I love when that happens. It's such an amazingly peaceful calm silence.

This morning, I had a headwind, so I wasn't getting any of the calm, quiet. Pulled out the underlayer tights for the first time this year and wore them under a pair of cargo shorts. Temps were in the upper 30s for the ride. Have to run some errands on the way home that will take me off my regularly beaten path and add a few miles to the ride, so I'm excited about that. Should be a beautful ride home this afternoon - temps in the 50s, sun, tailwind. I love November!!!

First commute in 22 years. Not the last.

6.5 miles, which wasn't very far for me before. Turns out it's still not very far.

My commute has lots of small rolling hills. The flat spots are the tops and bottoms of the hills. Love having lotsa gears, cause I wasn't beaten by any hill the road threw at me.

Temp was about 44° F. Wore, I think, one too many layers, as I was warm the whole ride, and too warm when I arrived.

Tooled along at whatever speed I felt like, got to work in about 30 minutes.

First day of Bike to Work Week here and I'm stuck in a cage in the pouring rain. My son made it to daycare dry and warm, but I got to work tired and stressed. No riding at all this weekend. I need to pull out the trainer tonight and put in some suffering.

Steely Dan 11-01-10 09:37 AM

over the weekend, the city apparently dug a brand new deep and wide trench across the road along my regular commute route. i didn't notice it until the last minute, but i tried to bunny hop it anyway. i made it most of the way across, but i i still caught my rear rim on the far edge of the canyon with a very loud bang and subsequent pinch flat. i had my tires up at 90psi, but that wasn't enough for that violent impact. at least the rim looks good and still spins true.

stupid city cutting trenches in roads without patching them back up. ohhhhh the wonderful glory that is the chicago streets & san department.

I was going to comment on the dark rides in too. Not to sound like I'm trying to one-up you, but here in the Great White North (53.57 degrees North), our sunrise isn't until 8:30 these days, and sunset at 6:00 pm. Next week, with DST ending, I might see the beginning of the sunrise in the morning, but my commute home will suddenly be dark.

Commute in temp was around 0C/32F. The forecast for the week is for unseasonably warm temperatures. I was pretty excited because I thought I would be able to go back to my old, favourite route through a couple of city parks. A pedestrian bridge over a freeway (my access to the park route) was supposed to re-open on the weekend after being closed since spring, but when I got there this morning, it was still barricaded. Bummer. Had to backtrack a bit and got to work a little later than usual. I got word from the city that it's supposed to open later today, but I'm not holding my breath.

doc0c 11-01-10 09:56 AM

It was about -5C this morning, but apart from my frozen toes (I need to get some good socks) the ride felt great. I think I actually set a record time because I raised my seat up a bit more and I guess I can get more torque onto the pedals.

oban_kobi 11-01-10 10:28 AM

Commute was beautiful today. I got trekking bars yesterday, wrapped them with bright blue bar tape, and went for ~30 mile ride. They still feel new today, it's almost like getting a new bike. Hills don't stand a chance :p

CptjohnC 11-01-10 10:53 AM

definitely much cooler this morning (probably high 30s or low 40s - on the archaic Fahrenheit scale). I stuck with shorts, but I layered up with a long sleeved base layer between my short sleeved technical T light wind layer. I almost stopped and pulled the wind pants out, but decided to stick it out, and by the beginning of mile 3 I was doing okay. I think I'm glad I did, though I'll be looking closely at the temp for the ride home.

Actually, by mile 7 or 8 I considered stopping to remove the wind layer, but again, I demurred. Overall I was okay, though my feet were a bit chilly. I think I need to look at warmer sock options.

Pippin 11-01-10 12:33 PM

Wet. Very, very wet morning in Seattle with solid rain expected all day. Even rain pants for me which is pretty unusual. Warm though.

gecho 11-01-10 01:08 PM

Back on the bike this morning. -3C and icy on the way in, the studded tires were great. +7C and very wet on the way home. All the snow should be gone and hopefully back to dry roads by mid-week.

Welcome back into the fold!

Nice commuting weather today; I so prefer this to temps that leave me sweating for a half hour after the ride is over. Of course, if I could lose some more weight the warmer weather likely wouldn't affect me as much as it does now. Gotta keep pedaling!

Sixty Fiver 11-01-10 03:24 PM

Warm, sunny...and slow.

Was hauling trailer loads of food last night and the legs were dead.

Sounds like the streets not too far from here. I'm looking forward to Chapin and East St in Ludlow getting paved, but it doesn't seem like it's ever going to happen. They're almost going on 2 full weeks with ripped up roads and no new asphalt. Good commute home today at 45F and partly sunny with winds from the NNW @ 12mph. My cyclocomputer is still a bit off, and I accidently adjusted it the wrong way before I left. It said that I went less distance than I actually did. When I got home, I readjusted it the right way so hopefully it will be more accurate next time.

dcb23 11-01-10 05:46 PM

wow that was chilly this morning. I was fairly bundled up plus I had offered to bring in breakfast for colleagues. So I had both baskets full of food plus my clothes in a bag over my shoulder...not doing that again. On the way back today I encountered, for the third time in my short bike commute career, national Park Police motorcycles motoring down the sidewalks around the Mall. Not cool imho...one time was very early, in the dark, and he came up from behind and scared the hell out of me.

buzzman 11-01-10 10:23 PM

had to commute to a variety of locations today. The final one was a business meeting at a restaurant about 7 miles from where we all work. I rode the 10 miles home. Did some grocery shopping then rode to the meeting. I was there 10 minutes early and the first one there. Amazing to sit there as people are circling the block in their cars looking for a place to park. At the end of the meeting, I suppose this was kind, I was asked if I wanted to throw my bike in the back of a car for the ride home. It's so funny how inconvenient a car feels to me.

commo_soulja 11-02-10 03:13 AM

I overslept this morning and didn't have my pannier packed with the days clothes. Took a while to get things ready and leisurely rode into work. It's been in the 40's in the morning and my toes were a little cold. I gotta find a new pair of toe covers for my shoes once the temp drops. My current pair look like a stole em from a homeless guy.

RedPanther 11-02-10 04:04 AM

good for me, however rider in front was hit by a car door!

fletchh 11-02-10 04:45 AM

It was cold this morning at 28 F ( -2 C). I am never ready for the cold, but by January, I will be wishing for 28 F ( -2 C). Everything stayed warm, but my face, and I am just not ready to cover it up.

dcb23 11-02-10 06:17 AM

Yikes, I was chilled this morning but it was crisp and clear. My computer said 39 just as I was leaving my apt.

vtjim 11-02-10 06:53 AM

Mid 30sF. Sun not quite up yet. My bike computer was reading 29F / -1C for a little while. Maybe I went through a cold spot. Didn't see any other cyclists but there were a few runners out. Cute regular runner girl now says hi every time we meet. :o

Allycat24 11-02-10 07:20 AM

32F, clear skies. Sun was just peaking over DC when I got to Key Bridge. I was well dressed, except for my fingers! Had some new full finger gloves (never worn) but apparently they are not rated for 32. Fortunately I had some windstopper gloves and just pulled them over the bike gloves and then I was fine. I had a nice ride in today, and then in my building, ran into another female bike computer who gave me a great tip on a little-known (and well hidden) bike rack in my building. Will check it out at lunch.

CptjohnC 11-02-10 08:24 AM

Mid 30s, sunny and clear. Definitely glad to have the wind pants on this morning, though my cycling shorts and T were pretty sweaty under the wind pants and wind and warm layers by the time I arrived. My hands did fine today, other than some brief moments of cool fingers when I started, but my head was pretty cold starting out. Not cold enough to want a real warm layer, though. Perhaps a wind cover for the helmet?

DaveZ 11-02-10 08:58 AM

Perfect! Nice and brisk. Just the thing I needed to reverse the effects of all the beer last night celebrating the Giants!

Ohohoho! ;)

I'm still deciding between bus and bike. I feel a sore throat coming on, so I feel like I should let my body focus on that, but my legs are itching to go. I think my legs are winning...it looks so nice outside...

gecho 11-02-10 09:35 AM

+6C so I wore shorts today. All the sand the city put on the roads last week is making a huge mess, my bike and panniers are splattered with dirt. Supposed to be +11C and sunny for the ride home.

EKW in DC 11-02-10 09:52 AM

Stopped to vote on the way to work. Fellow bike commut4er was unlocking and heading off just as I arrived to lock up and go in to vote.

Had my closest near miss in a while on the way in to work after voting. 8:45 AM. Sun is already up and it's bright out. The lady turns right from a side street onto the main street I was on. I was doing 18-20 mph in this stretch (it's an ever so slight downhill). She had stopped, but she didn't look to see if anything was coming. I know because I was trying to establish eye contact as I approached. Having made none I got leary of the situation. Good thing I did, because she pulled right into my path. Had she looked, she would have had a clear line of sight to me in my BRIGHT ORANGE long sleeve tee-shirt and my front blinkie going. Good thing for her I wasn't a Mack truck, or she'd be in a world of hurt right now. Don't know WHAT she was thinking. Locked up my brakes trying to slow down and came within a couple feet of her rear bumper as she started to accelerate. Too bad that she had all her windows rolled up on this chilly morning, or she would have actually hear me yell at her, "WHOA! Look before you turn next time!!!" I thought some other less pleasant things, but refrained from yelling them. She wouldn't have heard them anyway. Honestly, I don't think she ever knew I was there even after she pulled out. I tried to chase her down at the next traffic light, but it turned green and she was off before I got to roll up next to her and give her some friendly advice, or at least a friendly hand gesture or a WTF were you thinking look.

Apart from the near miss with the oblivious woman, it was a nice commute in this morning. Getting into the colder mornings. It was in the 30s. I had a pair of base layer tights under a pair of cargo shorts, and a long sleeve shirt over a short sleeve shirt. Half-finger gloves. A little cold at the start, but felt perfect once I got warmed up a mile or so into the ride. Could ride harder and not sweat at all. Lovin' it! Perfect.

HardyWeinberg 11-02-10 09:54 AM

40F, foggy.

Really happy w/ 700x35mm tires for this time of year.

I know what you mean. I had another incident this morning at a familiar spot. It's probably the 3rd or 4th time I've had somebody pull out of the convenience store parking lot without looking.

I saw the speed of the car this morning as he approached the exit and assumed he wasn't going to stop. Always assume the cagers are out to get you and act accordingly. I need to get an Airzound.

Grew up in Ludlow, just of Miller Street. Haven't been back there for years. Used to do a lot of riding from Ludlow through Palmer and Monson. It was a hick part of town, but I miss the quiet roads there when I am riding out here in metro Boston.

Funny how quickly I am acclimating to the colder temps. Yesterday I was doubling up on layer @ 28 F; today I though the 40 F temps were downright balmy. By Christmas, I be cheering warm temps in the mid 20s.
