good ride today, no headwind and not too hot.

Dear Mr. SUV,

When rolling a stop sign, at least look both ways first.

Sincerely,
Guy on Bright Orange Bike

Fenders are amazing. On a never really raining morning, they're the difference between damp socks that will dry by the end of the work day, and wet socks that wouldn't. And no roadgrime on me so I don't feel like I need a shower.

I took one right through the spokes last fall. It was NOT pretty. Hitting the deer broadside in February hurt more tho. Three weeks later Matt Lauer got his and made TV. I just had to suffer in obscurity :)

Holy crap!!! That's what I'm afraid of... did you crash?

No.... But I decapitated the squirrel. Based on the amount of blood I LOOKED like I had crashed.. The bike and my legs were a mess!

I flung him around in the spokes and when he hit the fork he was a goner. I think had I hit his body mass I would have endoed, but I was moving at a good clip and it was just like he had been hit with a guillotine. I knew I hit something, but had to turn around to even see what.

I had a nice ride in. Looking out to the foggy distance, I saw the shores of Martha's Vineyard. I thought to myself, "Obama's in a fog today..." I think I rode over an area of broken glass on the way home tonight. My tire-lined Gatorskins seem fine, though. For now, at least... :O

JoshTheSkier 08-25-09 10:29 PM

Good ride in and out today.

The ride home is always nicer, no traffic at 11:30pm, so I can just fly down the middle of the lane, I'm not relegated to the glass/rock/sand/assorted car part strewn shoulder.

It's supposed to cool down a little bit here in the People's Republic over the next week or two, I'm looking forward to that. I'm getting a little sick of walking into work drenched in sweat.

fletchh 08-26-09 04:27 AM

It was a good ride in, 64 F ( 17 C). It's that wonderful time of year, when the morning temps are pretty constant for summer. In January they are constant too, but not in a good way.

CCrew 08-26-09 05:31 AM

Nice ride. About 65 degrees. Wed/Thursday seems to bring out the once in a blue moon roadies, so I crushed a couple of their souls :) There's a certain satisfaction to dropping a guy on a high zoot carbon bike when it's truly obvious that he's trying not to let you. That said, my quads are killing me in a good way...

Big Ron 08-26-09 05:32 AM

Finally back on the bike. Had a good, sweaty ride in. Sadly, my dual beam headlight is now a single beam headlight...Think I need to check the contacts in the switch. The light is 10 years old now, so not a big surprise if the contacts are a little dirty.

ItsJustMe 08-26-09 05:36 AM

First full dark ride with the new headlight in the rain this morning. Light rain, 65*F. Very nice ride. The headlight is the MagicShine P7 from GeoMan. I LIKE it. It's as bright as my HID was but weighs about 1/10 as much, cost 1/3 as much.

Very nice. Came upon another commuter with a big tote slung messenger bag-style across his back. Looked heavy to me. Cloudy, with temps in the low 60s. Little bit of a headwind but not bad.

Thursday night's forecast calls for lows in the 30s. (F) :wtf:

Yesterday I took the long way home and snapped a picture of some cows going for a swim...

Commute #17. You know a newbie when he still counts his commutes. :)

Great ride. Stopped to take a couple pictures of my route. Hope the picture of the pig sty turns out. I'll share 'em when I have time to hook up the camera to the computer.

Oh, and somebody parked a train in my road.

jpdesjar 08-26-09 07:33 AM

Beautiful ride this morning, the air was cooler and drier.
My legs felt great too, I would like to thank a good night's rest.

Heavy! I drove yesterday and picked up some stuff for work including 4L of Vinegar and a toaster oven (can you guess what i do? Nope you're wrong). I picked that stuff up on my way home from work yesterday and since I drove yesterday, there was no way in heck I was driving again today. The vinegar stowed in a pannier easily enough. But, even after removing the oven from the box, I couldn't cram it into a pannier. So back into the box and and bust out the bungee cords. I bungeed it to the rear rack. It was surprisingly secure and steady. I had no worries it would fall off during the ride. I also tucked a load flag on the far corner.
I started to take it easy and took the 'back' roads to work. But even still I ended up sprinting to make lights (and slamming on the breaks when I missed one).

neilfein 08-26-09 07:53 AM

This week has been fun - good weather, and I'm riding to a carpool with my touring bike (as opossed to a train/folding bike commute). I also have a new route, following the East Coast Greenway for most of the way. (The old way went over a lot of overpasses, and had more traffic.)

canyoneagle 08-26-09 08:47 AM

On yesterday's ride home I passed by a young female roadie who appeared to be changinf a flat. I asked if she needed any help, and she said 'yes'. Her spare tube had a huge gash in it so the tire would not hold air. I repaired the pinhole in her other tube and got her back on the road. We were about a mile from my house so I topped off her air with my floor pump and she was on her way. Nice gal. She told me she had trained about 26 hours last week. :twitchy:

This morning, I left the house about 40 minutes later than normal. Bad move. Got caught up in the 'back to school' traffic in numerous locations along my route, and the heavier car commuter traffic made for longer light cycles. Yuck.
I got pinched to the curb by an 18-wheeler dump truck and had to bail - fortunately it was grass and I was slowing for a turn anyway. Yikes. It was unnerving to have those big wheels rolling within inches of me.

To top it off, I broke a spoke (#2 this month). Looks like I'll be pulling the wheel this weekend and putting some time into re-tensioning it.

Still, I feel great, and look forward to my ride home.

2 sunny days which naturally equates to 2 days in the cage

Since this is often the weather report thread, I thought I'd provide a forecast instead.

Yes, summer is definitely not over!

Ed Holland 08-26-09 12:10 PM

Nice ride this morning, despite being a bit pushed for time. Was passed by a friend in his Mini Cooper, but caught up with him a mile or so later at the traffic lights for a chat.

DieselAmy 08-26-09 12:18 PM

Got hit on my way home yesterday! Luckily I'm fine, but seatstay and rear rack are bent, plus other parts are messed up some. It was such a lovely day up to that point.

I drove today.

wunderkind 08-26-09 12:30 PM

Today was good. Everything was fine. It's getting cold in the mornings though.

Glad you're ok.
Will the damages be compensated?

I don't know. Cop who took the report said it'd be several days until it was ready and he didn't know the statute for the situation (I was coming off an MUP where a road intersection also occurs). The driver had insurance and didn't leave, probably thanks to the witness who called 911 and kept him accountable/there. I'm not sure if I should just call the driver's insurance company or what. I did not get a ticket and I don't think the driver did, but I don't know.

There's a thread about the crash in A&S http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=578406

LostPony 08-26-09 04:00 PM

I finally cracked 30mph for the first time since I've been riding again. There's one long stretch on my route where I can try to open it up, and I wasn't met by the normal headwind. It's not terribly exciting, but the loaded bike weighs over 36 lbs and it's a slightly uphill run, so I'm feeling kind of good.

meeting canceled, sprung for tomorrow anyway.

CCrew 08-26-09 05:06 PM

OMG, what a death ride on the way home. For some reason *zero* legs. Makes it tough when the ride is 25 miles. Musta been that Rays Hellburger with jalapenos and the fries for lunch. At least Obama wasn't there clogging the line up :) :P

caloso 08-26-09 05:14 PM

Mrs. Caloso and the Wonder Twins were heading up the hill to Nana and Papa's place in Tahoe City today so I skipped my morning training ride to help load the bikes (of course) into/onto the van. But I did bring my road bike and jersey/bibs for a long ride home tonight since I'll be batching it.

(I imagine most guys would be hitting the bars or driving range -- I'm just looking forward to a long ride out in the country. It's a sickness, I tell you.)

Matt1972 08-26-09 07:36 PM

I drove in today, but I did stop at Corner Cycle to buy a bottle of Boeshield T9 lube, and also I bought a bottle of Simple Green at work- my chain's getting black.
