How was the commute today? Continued.

Flew to work today. I left the with a slow ride in mind ...and apparently changed my mind along the way; I logged my best time yet. Cool, Rainy, wind at my back (going). Brutal headwind coming home (30 knots). I stayed in town (between the buildings) as much as possible and avoided areas that allowed a lot of wind generation. As usual no other commuters on my route.
I think that I've got the bike setup like I want it. After a few new items I'm going to have to get some hybrid tires ( I may have said the before...)
Can anyone suggest some good, durable MTB shorts for the coming hot weather?

nice commute this morning. overcast sky. cool at 60 deg. had to remove the wind pants as I had thought it was going to be colder like yesterday. Oh and I broke a spoke on my ride home yesterday.
had to drop by LBS to fix. lucky they are on the way home. probably be in low 70's this afternoon.

glorious morning here in southeast michigan- sunny and 55 degrees, perfect weather. i decided to take it slow and not hammer up hills as my left knee started bothering me yesterday for some reason, i stopped this morning to raise my seat an inch and it seemed to help. i also went a different route thru some subdivisions to avoid traffic. the commute home was awful last night- i had absolutely no legs and felt out of gas the entire way home.

I think a cop in a 3 wheeled scooter was drafting me today while I dodged traffic and split lanes.

Saw a guy get right-hooked today. I was just in front of my house getting on my bike when a cyclist rode by on the street probably going about 15 mph. I remember I was wondering what he was wearing as I was wondering if I was dressed OK for the weather in my shorts, sandals, and short sleeve shirt when it seemed about 55. (He had on knickers and a t shirt). Half a block down at the intersection a car traveling on the same street was making it's right turn well in front of the cyclist, so the cyclist who was going straight probably didn't have to slow down for that one, but then the next car follows that car right in front of the cyclist. I thought the cyclist was being hit. The cyclist did a pretty impressive turn right stop, so he went down leaning away from, but parallel to, the car. Turned out the the back bike tire just bumped a tire on the car as the car went by and the bike was basically on its side. I dropped my bike and went over there. The downed cyclist got up pretty quickly and did the arm-raised "what the deal?" motion while glaring at the car which had stopped 50 feet from the incident. As the driver and passenger got out of the car, the cyclist yelled, "Did you see me?" a couple of times. The couple in the car were very old. They were basically silent and kept their distance a bit at first. Perhaps the man who was the driver muttered something I didn't hear clearly. The cyclist yelled, "Well you just ran me over." I and another passerby verified the cyclist was OK. The cyclist started fiddling with his bike which didn't look majorly bent or anything at first glance. The seat just needed adjustment, and the chain was off. The old couple was basically speechless. The woman who was the passenger did ask, "Are you OK?" The cyclist tersely responded yeah he was OK, but he wasn't sure about the bike. I went back and got my bike and rode over to the cyclist who was checking out his bike and talking to the motorists. I asked if he needed any tools or anything. He said he didn't, but was worried about the wheel (which looked OK visually). It looked like a fairly nice and new road bike, but I admit I don't know much about such bikes. It was clearly very light. The cyclist asked the motorists to stick around as he checked things out, and they stood silently by waiting, obviously feeling quite bad and helpless. I gave the cyclist my phone number just in case there was some report witness needed at some point, and left to start my commute to work.

Great commute on the Mt Vernon Trail. My wife rode with me today, she's been wanting to start up but had a few issues to iron out, like how to get to a good starting place. Since BTW Day she's more determined to get started, at least a day or two a week she says she'll get up earlier and go in with me.

Back in the 50s and 60s traffic engineers thought that cyclists (and pedestrians) wouldn't be on the roads anymore, and a lot of the driver's education materials reflected this. Fast-forward 40 years and what these people know, or think they know, about interacting with cyclists on the road is totally wrong.
Unfortunately many states' "tests" for re-licensing don't really test for anything except your vision and ability to identify traffic signs by shape (not to mention the states like Arizona, where a license is good for 40 or more years), so these drivers never have their assumptions--or their "knowledge"--updated.
Heck, I got my license only about 25 years ago in NY, and I still remember the driver's ed manual having information on which type of vehicle (including, yes, a person on horseback!) had the right-of-way at a 4-way stop.
Next time you come to a 4-way stop and you can't get the driver to go even though he was there first, remember that when he learned to drive the rule might have been, cyclists have the right-of-way.

red light runner
The driver apparently realized what she had done as she finally slowed down after going through the intersection. I kept wondering - How does someone not see a 75' long yellow school bus? Jeez, if someone can't be bothered to notice a red light or a school bus, how can we expect them to see a cyclist?

Pretty nice week of riding for me (bailing tomorrow for a four-day weekend
). Morning temps in the 40sF so knicks in the AM, shorts on the way home. Was dragging a bit this morning again. For the last month or so, I've been taking a slightly longer route in and purposely "riding up grades" (to quote some old European bike racer
) on the way home because I felt like I'd been slacking a good bit during the winter. I am re-learning (for the umptieth time, I guess) that it's easier to maintain than it is to regain...

Front wheel into a wind-born garbage can on the way home yesterday - first time that happened. The empty can pounced onto the road. I stopped just in time, with the front wheel just sticking into the opening of the plastic garbage can. Appointment after work - gotta drive today.

55 degrees, nice for the morning! expecting 80s for the ride home. it was nice to strip down to just bike shorts - t-shirt base and day-glo vest. got a yellow livestrong t for the ride home, but I'm thinking I liked ALOT! the biking t-shirt I saw at Harris this week. It's day-glo green, with black accents and rear pockets. don't need the pockets but the color combo plus long rear are so nice. some gear is worth the money if you divide # of uses by cost ...
long stem and new bar tape made my ride in on my old Varsity even more comfortable - hoping my bicycling elitist boss won't make derogatory comments about my "fit"
also, I so like my Armnadillos I'm going to get another pair for my other steel commuter

Incredible commute to work this morning. It's been chilly (40s) every morning this week, but today it was about 60 F when I left. The wind was still out of the north, however, so I had a tailwind most of the way. I rode the single-speed, which is always faster for me, and really booked it. Finished with one of my fastest commutes ever, despite my continuing red-light curse. I outwitted one of the red lights by making a right turn, which is legal in NC, and going a slightly different route. Riding the SS sure is fun, but it's harder to carry gear, so I end up riding it on warmer days when I won't have a lot of clothes (eg, vest, arm and leg warmers, etc.) to carry home in the afternoon.

65 deg and cloudy. got a late start this am. have increased my commute to 20+ mile/day 5 days and it's taking a toll on me. whew was I tired last night. will keep on trucking though as I have no recourse. (sold the car last year when commute was short at 6 miles/day. that no pain/no gain better start paying dividends sooner than later....

Ride in was beautiful today. A calm, quiet, sunny 55 F morning. Very little traffic. The hills felt shorter and not quite as steep

+2C on the way in... that's trending up
. There was an oh so light right starting midway through my commute. I beat it for the most part and was only slightly dampened (my clothing, not my spirits).
