+1 on the Shimano PDM324. Easy to clip in and out of - platform side has a nice ridged surface the soles of your shoes can bite into, and easy to flip from platform to cliped side. The one possible drawback is if you have a really wide foot, (like E or EE), they may be a little narrow. If you wear a medium width shoe; no problem. I also wear the Shimano mountain bike shoes with an SPD clip on my commute. No ratchets, velcro straps, or gold mylar embellishments - they just look like a pair of black walking shoes with laces - quick, easy, OK!!

Another question worth asking (given that money is tight) is whether or not the benefits of having clipless pedals is going to be worth it for you.
I have and like them, but I don't think there's any significant difference as far as my commute time goes. In fact if I only used my bike for commuting I'm not sure I'd bother with them. I go back to platforms in the winter. Unfortunately, it's kind of hard to know whether or not you'll like clipless without using them for awhile.

Save yourself the money and the hassle, stick with platforms and wear whatever shoes you want.
