NYC commuter question - Brooklyn to the Bronx...help?

I currently commute from the Park Slope area of Brooklyn to around midtown east...I have been doing that for about a month and am pretty comfortable with that commute...while yesterday I was able to complete my longest commute yet (Park Slope to 95th and Columbus Ave), I would like to eventually be able to commute to Riverdale once a week, where I work in the afternoons. It's about 19 miles one way (according to HopStop.com - do you KNOW that they now give BIKE DIRECTIONS? +1 for HopStop.) and I am intimidated by that crazy number, so right now I am biking to Grand Central, then taking the Metro North, then biking home from GC.

Do any of my NY peeps have any experience commuting up in the Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil area of the Bronx? I'm PRETTY sure I can take the West Side Highway up to the heavens, but it gets dicey up there and I cant visualize what to do up there...any suggestions? FYI, I dont think I have EVER seen a biker up in that area...ever!
