Trying to find a helmet. OMG.

After reading horror stories on here, I've decided I need a helmet for my commute. SO far I haven't liked the looks of anything I've tried on. I know it should be more about functionality than looks, but the rock-n-roll queer in me can't let it go. I just can't bring myself to wear some lime green and orange helmet with glitter lightening bolts and 30 vents in it. I know they make them plainer, but I was exagerating for comic effect. Are there any helmets similar to a motorcycle half-helmet on the market? I know it won't be as much ventalation as a 'real' bike helmet, but I rarely ride for more than 30 minutes. If I start doing centuries maybe I'll change my mind.

Just looking around and I dont see much variety as far as styles. Maybe I'm not looking at the right places?

Cep't maybe this old-school BMX helmet: https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=4210

Uhg.

Hey nolageek, The "Bell Metro" is a more subtle styled helmet. Below is a link to a recent thread regarding this helmet. https://www.bikeforums.net/commuting/48661-bell-metro-helmet.html

Most online retailers will have it.

Good luck!

https://www.danscomp.com has several bmx-style helmets that are more conservative
looking but still have vents.

danscomp.com also has some cool shoes that are SPD compatible. I like the Vans Exacerbate 2s. Will these work with eggbeaters? I will have to look though those helmets when I have more time. I really like the metro, but it is a little pricey.

If they had a metro with a little spike on top, I'd totally buy it. lol

Some one makes a skateboard type helmet that is a matt black rather than shiny. I think the venting is limited. I had a coworker that had it. Dont know who makes it though.

I think i'm going to start to look for a helmet. Just picked up my new bike (with new brakes that work) I havn't really had brakes that worked for about 10 years and i have a feeling that i will stop suddenly to avoid a cab driving into me, or just stopping to get off the bike for that matter.

here is a link to a store that sells helmets like i was thinking of. ProTec's website is a bit flashier but harder to find what your looking for.

Why don't you just get a motorcycle skull cap? They make some lightweight ones for about 40$ out of most major motorcycle catalogs.
