DC commuter question (E street NW)

Hey DC commuters,

I've been thinking of using E street NW to avoid the national mall a bit and was wondering how it is as far as commuting goes? I currenly commute from Alexandria, over the 14th street bridge, then through the water front (water street SW) out to eastern market and up to Union Station.

I was thinking of just using the path along the jefferson and washington monument to hit E street NW and take it all the way to Union Station.
