Real fun ride home. I did a little single track riding, and there was a gnarly headwind but it didn't bother me much. I noticed something was shadowing me far behind, but not getting any closer. I got to a high traffic location and slowed up, following a couple. The woman was... easy to ride behind.
:innocent: The thing I saw behind me pulled up behind us. A bona fide roadie! I let him pass, and weave through some traffic, then I let things clear up and gave chase. Jeez he was fast. I caught him but he made me breathe hard. Jerk! We climbed a short hill and I hung with him. He had pretty meaty legs, but so do I. :p He checked his mirror, signaled a left turn, and we split up. Sometimes I think I need a bike that doesn't weigh 35 pounds. |
The town is repaving a section of road that has needed it for the last several years. On the way to work, they were grinding off the old asphalt and had cones set up to designate "lanes." I took the lane where normally I wouldn't have and kept up with traffic, so all was cool. Love the sound of gravel and small stones that my tires pick up zing through the fenders before getting kicked out in front of me. On the way home the removal of the old surface had been completed, but the new roadway has not yet been laid down, so all the cars were kicking up dust something fierce. Seemed like riding though a brown fog... pretty nasty. Despite riding with my mouth closed, I still got grit in my teeth and dust in my eyes. None the less, the sunset was enjoyable, some great colors this evening.

But today's ride, for a change, was quite comfortable. Only getting to 85 this afternoon so should be a nice ride home as well! |
Terrific riding weather. High 50s. Calm wind. I was getting on the MUP and a rider going the other way yelled, "Hi Jim!", which startled me. :D It was a co-worker. Guess he left something at home. I also saw bmike from these forums. First time in a while!
I caught up to a trail regular. Younger guy on a mountain bike. Rode behind him the rest of the way in. 14-16MPH. After work my wife is riding in, we're going to have a couple of beers, some food, and ride home together. |
I think it was 62 when I rode past Southport high school. Absolutely perfect.

Took a detour on the way home to catch Chasing Legendswith a friend. Very good documentary if you have any interest, even remote, in pro cycling and the Tour de France. Highly recommended.
The theatre is on top of a hill (relative to my office and my apartment), so the ride after the movie was fun. A sustained 25 mph for a couple minutes w/o pedalling! Flat from there... Nice ride in this AM and the weather is cooler and drier, too, which should make for very nice weather up in the Shenandoah this weekend when I'm camping. If it's gonna be cooler and drier down here, it should be REAL nice at 3500 feet. Looking fwd to the three day weekend! |
Skeeters are bad all of the sudden. Thought I was going to have a nice little race up a hill with another guy on a road bike, but no, I'm still the king of the mountain.

52F, misty
spent the 1st part of the ride arguing weather w/ my 9 yr old. He thought it was sprinkling, I think of that as wetter than mist. We pretty much agreed it wasn't fog. |

The ride in was nice today. I took what is becoming my new regular route (eight miles one-way with less traffic, more enjoyable and more mileage). Saw two bicyclists, what looked like a father and son on mountain bikes with city tires. Waved and said hey before leaving them in the dust :).

Brilliant morning with clean clear air, low 70s temp and not significant humidity to speak of. A couple roadies passed me going in the opposite direction, not riding together, just going the same way. Had a chain get caught between chainrings at a stoplight, so I had to do the shuffle to the side of the road and extract the chain. All in all more good than bad, looking forward to the ride home, might take the long way...
|
I had a later ride in this morning and the traffic on my short route is really annoying. I'll have to look into some better tires so I can go up the gravel MUP on the north side of the mountain on these days. Today will be a nice easy ride home on my long route as traffic will be crazy on the Friday before a long weekend.

well i worked a double yesterday went in at normal time of 6am got off at 11pm so i was tired to say the least downtown boise was packed with people, all drunk, so my total for last night was two pedestrians hit and a stop light pole that jumped in front of me boooooo

This was my first week commuting from my house to gym which is 8 mile round trip (3x's), before I start the commute to work which is 14 miles round trip. I'm getting better about gearing and only cross chained once, but quickly noticed what was going on and corrected. I haven't had anybody yell at me from their car when passing, but I've had several cars redline the motor when passing. According to bike computer my average speed is 10mph, which sounds right since it takes me 20 minutes to go 4 miles to gym. I've always thought to have been in good shape and never had problem when weight lifting, but these short rides have killed my quads.
I've really enjoyed reading the forums on this site and have learned alot, and have quickly confused myself reading about cadence...lol. |
A pleasant ride in, and there were one cyclist lit up going in the opposite direction and 2 joggers in the dark at 5:20 or so. With the clouds today the morning darkness had a feel of October. By the middle of this month, any remnants of light going back to the summer solstice will be gone at 5:10am.

This morning's ride was pleasant with temps in the mid-60s. I was running a few minutes late, so I pushed myself--which on a 40lb bike takes some doing. I got buzzed by one person, but other than that it was an uneventful ride. |
A little bit humid this morning. High 60sF. Headwind. It's one of those Mondays that I had to force myself into. Someone send me 10 billion dollars so I never have to wake up before I want to. Thanks in advance. :p

Just got back after a week of vacation, and I definitely noticed a tad less daylight when I left for work this morning. It was cooler (69 F) than it was during any commute during the month of July here. We came within one day of setting a record for the hottest July but an unseasonably cool day on Saturday blew it. What a shame to suffer through such a miserable July and have it turn out to be only the second-hottest on record. The cool temps made for a great ride on Saturday, though, and I was climbing better than I had in weeks.

54F, foggy.
My son may have broken his coccyx, he had an alarming bruise centered right there last night after a freak playground slide accident, but he biked in too. It is above his sitbones, I suppose. |
Well, the commuting gods punished me this morning... I woke up a bit late and since I have to bring some training materials home that I can't carry on the bike, I figured I'd drive. On the way I drove through Del Taco to get a quick bite. While waiting a while, I shut the car off... no sense idling for 5 minutes. When I went to start it back up, the friggin' battery was dead! I finally got it started and made it to work. Just one more reason to ride the bike and not take the car...
