I actually think there is an apples and oranges thing here.
The 140R is not just a bright tail light, it's distinctive flash pattern is at least as notable. So, a functional equivalent of a Dinotte would require 2 red LEDs (or dual element LEDs) as well as a controller(s) specifically programmed to run them independently.

Yes, it would require a custom controller, but that would only add a few bucks to the cost of the thing.

My experience with Dinotte lights:
At first I wasn't a big Dinotte fan but after a few changes to my set up I will not leave home with out my Dinotte light. I use the helmet mount that came with my Stella lights (that I have on the bar) to mount my 200 Dinotte (I like it better). Photos are of my helmet as I ride during the day time and with the light mounted for night riding. Dinottes customer service is excellent. I had issues with my first light and they took care of it very well. I will upgrade to more Dinotte power and additional Dinotte lights as time and funds permit.

Any decent lighting set up is worth the money.

Selling a bright headlight involves much less risk than gambling on a $70 taillight. At this point they seem interesting only in the low hanging fruit.

I have two light engines, one older (100L?) and one of the 200L models and I hate the battery holders on these things. The 9V connector is problematic at best since it tends to uncouple at the worst times, like on a bumpy section of trail. I have broken a number of the battery holders - luckily they are cheap to replace. It looks like the newer 400L units are more robust but in the 200L range I have switched over to using a P7 flashlight setup - 900L for under $50.00.

That was my decision too. I'm a really cheap bastard, but I decided at some point that I couldn't justify not buying the 140L.
