Another unseasonably warm day in NC, like just about the entire year. Temps have been in the 70s during my morning commute all week, nearly 30 degrees above normal for the date. That's been nice but it's also been extremely humid with persistent headwinds, so it's mostly a wash. It's supposed to be much cooler and more seasonable tomorrow, which I prefer. Somehow I've managed to bike commute nearly every day without getting caught in the rain despite a lot of storms.

jdgesus 10-28-10 12:29 PM

i was stuck behind a garbage truck for a few miles this morning....

Ran to work this morning. Fairly warm with drizzle and a breeze. I was watching the bike commuters and was struck by how overdressed they all looked in jackets and rainpants. If I wear that getup above about 4c, I turn into a squelchy swamp-monster in about five minutes.

This morning, there's lightning going nuts outside, thundering constantly. Hate to wuss out, but I'm not sure I want to ride through a full-on thunderstorm just yet.

I got caught in the rain yesterday on the way home, it wasn't too bad (wasn't cold, though, that helped)

Great. It's good to be part of this community of commuters. Haven't rode in a thunderstorm, we get them here (Edmonton, Alberta CANADA) mostly in August. I used to live in Vancouver, BC - also known as "rain"couver and I'm beginning to think I may prefer riding in freezing temps rather than in pouring rain. I would need wipers for my specs :D

Beautiful day in Annapolis, stopped on the bridge crossing the Severn River to snap a pic of the Naval Academy and many boats out...

Nice day and nicer pic! :thumb:

Great commute this morning, after a week of warm, wet and muggy weather. Yesterday morning I was boasting about successfully dodging showers all week, and of course the weather gods paid me back with a storm right about the time I normally leave work. So I hung around the office for an extra hour waiting for the rain to clear, as it was really pouring. The rain quit by the time I left, so I had yet another commute on wet roads this week. Overnight the weather finally cleared, and it was cool, clear and dry this morning with even a bit of a tailwind. To top it all off, I passed 3,000 miles commuting for the year this week.

ZmanKC 10-29-10 05:52 AM

34° this morning but for the first time all week there was no wind. I was dressed properly so I was quite comfortable.

Should be close to 70° for the ride home this afternoon. Gotta love our midwestern weather.

vtjim 10-29-10 06:04 AM

46F and rain. Tailwind. Not too bad. I heard the neighborhood's wild turkeys clucking in the woods when I left.

Friday! :thumb:

AdamDZ 10-29-10 06:48 AM

Cooler, but dry and rather nice morning. Another shot of the same spot where I get off of the Williamsburg Bridge on the Manhattan side. It was a bit earlier and darker so, obviously, this shot is Photoshopped a little :)

Coldest day of the season so far. 35 degrees.

dcb23 10-29-10 07:22 AM

Wow a bit chilly this morning compared to yesterday! And once again I get the headwind. This morning I was surprised to see about 150 Army cadets/recruits (not sure) doing calesthenics and marching on the East plaza of the Capitol buiding around 6:45ish--shorts and tshirts in the cold!

genel 10-29-10 07:26 AM

Weather report said 33f, I don't believe it. felt much colder. Fingers just thawed enouigh to type this.

FunkyStickman 10-29-10 07:29 AM

Nice shots, Adam! That is beautiful!

Finally had a cold front come through after all the rain yesterday, temps went from 75F down to 45F in the morning. Good thing I just bought some long-sleeve shirts and a wool beanie to put under the helmet! My hands and knees were a bit chilled when I got in to work, might need to break out the leg warmers and an extra pair of gloves.

I love the cold weather!!

Chalupa102 10-29-10 08:02 AM

Good commute in at 44F and partly cloundy with no wind. Had to break out the gloves again now that the cooler weather is back. My good cyclocomputer is trashed, so I'm using the old one. It was a little off so I need to recalibrate it.

EKW in DC 10-29-10 08:02 AM

A pain in the arse of a headwind (20 mph w/ gusts to 30+), but finally cool and crisp again (temp in the high 40s F). Enjoyed the ride.

Looking forward to the ride home w/ that same wind at my back! The spoils of this morning's efforts, I suppose... :)

Could have been Army, but Marines seem just as/more likely, as this weekend is the MCM, right? But definitely not odd to have Army folks ding PT in shorts and Ts even when its cold. Uniform of the day doesn't always make sense. I saw lots of Marine Corps flags being set out along my route.

Anyway, as to my ride this morning: My thermometer said 51 when I got on the bike, and I very much enjoyed the cooler temps. I didn't notice the wind so much as others have mentioned (I thought the ride home last night was worse) but I did choose to put a light wind layer over my long sleeve T, and wore full finger gloves. I stuck to shorts, though. So many folks wearing full length tights, neck gaiters, etc...

HardyWeinberg 10-29-10 11:07 AM

45F, sunny, clammy

began the day w/ 6 yr old on trail-a-bike, 2 x 30# panniers, and a 20# backpack, but that part was short. Dumped kid and cargo at school, then rode fixie out to work, no time to cool down, off to meetings

daijoubu2k8 10-29-10 11:57 AM

Desperately wanted a bike ride today. Dropped my son off at daycare, drove home and hooked up the TAB so I can bring him home by bike. I rode to work on the short route and really enjoyed it! Decided not to spend the day as Sweaty Bike Commuter Guy. Not quite an award winning Halloween costume.

Monster Pete 10-29-10 01:37 PM

Ended up in the middle of a spontaneous convoy of bikes on the way home today. A few of us ended up riding behind each other leaving campus, then at the junction with the main road two more cyclists were following each other, so we all fell in step behind them, drafting each other, except for a guy on a racing bike who felt the need to pass us all with great effort.

Chalupa102 10-29-10 02:29 PM

Great commute at 51F and mostly cloudy with winds from the WNW @ 15mph. Quite a bit of traffic on the roads this afternoon. I need to memorize which type of vehicles my friends drive. I had about 3 different vehicles give me friendly beeps and then wave at me on the way home. I know I've seen the vehicles before, but I'm not sure who the drivers were.

jdgesus 10-29-10 04:45 PM

amazing weather today! hovering around 60F right now.

had to ride up to crown hill and back (about 15m round trip)

stopped at freemont boat bridge as the bridge was up

Just about close to perfect ! I love this weather, cool at 52 and bright sunshine. I actually find myself slowing down just to prolong the road travel.

Tuesday's commute in the wind and snow did a number on me. I came down with the flu or something with a high fever and was out of commission the remainder of the week. I made the mistake of taking the bus to class the next day and had to wear two jackets indoors to barely feel warm. The roads here are so uneven and rutted from the snow, I wouldn't have even tried biking even if I had the energy.

Today I tried to take my car to a doctor appointment but all the tires were surrounded by ice and it couldn't get out of the holes. It's warming up next week so the slick tires might be going back on.

Ira B 10-30-10 10:28 AM

Last night it was about 40 degrees f, clear with patches of fog, almost no breeze. Lots of stars and I followed the planet Venus almost all the way home.
Pushed extra hard for a nice workout, slept like a baby and woke up feeling like a million bucks. :)

:D :thumb: I saw the picture before I read the text. A few beers and some Sake, and I was like, "OMG THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING PICTURE EV_ oh it's Photoshopped." :) Still, very cool.

Good ride in on the first day of the Celtic new year, but the first morning this season below freezing at 30 F ( -1 C). Only my hands were a bit cold, so tomorrow, I will get another pair gloves out. On down hills the plastic frames of my glasses stung, but I just didn't feel like pulling my face mask up. It is also the first morning for leggins, and a sad morning at that.

cmolway 11-01-10 05:38 AM

First 30 F ride in for me as well. Wore the leg warmers over my tights and an extra base-layer on top. The only thing complaining were my finger tips. Can't wait for Daylight Savings so I can commute in with a little daylight again (at least for a little while).

vtjim 11-01-10 06:06 AM

Overcast, 36F / 2C, with a tailwind. I found if I stayed at 15-16MPH, I had zero wind noise, and just the whir the tires, so I maintained that speed. Sure is getting dark in the morning now. By this coming Friday, our sunrise will be 7:34AM. I leave around 7. Good thing I'll be on vacation later this week. :thumb:

Chalupa102 11-01-10 07:11 AM

Chilly today and I was feeling slow for some reason. 32F and sunny with winds from the NW @ 10mph. I was warm on the commute, but my feet froze. I need to get better socks if I'm gonna stay clipless, because all I have with SPD are Keen commuter sandals.
