Well, I've found the limit of my tires, 2900 km and the back is threadbare. I guess there is a downside to full fenders, I can't see the condition of the tire until I wear a hole in it. Booted the tire last night and I'm going to make an attempt to run out to MEC for replacements. It's bulging, but holding air. Woke late and got to work late which isn't helping me get out early.

Good advice. Fortunately, that's what I do, and I had stopped pedaling as I approached this driver and assumed she was going to pull out, so I was ready to jam on the brakes. I shudder to think where I'd be right now if I just kept pedaling through there at 20 mph and ran right into her car as she pulled out... YIKES! Or, like I said, where she'd be if I had been a Mack truck and not an alert cyclist. All's wall that ends well, I suppose, for now.

Nice morning 42f calm, still loving the new bike

Sometimes they really do look straight through you. I had one do that to me a while back, only she was turning left from my right. 25MPH residential streets. I'm going downhill in the middle of my lane. Over 20MPH with my flaming halogen headlight cranked up. She just pulls right out. I also anticipate this stuff so it was no problem to bleed speed. The whole time I kept turning into her so my light stayed square in her face. :D She looked pretty surprised when I was almost on top of her. Then she hit the gas to get out of my way.

4C/39F. In Edmonton in November, these temps constitute a gorgeous day. Wore shorts.

It was brightened up in the shadows, mainly where the buildings are and the saturation was upped a bit, but the sky looked almost like that in reality, it was not artificially colored, just intensified a little.

BTW, all those amazing photos on National Geographic, etc. are photoshopped too. Most people shoot RAW and then edit the heck out of their images. This one was shot with.... An iPhone :)

First bike commute since last Weds after two running days and a long weekend of fulltime childcare. Roads a bit damp this morning but blazing sun now - tomorrow's supposed to be a run day but an extended commute on the road bike is looking tempting.

buzzman 11-02-10 10:35 PM

great ride this morning. Up early to vote. Rode to the polls. A little different route in this morning due to construction on the bike path. Because of the voting and new route I kind of lost track of the time and started to think that I was running late (I don't have a clock on my bike or a wrist watch and I didn't want to pull out my cell phone.) Turns out I was a good 1/2 hour ahead of schedule as I pulled into work. Ride home tonight after a very long day was a nice ride home in the dark.

fletchh 11-03-10 04:41 AM

It was a cold ride in at 22 F ( -5). I feel that it is too early for that kind of temp, but I stayed warm.

vtjim 11-03-10 06:28 AM

27F near Lake Champlain this morning. Got to work just as the sun was starting to throw purple light on the tops of trees and buildings. Reeled in another commuter and stayed behind him all the way in.

Yesterday I realized when the LBS changed my tube the other day, they mounted my tire backward. It's not really obvious that the tread is unidirectional, but it is. There's a "rotation" arrow on the sidewall & everything. That would explain why I've been feeling a bit slow this week, and I can hear tire noise. I'm on vacation starting tomorrow. I'll fix it before I commute again.

Nice morning 42f, i think i may have dozed off for a sec. i was riding and all of a sudden i was riding through a bark shoulder?

When did they put an air conditioned dome over Columbia to make it even colder than everywhere else? I've checked the official temps in DC and Baltimore and it was never below 31. Even in Frederick at the base of the first ridge of the mountains, it only went down to 27. Even Burlington, VT only got down to 24... How was it 22 where you are? Is your thermometer proerly calibrated? ;)

In any case, it was chilly again this AM. It didn't feel as cold as yesterday. To me, today felt more "very cool" as opposed to "cold" like it felt yesterday. Either it was a tad warmer or I'm just getting used to the colder temps.

No near misses with oblivious cagers today, so all in all, an improvement over yesterday's commute.

Chalupa102 11-03-10 08:11 AM

Great commute this morning at 28F and sunny with no winds. My fd decided to stop working, so I was stuck in the middle chain ring most of the commute. I'm glad it was the front and not the rear.

NeuroDawg 11-03-10 08:27 AM

Not a cloud in the sky -- beautiful stars and a crescent moon. 48F and no breeze. Tide was in and the water surface was glass, reflecting all the lights from across the inlet. A perfect morning. One we get only about half a dozen times per year here in the Pacific Northwest.

groovestew 11-03-10 08:31 AM

Ride home last night was hella windy, in a hunker-down-in-the-drops-and-stay-in-the-middle-chainring kinda way. There's a mile-long stretch just before my residential area that I swear could be used as Boeing's wind tunnel.

Nice and calm this morning, though, and a pleasant 3C/37F. I've been riding my winter/beater bike for the past week, but given that the streets are nice and dry and temperatures are above freezing, I broke out the road bike again today.

Access to my preferred park route has finally been re-opened, but that route involves riding on about a mile or more of gravel, and since I took my road bike, I stuck to the streets.

HardyWeinberg 11-03-10 09:06 AM

40F, clear, dry (crazy!)

jdgesus 11-03-10 11:47 AM

lovely today!

gecho 11-03-10 12:55 PM

0C for the ride in and 9C and windy for the ride home. The roads are pretty much dry so I took my studded tires off last night and put on a pair of cyclocross tires. That was the first time I ever mounted a foldable tire with an aramid bead, and was initially confounded by the two lasagnia noodles I was presented with. They went on without too much hassle, but I wouldn't want to have to repair a flat out on the road with them.

jdgesus 11-03-10 02:02 PM

oh, forgot to add, saw another bike accident (bike on bike action)
one guy had gash and blood on the left side of his face :(

scoatw 11-03-10 03:19 PM

This morning the temp was 33f. I had on a Mont Bell Versalite jacket with the Sporthill Symmetry, workpants with leg warmers, sandals/socks with shoe covers, and the visorgogs. Oh yeah, cotton gloves that just about reached their threshold. The aftn was about 58f. I started out all bundled up with the versalite, long sleeve jersey, shorts and tights. I took off the jacket and tights and everything was comfortable. I saw a few other people bundled up with jackets and pants. But I have the advantage of being able to carry cargo. The weather was sunny and felt good.

wunderkind 11-03-10 03:38 PM

It's getting cold. Especially the first coupla minutes. And dark too.
Witnessed sun rise. Gorgeous.

Chalupa102 11-03-10 04:19 PM

Did not ride home this afternoon. My friend asked me if I could drive because she wasn't feeling well and felt like she was going to pass out. We loaded my trike in her Ford Explorer, and I drove that while she slept in the passenger seat.

nelson249 11-03-10 08:48 PM

Cold ride today on my long commute. The run in was fine but wasn't much fun on the way home. It is getting dark so much sooner plus it decided to rain as I was shaping course for home. All of this was fine but I think I need to look into different lighting arrangements as my neck muscles were starting to hurt keeping the helmet light trained. With the rain and the completely dark trail my glasses were getting fogged up and I just about wiped out a hiker wandering about wearing dark clothes. It was good thing I dialed back the revs. I think I might have to shorten the commute by driving the car closer to work.

daijoubu2k8 11-03-10 10:28 PM

Tuesday afternoon was the worst bike ride I've ever had! Apparently Conti Ultra Sports are only good for 2900km on the rear. That little tiny hole I had on Monday night caused a blowout on the way to MEC and was the size of a dime before I got home. I couldn't even get 30 km on the tire. Good thing I'd picked up a spare at MEC. To make the trip worse, my freewheel locked up and wrapped the rear derailleur around the axle! :( Nothing like major repairs at the road side. I converted my bike to a single speed and swapped out the tires just to get home. Stopped at the Bike to Work Week commuter station by Metropolis for some coffee and a banana. Thank goodness for them, the brightest spot in the ride! Made it to Bonsor in time to join my son for his last preschool soccer class. I don't know why people like riding single speed. Either you're grinding up a hill in a gear that's much too high, or you're pedalling like mad going nowhere on the flats. What a horrible thing to do to a good bike!

No commutes for today. Played hookie today and ran around town looking for a new RD. Shoulda gone to New West Cycles first. Grabbed a good used Deore LX rear derailleur and a 7 speed Shimano freewheel plus shifter cable for $20. Everything is back on the bike and I'm looking forward to riding with the extra gears and a long cage derailleur. I know, why would you put Deore parts on a road bike... I works and it was cheap! I could've tried my hands with some old Simplex derailleurs!

bored117 11-03-10 10:56 PM

Was strange ride today. Coming back to home, there was strong headwind for most of 8 miles. I was struggling. Combined to that unusually hot weather today (94F or so...summer is back!) That warm dry headwind.... was just not right. When I finally got to 5-6% incline for 3.5 mile section, I was just glad to see that hill (no wind there)... Great work out but I am little worn out today.

fletchh 11-04-10 04:34 AM

Warmer ride in today, but steady rain at 40 F ( 4 C). Yesterday on the way home, the front retainer clip on my clipless pedal snapped off; it looks like an easy fix, if the bike store has the parts.

Yep, it is a good thermometer on my deck. I usually check it around 5am, as I head out at 5:10. The air temp was colder than the day before.

dcb23 11-04-10 05:51 AM

51 when I rolled out into the rain. I kinda like the rainy commutes but what I don't like is how soaked my feet get. Running shoes and hiking shoes both failed miserably at keeping my feet dry. My waterproof ankle high boots were dry but those are just way too big to be biking in. What do you all wear to keep your feet dry??? Any bike commuter online stores to recommend? I will also check my bike shop but they do not have too much of a clothing stock.
