A little warmer this morning 48f, and almost scary dead, i only saw one car and no ped. out this morning, must have been because there was a bsu game and everybodys hung over.

EKW in DC 10-09-10 09:59 AM

Great ride in this morning, despite the fact that I had to wake up at 6 AM on a Saturday not of my own volition. :D Managed to actaully see the sun rise on the Potomac as I rode in to work. More accurately, I managed to watch the sun rise three times on the Potomac as I rode in (thanks to hills/changing horizon on the other side of the river, I saw it pop over the horizon on three separate occasions). Temp in the low 50s. Very nice.

My short day at work is over, and I'm about to bike over to meet up with my wife and a friend for an afternoon cookout and some bocce ball, and then hopefully a little more riding... :)

Fizzaly 10-10-10 08:22 AM

Nice morning 52f, my knee wasn't bothering me this morning either. I really like fall weather here in boise so nice to have highs in the mid 60's.

xtnpd 10-11-10 04:51 AM

Mid 50s, fog, and dead quiet. I couldn't tell if my ears were numb, I couldn't hear anything, or it was just that silent this morning. That was, at least, until the Monday morning garbage truck race started. It wasn't quiet any longer.

A great ride. I noticed leaves starting to pile up on the new bike trail. Fall is here.

Daren71 10-11-10 07:56 AM

I bought a new Cannondale CAAD9 5 and had to try it out. Friday around here was nice, just a little windy, but coming home from work on Sat. night, it was my first ride in cold weather. It was 9c or 48F. I had on leg warmers, and a cheap rain/windbreaker, and full gloves, and all was fine. I thought for sure I would be cold by the time I got home, but nope, very comfortable.

It was very foggy today. I had a decent ride with the new Nishiki, but it wasn't perfect. Got chased by a full-grown pit bull (first time that's happened) and took a longer route, which meant I missed making it in the back gate before 7:00, and had to ride my bike through a field to get to the front gate. Overall, not bad, but if I spot that dog out next time, I'm not going to be happy...

genel 10-11-10 09:28 AM

Another fine day, and very light traffic thanks to Columbus.

Passed 5000 miles for the year. Includes commuting plus weekends.

abracapocus 10-11-10 09:57 AM

Loved that schools were out today. I pass by several on the way so the traffic was much lighter. It's warmer this week, just shy of 60 F when I left and going up to mid 80s F during the day. Back to wearing shorts on the way in and doing the full change. Every week something keeps my from getting in a no car to work week. This week I have a package at a FedEx facility that I have to go pick up. Naturally it's only open 8-4pm so I've got no way to do it by bike.

groovestew 10-11-10 11:54 AM

I'm currently in the process of starving myself before totally stuffing myself on turkey this afternoon. No commute today, but I already made up for my missed Friday and today by doing 2 days worth of commuting on an eyeballs-out hammerfest yesterday.

mejaime 10-11-10 03:13 PM

Good commute this morning the temperature is fine (12.2 °C) a lots of traffic but my bike fly over the cars.
The go home is more relax about 30 minutes to ride 7km.

caloso 10-11-10 03:17 PM

Rode the kids to school again today. We took the more direct route that requires us to go over a 6% grade RR overpass. My daughter has a little 16" single-speed bike and a backpack. She's done it before, but never on a school day, and this morning she said that she thought she was ready to try it. When we got to the top I told her what a great job she did and she said it's hard but it's worth it because she loves to coast on the way down.

That's my girl!

Grim 10-11-10 06:59 PM

crazy weather! I had a ton of stuff going on last week and could only commute Monday and Tuesday.
Ride in was stil warm enough that I rode in with a short sleeve shirt. Still trying to hold out on the better lighting but it is just too dark now at 6:45am. Charging my headlight tonight for the ride in. :(

Ride home was nice 84f at 5:45pm .

gbcb 10-11-10 08:06 PM

Last two commutes have sucked. Rack failed on the way home yesterday, falling off the back of the bike and dumping my pannier (with laptop) in the middle of a busy street. And today, realised I had a slow leak on the way in -- but have lost my portable pump.

On the up side, my Ortlieb Office Bag looks no worse after falling off my bike and being dragged along the asphalt for a couple of meters. And my laptop seems OK, though I made sure to back up my files last night.

zacster 10-11-10 08:58 PM

A completely different commute today, and no bikes involved. I started out in Davis Park, Fire Island, NY and walked 4 miles to the Fire Island Pines at 6am because there is no ferry from Davis Park back to the mainland at that time. The Pines ferry left at 7:25. Fire Island, for those that do not know, is a barrier beach on the south shore of Long Island that is about 30 miles long and nothing but sand. There are no cars, nor bikes, and it is very quiet, except when the bands start playing at the pubs. There are houses, (and its good to have friends with a beach house), and not much else to do but sit at the beach, eat and drink.

I arrived at the Pines at about 7:10 for a 7:25 ferry. I then took the LIRR to Hunterspoint Ave in Queens and the subway to Manhattan. I walked along "Burma Road" which takes you from Davis Park out to a small group of houses called Water Island, then walked on the beach to the Pines. At The Pines, I stayed on the boardwalk as my legs were pretty much shot at that point from the sand. I forgot how 'gay' the Pines are. You forget what 'normal' is when you're there. I'm completely straight but it is interesting to observe. (Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

All in all, a good day of exercise but no riding involved. To keep it on topic, I used my Planet Bike headlight as a flashlight. It was bright on Burma Road but I still couldn't see off to the sides.

fletchh 10-12-10 04:36 AM

A warm day today, so back to the short sleeves and no jacket at 59 F ( 15 C). This is my first day back since last thursday. I remember going out into the bright sunshine and a mild breeze on my last day of work before a 4 day weekend, and there it was, a flat tire. I had just replaced that tube the week
before, so I pumped it up and got about a mile, before I had to deal with it. Appar the beer bottle neck that caught my back tire two weeks ago, slit the tire as well, so over the week the hole got bigger and pinched a hole in my tube. I had an extra tube, so I made it home without any mishaps. Picked up a new tire before I went on my camping trip. It says puncture resistant, so we shall see how it does on the highway bridge of broken glass.

vtjim 10-12-10 06:18 AM

A tad chilly. Temps in the upper 30s/low 40s. Sun just coming up. The Adirondacks are pretty this time of year. I wore my nylon jacket, but still just shorts on the legs. I get hot easily. As it was, I unzipped the jacket after a couple of miles.

I felt slow. I had a huge Brazilian feast (lots of spicy salty bbq meat) last night and I guess I'm not properly wired for a tidal wave of animal flesh. :p Still, one roadie came out behind me but didn't keep up, and I caught another guy on an older tourer doing 16MPH so I just followed him. We passed a woman riding a sweet red cruiser with white flowers painted on the frame.

Doohickie 10-12-10 06:52 AM

It's getting "cold" here in the morning- temp was about 60- and already the bike commuters are thinning out. I one other rider in 17 miles; that was it.

vtjim: "Temps in the upper 30s/low 40s. I wore my nylon jacket, but still just shorts on the legs." You, sir, are a true yankee.

Chalupa102 10-12-10 07:04 AM

Good ride in this morning at 48F and party cloudy with no wind. I'm back on the recumbent today. I was able to get the wheel problem taken care of this weekend. It's almost like I had to get used to it again this morning because I've been off it for about 2 weeks.

Fizzaly 10-12-10 08:43 AM

chilly chily just got back from riding with my son to his school 31f, and his favorite speed to ride is about 4mph, so slow and cold. Im not ready cold weather yet someone turn the heat back on.

daijoubu2k8 10-12-10 08:45 AM

Short quick trip in the dark. It's about 10C/52F this morning for the ride in the dark. I had thanksgiving dinner with my family last night and ate really well. With the tank full and a long weekend, I felt really strong for the climb up Burnaby Mountain this morning. I didn't feel like stopping when I got to the top, but alas, I have to pay the bills.

I'm amazed that people stop commuting by bike when it's 60- in my mind, the 60s are almost the perfect temperature for bike commuting. I can handle it in the mid 90s with high humidity and below freezing (as long as it isn't snowy on the roads), but 60 seems almost ideal to me. It was in the mid 50s here this morning, so I wore bike shorts and a sleeveless running t-shirt- and I was definitely completely comfortable.

That made me laugh. There's a good chance we (my wife, our baby who is due in April, plus our greyhound and our cat) will be moving to Houston in June or July. I'm more worried about learning to deal with the heat in the summer than dealing with the cold here in the winter. It's easy to add more layers, but common decency requires that I only take off so many.

I'm going to guess then that you work at SFU?

Hah. Yeah, there's only so many layers!

South Texas heat can be tough. I grew up in both Houston and the Texas countryside a little north of there. It's hot, especially July, August & early Sept, but the winters are fabulous for outdoor exercise. I'd assume the temp change to the 100+ temps would be somewhat like my experience living in the Marianas Islands for a couple of years. The first two months are obscenely hot, especially with little to no power thanks to typhoons, and then ya just get used to it. Drink obscene amounts of water and it helps, up here in Ohio I don't have to hydrate like Texas or the islands.

groovestew 10-12-10 09:24 AM

5C/41F, sunny and calm. Noticeably chillier in the valley this morning. I managed to contract a cold from somewhere, so my snot-rocket count was up a bit. Otherwise uneventful.

bored117 10-12-10 09:27 AM

Nice cool dark morning ride down the hill in the morning (14 miles). Got on train station a little too early (forgot H2O and went a little faster so I can buy it from vending machine)... nice train ride to work. Not so nice ride to work from station (2 miles). Some less then sensible person just had to park their car on bike lane going up the ramp. It jutted out about half on to the lane and I had to wait for 8 cars/buses to pass us by and I had to pass him on his left as he decided to just get rolling. I actually wish there was police officer there today... I've seen people getting tickets for stopping their car before right on the spot. Their time shall come.

On the campus yes. A wonderful place to work and great for hill work, but terribly hard to convince co-workers to try bike commuting...

No gloves, either. :D

Perfect morning here in DC, dry, no head wind at all, and about 60-ish I think. A wee bit sore getting on my bike after the humbling Chicago Marathon experience!

puppypilgrim 10-12-10 12:18 PM

Agree that 60s is perfect riding weather. Probably 53F this morning, stopped to pump the tires at a gas station. nice ride in. Only saw one car run a 3-way stop sign intersection which is pretty good for a 20 km ride.

Sixty Fiver 10-12-10 12:32 PM

Gorgeous morning here... the commute to my shop is only about 30 steps (on a good day) but had to make a house call and got out for a nice ride and got to test the new brake set up on my winter bike which got transformed from a fixed gear to a 3 speed yesterday.

Hub is smooth but cranky about shifting into first... at 45 years old it is just like me in that it moves but sometimes complains a little.

:)
